President’s Letter — by David Liebschutz

Happy Summer and the 4th of July!

Lots going on so I’ll get right to it:

First, although the NYS Legislature did

not pass the “3-Foot” safe passing law

and have New York join the other 27 states which have it

(including Ohio which just passed its version of the law),

we will continue to advocate for a safe passing distance with

our partners at the New York Bicycling Coalition.

For more information on this statewide education and

advocacy effort, go to the NYBC’s website (www.nybc.

net) or Facebook pages. Undoubtedly, this subject will

be part of the discussion at the September 15th New York

Bike Summit, which I will have more to say about in next

month’s BikeAbout.

MHCC board member and Century Chair Dr. Bill Leahey and his committee continue to finalize the details for

this year’s MHCC Century Ride on September 9 & 10 (at the Carlsbad Pavilion, Saratoga Spa Park). Registration

for the event is now only available through BikeReg at https://www.bikereg.com/mhcc-century-rides. The cost

will be $40 for members who preregister, and $50 on the day of the event. For non-members, it will be $50 for

preregistration, and $60 on the day of the event. The fee pays for two days of riding, lunch, and SAG support. If

you want to ride for free, please sign up to volunteer. Contact MHCC secretary and volunteer coordinator Jude

Sagor ([email protected]) or register on BikeReg as a volunteer. MHCC doesn’t have staff and in order to

keep doing this event each year (as well as all of the other things that we do), we need your help. With new routes

this year and craft beer and music at the end, the Century should be better than ever!

Finally, we are working with the Cambridge Valley Cycling Club about a joint club ride on September 17th up in

beautiful Washington County with a social event to follow. More details in August and on the web site.

Until next month, get out there and ride (safely)! And thank all of the ride leaders for their time and efforts…
