Message
The Nippon Shokubai Group has targeted the following goal in the run-up to fiscal 2025: Becoming “An
innovative chemical company that provides new value for people’s lives” and has since been promoting our
long-term business plan for the period between fiscal 2014 and 2020 called “Reborn Nippon Shokubai 2020”.
We renamed the latter-half medium-term business plan as “Reborn Nippon Shokubai 2020 NEXT” and is set for
roll-out over four years: starting from fiscal 2017, expressing our aspiration to accomplish our true regeneration
toward transformation and leap for the next generation, while leveraging the basic principle above.
Under the company credo: “Safety takes priority over production”, we will continue to advocate a policy which
cites safety and stable operation as our key management base and aim to become “A company gaining further
public trust as a responsible chemical company”. While further reinforcing our existing business fields, we will
also focus on sustained growth by challenging new fields where we can leverage our strength with a sense of
urgency as well as performance chemicals, green energy materials, health and medical fields.
Despite finding ourselves within the so-called era of uncertainty or one in which we are never sure what may
happen, our Group will be strongly implementing our Group mission: “ – Providing
affluence and comfort to people and society, with our unique technology” by precisely grasping social needs and
creating new products and services to provide in a timely manner.
We would appreciate your continued understanding and cooperation.
We are deeply dedicated to humanity and the innate human values of sincerity and honesty. We respect the unique traits and worldview of each individual, embracing diversity and
working to promote mutual understanding and trust. We recognize that it is the human spirit and point of view that shapes our understanding of management and our actions. A deep respect for humanity is the foundation for all of our corporate activities.
We work to create sustainable societies. We believe it is our corporate social responsibility to develop positive relationships with all of our stakeholders, as well as with the global environment.
We deliver new value that benefits people and society and are dedicated to working as a unified team to develop technology that will open the door to the future.
By working to expand our business worldwide, we aim to realize our mission of “providing affluence and comfort to people and society,” around the world.

Nippon Shokubai’s basic chemical products have been developed based on its unique oxidation technology.
Ethylene oxide, which is utilized in a wide range of applications from detergents to building materials, was the first material in
Japan to mark an industrialized success via 100% homegrown technology. Acrylic acid, which is used as a raw material in
superabsorbent polymers, paints as well as adhesives and tackifiers, was also developed by establishing a method of
propylene direct oxidation* – another world first – and a technology that has been widely adopted among leading overseas
acrylic acid manufacturers.
Product lines said to be the basis of Nippon Shokubai
have prompted a global response to people worldwide.

For instance, an automobile muffler has a catalyst that purifies exhaust gas. This neutralizes harmful substances in the latter while the catalyst itself remains unchanged, meaning it can be continually used for an extended per iod. Cata lyst technology represents clean technology, which fulfills positive functions such as environmental purification while the catalyst itself is unlikely to become waste.
Research-related divisions
What is a
‘catalyst’?
In the field of research and development, we have accomplished our own development, which means the Company itself
should keep progressing based on catalytic technology as our core, without depending on the introduction of foreign
technology. Ever since the Company successfully achieved the first commercial production of phthalic anhydride in Japan in
1941, the scope of our catalytic technology has broadened from basic chemicals to performance chemicals and even been
applied to the environmental purification field. By developing our technologies to a wide range of fields, new values emerge,
which help the Company continue to boost people’s affluent lives and society.
From the origin - catalyst (Shokubai*) - to the present;
And to the future – our technologies continue to advance.
A substance which never changes itself but affects the chemical reactions of other substances
*Shokubai is Japanese for "catalyst".

The Himeji Plant, one of Nippon Shokubai’s main facilities and situated on a large site mea-suring 900,000 square meters, produces a wide range of products including core products such as acrylic acid and superabsorbent polymers, performance chemicals and environmen-tal products. In addition, the site also accommodates laboratory facilities, focusing on research into E&I materials. They play an important role in researching subjects, which requires significant cooperation with the production division.
The Kawasaki Plant went into operation in 1959 when Nippon Shokubai began to produce ethylene oxide with our own technology, the first time this had been attempted in Japan. It houses Japan’s largest ethylene oxide produc-tion system and produces ethylene oxide and ethylene oxide derivatives. The polymers for concrete admixtures produced here, globally renowned for their high functional-ity and reliability, have become some of Nippon Shokubai’s most successful products.

Global Network
Nippon Shokubai’s technology and products are respected by global industry and we have been striving to export
our products and license our technology to customers. Furthermore, since the market demands and response expected by
suppliers are both more challenging, this has prompted us to establish full-scale offshore production systems.
Nippon Shokubai presently has local production subsidiaries in the United States, Indonesia, Singapore,
Belgium and China to build our world-wide production and supply network. In addition,
we are also promoting a united management system with taking overseas business into
a strategy of each business division of headquarters.
