What makes color ‘sing?’
1. Dramatic light
the contrast of light and dark
To see the contrast, imagine what eachcolor would look like in black and white.

Elmer Bischoff
2. ‘warm’ and ‘cool’ varieties of the same color
Sarah Sense
Monet (detail)
Georgia O’Keefe
Draw thumbnail sketch on paper first
Block-in light & shadow
No detail
Then start painting on canvas or a fresh piece of paper
The painting doesn’t have to follow the sketch
What’s the procedure?
Paint from thin to thick, allow each layer to dry, block in the whole composition
4 colors mixed to make a variety of colorful grays:Black, white, (any) brown + (any) blueMixed together
1. Underpainting:Use black, white, brown and blue to do a “limited palette” panting.
2. Then use full-color on top of the first layer.
The photo is only a reference – here the photo is combined with color from Masaccio’s “Adam and Eve.”
Angela Pryor (inspired by Michelangelo)
Abstractions inspired by Georgia O’keefe’s painting of a house.

Experiment
Every picture doesn’t have to work.
The public only sees the ones that do.
Practice, practice, practice
Not to make a perfect picture
But to live your life the way
you want to.
