President and Representative Director Mitsubishi Research Institute, Inc.
The Mitsubishi Research Institute (MRI) Group is working toward the co-creation of a brighter future by finding solutions to meet the needs of its clients and society. All activities of the Mitsubishi Research Institute are guided
by our founding philosophy, which emphasizes an indepen-
dent, interdisciplinary, and future-oriented approach. This
same philosophy is reflected in activities of the Mitsubishi
Research Institute Group as a leading integrated organiza-
tion in the field of think tank and consulting services and IT
services. Our diverse team of professionals has skills span-
ning a wide range of fields. By combining this comprehen-
sive expertise, we will continue to offer one-stop solutions to
complex needs, including the proposal, design, and imple-
mentation of government policies and corporate strategies.
Rapid globalization and technological innovation are cre-
ating needs and issues at an unprecedented speed and at a
level of complexity never before experienced. Yet these pro-
cesses are also providing us with new approaches to the
solution of these problems. The pace of ICT innovation has
been especially dramatic, leading to disruptive change and
unprecedented innovation in many fields. The MRI Group is
responding to these far-reaching contextual changes by
using structural and scientific analyses to predict the future,
develop visions, and provide appropriate solutions.
Through a process of self-transformation, we have
moved forward from our traditional role based on thinking,
to a new approach that encompasses both thinking and act-
ing—“Think & Act tank”. We will continue to work with our
customers to create new value by supporting the realization
of a positive vision for the future of society.
Today’s world is beset with many complex problems and
conflicts that seem to herald a turning point in history. Yet,
history teaches us that it is in turbulent times that new
orders and new values emerge. In 2020, Japan will host the
Olympic and Paralympic Games. We will also celebrate the
50th anniversary of the founding of the Mitsubishi Research
Institute in that year. Approaching the future beyond that
milestone, we will proceed with a renewed determination to
contribute to the development of a sustainable and prosper-
ous society.
The goal of the Mitsubishi Research Institute Group is to
co-create a brighter future in partnership with our clients.
We will remain faithful to that goal as we work to achieve
sustainable growth for individuals and the organization while
maintaining integrity and fairness in our business activities.
We hope to earn the continuing support of every stakeholder.

Think Tank and Consulting Services
IT Services
We have accumulated wide-ranging knowledge relating to policies, systems, social issues, and next-generation advanced technologies through our activities as an integrated think tank. In our survey, research, and consulting activities, we combine this knowledge with our analytical capabili-ties, including the measurement, assessment, and forecasting capabilities of researchers special-izing in various fields of science and technology.
Policy and Public AffairsWe provide policy recommendations, survey and research services, and consulting, together with implementation support based on knowledge from these activities, in fields that include regional and urban infrastructure, regional development, mobility, public health, healthcare and welfare, education, the environment/energy, science and technology, safety and disaster prevention, ICT, innovation, and cyber-security.
Enterprise ManagementOur services in this area include consulting on management strategies, organizations/human resources, robots, IoT, AI, financial systems, income maximization solutions, intellectual property, IT cost reduction, marketing optimization, and IT.
Mitsubishi Research Institute DCS is the hub company in this area. Using knowledge and next-gen-eration technologies accumulated through our think tank and consulting services, it provides sys-tems integration, outsourcing and services in sectors ranging from finance to manufacturing, distribution, and services. We also provide total support services for the use of ICT in business at all levels from upstream to downstream. Aspects covered include management system innovation and Internet-based busi-ness model innovation.
Examples of Our Services
Regional Development ConsultingWe support sustainable regional development initiatives tailored to regional situations and resources through our networks. We are able to draw on expertise through our networks of relationships with government departments, urban development workers in locations throughout Japan, and specialists and experts in various related fields.
Advanced Marketing through Big Data Analysis
We use big data analysis and scientific modeling to predict the individual purchasing behavior of end consumers as the basis for advanced one-to-one marketing. By using transac-tion data, statistics, awareness data, and other information, we are able to provide support at all stages from the formu-lation of policies focused on promising targets, to the devel-opment and implementation of specific actions.
Business Development Support Relating to Energy System Reform
Our activities in this area include the proposal of new business plans and marketing strategies that are precisely geared toward business opportu-nities created by system reforms in the electric power and gas sectors. We can propose wide-ranging business opportunities resulting from changes in these sectors, including retail liberalization, and the introduc-tion of storage batteries, renewable energy systems, smart meters, and electric vehicles.
IT Cost Reduction, Application Asset Visualization
System maintenance is a major system-related process. We visualize systems by reverse engineering the system main-tenance process. This helps to improve productivity and quality while also facilitating human resource development.
Innovation Policy Proposal and Innovation SupportWe can assist with the formulation of innovation-related policies, such as science and technology basic plans and industry-academia collaboration policies, as the basis for central and regional government policies designed to encourage science and technology development and promote innovation. We also offer multifaceted support, including strategy devel-opment and evaluation, to ensure sustainable success in other related areas, including new business development by private companies in the healthcare sector and other fields, and innovation-related projects under-taken by the government in collaboration with private companies.
Development and Administration of Market Risk Management Systems
Market risk management by megabanks requires advanced systems that support compliance with international regula-tions. We bring together human assets from our various group companies to provide total one-stop support encom-passing all stages from basic studies to the development and administration of systems.

Organizationally, the Mitsubishi Research Institute is
structured around its customer categories into the Policy
and Public Affairs Business Unit and the Enterprise
Management Business Unit. There is also a Research and
Development Unit, which is responsible for R&D and
business development across the entire company. These
three units work together to provide think tank and con-
sulting services.
Mitsubishi Research Institute DCS is the MRI Group’s
core company for IT services.
Our Organization
Think Tank and Consulting
Service
This unit proposes solutions to social issues and needs in the areas of national development, regional development, city man-agement, social security, healthcare, the environment/energy, sci-ence and technology, safety, and social ICT. It also provides support for the implementation of those solutions. MRI also acts as project principal for new projects relating to mega solar schemes and electricity system reforms. In the area of nuclear energy, we have contributed to the recovery in Fukushima Prefecture through our R&D work relating to the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station. We also propose specific responses and policies as starting points for policy devel-opment in relation to ICT policy, including the utilization of social ICT and public-private ICT, as well as support for the implementa-tion of those policies.
This unit supports clients’ business strategies by providing assis-tance with the creation of medium- to long-term business visions, and the development of new businesses that make optimal use of technical knowledge. It also provides new analysis results and knowledge through big data analysis of combinations of informa-tion owned by companies and publicly disclosed information. Operational support for clients includes the deployment of income maximization systems based on advanced data analysis, and the provision of systems to quantify and control credit risks and other types of risks.

IT Services
This unit combines concept development capabilities with the abil-ity to provide effective recommendations. It focuses on research into technologies that play a central role in forecasting, including social, economic, market and technology trend analysis, and social and business projection based on long-term forecasting tech-niques. It is also involved in the co-creation of new social models, including the planning, promotion, and realization of projects and policies through the Platinum Society Research Association and other types of industry-government-academia collaboration. Another priority for the Research and Development Unit is overseas expansion. By engaging in joint research and policy dialog with governmental bodies in various countries, it is able to create concepts with the potential to become national projects. One new area of business development is the application of artifi-cial intelligence (AI) technology to the services provided by MRI.

We use various opportunities to provide advice about the perspectives, approaches, and policies needed to realize a positive vision for the future. The starting points for this work are social issues and needs that require solutions. Our advice is backed by a combination of resources, including not only knowledge gained through conventional contract research, but also R&D, our own data, and the activities of research groups. Specifically, these resources result from research activities based on our unique scientific and interdisciplinary approach in fields that include research leading to advice about the society of the future and business development, our own Market Intelligence & Forecast System (a consumer market
forecasting system) based on data gathered through an annual 2,000-question survey with 30,000 partici-pants, the research activities of public-private sector study groups, such as the Platinum Society Research Association, and participation in commit-tees organized by the central government or public agencies. Once our advice has been formulated, it is pre-sented at symposiums and forums, as well as in our Phronesis series, which is published twice a year, and the MRI Monthly Review. We also make our find-ings available to the public through press releases, published articles in various media, lectures, and articles on our website.
Since its establishment, the Mitsubishi Research Institute has carried out contract surveys and research projects for public and private sector cli-ents. New surveys and research projects result not only from clients’ identification of issues and needs, but also from policy recommendations disseminated by MRI. For example, the Platinum Society Research Association has been issuing recommendations since its establishment in 2010. At the end of 2014, a recommendation concerning a Japanese version of the “Continuing Care Retirement Community” (CCRC) was adopted as government policy and is now the subject of a major program of surveys and deliberations by central and local government organizations.
We use various survey and research methods, but one of our key strengths in this area is the scientific and quantitative approach that we have developed through our long experience as an integrated think tank. We also employ knowledge-gathering through interview surveys in Japan and overseas, studies by expert committees, and brainstorming, as well as new methods, such as ideathons and hackathons. Private and public sector clients have applied results from our surveys and research in many areas. In the public sector, they have resulted in the enactment of new laws and ordinances and the pro-posal and adoption of new policies, while in the pri-vate sector, they have led to the creation of new businesses, products, and services.

Our consulting activities are based on knowledge accumulated over many years through our survey and research activities as an integrated think tank. We use a variety of consulting methods and exper-tise to provide our clients practical assistance toward the solution of a wide range of issues and needs. Our particular areas of expertise include analysis and strategy proposal based on logic and data, project management office (PMO) services to ensure steady progress toward the successful con-clusion of large-scale projects, and consulting on the development of complex, advanced systems infrastructure. Examples of our extensive services in this area include our contributions as a revenue management
pioneer to the development of seat management systems for the airline and railway operators, corpo-rate technological competitiveness assessment ser-vices based on our unique approach to patent analysis, and services to reduce the cost of main-taining IT applications. We have helped clients in numerous industries, including finance, transportation, distribution, energy, healthcare, and university administration, to improve revenues, reduce costs, restructure organi-zations, and develop and introduce new products, services and businesses.
Our broad involvement in this area ranges from sur-veys, research and consulting to the introduction and implementation of ICT, and the practical opera-tion of businesses (Act projects). Using wide-ranging knowledge and experience gained through our sur-veys, research and consulting activities, we play a direct role in the practical aspects of projects. At this level, we encounter issues directly and find solu-tions. The profound knowledge accumulated through this process allows us to enhance the qual-ity of future surveys, research, and consulting services. We have been involved in various Act projects, including investment in renewable energy schemes, the development of a Japanese version of the CCRC
business as part of regional revitalization efforts, the production of programs that effectively introduce Japanese companies in Asia, and the establishment of broadcasting mechanisms for those programs. We have established capital and business alli-ances with Japan Business Systems, Inc. (2014), which excels in the development and administration of information infrastructure based on Microsoft products and services, and with HR One Corporation (2015), a leader in the area of personnel and wage management outsourcing. These relationships will allow us to expand our involvement in the practical aspects of IT services.
