Today, on the European Day of
Languages 2008, we celebrate the
achievements of the winners of the
European Award for Languages and
the Language Ambassador awards.
The European Award for Languages
(formerly known as the Language
Label) is awarded to individuals or
to groups that use creative methods
to improve the quality of language
teaching and learning. It recognises the
importance of creating and sustaining
learner motivation and of making the
best use of available resources. This
year the jury had the difficult task of
selecting winning projects from the
highest ever number of applications.
Fifteen projects which demonstrated
excellence, dedication and innovation
in language teaching and learning
were chosen and are presented here
today. Crucially, they represent the
initiatives of individuals, communities
and groups to make a difference
in language learning. They are
indicative of ways in which language
professionals have creatively
responded to the complexities and
challenges of the present age. Their
pursuit of excellence in a range
of language learning situations
encouraged thoughtful discussion
among jury members. We are
confident, therefore, that these
award-winning initiatives will serve
as potential sources of inspiration
for projects in other contexts and
situations.
The purpose of The Language
Ambassador of the Year award is
to recognise the achievements of
individuals involved in the teaching
and promotion of languages from any

sector. The narratives and trajectories
of this year’s four winners provide
inspiring examples of how languages
are learned, used and promoted.
I want to take this opportunity to
thank the jury members whose
work and observations have
been remarkably insightful in the
adjudication process.
Again, we heartily congratulate the
individuals and the project teams
whose achievements are described in
this brochure.

ndaoine a bhuaigh An Duais Eorpach do
Theangacha mar aon le dámhachtainí
an Ambasadóra Teanga. Bronntar an
Duais Eorpach do Theangacha (dá
ngairtí an Lipéad Teanga roimhe seo) ar
dhaoine ar leith nó ar ghrúpaí a thagann
i dtír ar mhodhanna cruthaitheacha
chun feabhas a chur ar an gcaighdeán
ina múintear agus ina bhfoghlaimítear
teanga. Tugann sé aitheantas don
tábhacht a bhaineann le hinspreagadh
an fhoghlaimeora a chruthú agus
a bhuanú agus don úsáid is fearr a
bhaintear as na hacmhainní atá ar fáil.
Ba dheacair leis an gcoiste na tograí
buaiteacha a roghnú i mbliana as an líon
iarratas ba mhó riamh acu. Roghnaíodh
cúig cinn déag de thograí ina léiríodh
barr feabhais, dúthracht agus nuálacht i
bhfoghlaim agus i múineadh teangacha
agus tá siad sin ar taispeáint anseo
inniu. An rud is tábhachtaí ina dtaobh
ná gur léiriú iad ar na tionscnaimh
ó dhaoine ar leith, ó phobail agus ó
ghrúpaí a raibh d’intinn acu difríocht a
dhéanamh i gcás teanga a fhoghlaim.
Léiriú is ea iad ar shlite inar fhreagair
proifisiúnaithe teanga ar bhonn
cruthaitheach agus iad ag dul i ngleic le
castachtaí agus dúshláin na haoise seo.
Is mó sin díospóireacht mhachnamhach
a d’eascair i measc comhaltaí an ghiúiré
mar gheall ar an tóraíocht a bhí ag na
proifisiúnaithe céanna ar bharr feabhais
a bhaint amach i réimse de chúinsí
foghlama teanga. Tá lánmhuinín againn
mar sin go mb’fhéidir go bhfónfaidh
na tionscnaimh seo um dhámhachtain
a bhuachan mar fhoinsí inspioráide le
haghaidh tograí i gcomhthéacsanna
agus i gcúinsí eile.
Is í an aidhm atá leis an Duais
Ambasadóir Teanga na Bliana
ná aitheantas a thabhairt do na
mórghníomhartha ó dhaoine atá
bainteach le teangacha a mhúineadh
agus a chur chun cinn as cibé ar
bith earnáil den phobal. Is samplaí
inspioráideacha iad scéal an ceathrar
buaiteoir de chuid na bliana seo agus
an chonair a ghlac siad i dtaca le conas
a fhoghlaimítear, a úsáidtear agus a
chuirtear teanga chun cinn.
Is mian liom an deis seo a thapú chun

The Playgroup Italiano is a unique
project where parents and children
meet, play and learn. It takes place
once a week for 90 minutes in the Ilac
Centre Library in Dublin city centre.
All activities are carried out in Italian,
allowing the children to play and
enjoy themselves while learning and
practising the language. Parents have
the opportunity to meet other parents
with similar interests and obtain
material on bilingual education and
language acquisition.
The activities organised by the Italian
Playgroup include reading stories,
singing songs, playing games, drawing
and creating figures with clay, as well as
outdoor activities such as walks in the
park and guided visits for children in the
Botanic Gardens.
This is an innovative project combining
language learning with awareness
of bilingual issues which has proved
very helpful for children and parents.
Playgroups offer a unique opportunity
for early language learning and
language acquisition by bringing
together Irish children and children of
different communities in Ireland to
learn collectively in an exciting way.
Consequently, the Playgroup Italiano
model has the potential to be applied
to other minority languages spoken in
Ireland.
Playgroup Italiano has set up a website
to communicate with parents and
provide updates on bilingualism,
teaching materials and the playgroup’s
weekly schedule.

early learners. It supports parents’
efforts, helps maintain identity and
contributes to language learning and
appreciation of intercultural attitudes…

Historically, linguistic diversity
has been a characteristic of Irish
society. However, over recent decades,
new modes of linguistic exchange
have begun to appear in Ireland. Given
the changes in Ireland’s linguistic
landscape, it comes as little surprise
that Irish schools can be identified as
sites of linguistic diversity.
This project presents an example of a
primary school in Dublin where positive
initiatives have been taken to promote
linguistic diversity. Similar to many
of Dublin’s inner-city schools, Scoil
Plás Mhuire is characterised by its
linguistic diversity. At the school there
are children who can speak Albanian,
Bulgarian, Hindi, Mongolian, Polish,
Romanian, Spanish, Tagalog, Turkish,
Vietnamese and Yoruba.
A key aim of the project was to explore
with the teachers, some of the practical
and cost-effective ways in which they
could develop multilingual strategies
to promote linguistic diversity in their
classrooms. To do this, the school drew on
the outcomes of innovative multilingual
action research initiatives. Project activities
included multilingual storytelling, creating
multilingual cards and posters, learning
new words in different languages and
integrating multilingual activities into
the daily classroom routine of the Junior
Infants’ Class.
This project provides a replicable model
of good practice which can be adopted
in other school contexts to promote
languages as valuable resources to be
shared by all.
Jury commentsThe four to five year olds appear totally
engaged with the activities and proud
to share something of their home
language with the class. Children also
demonstrated with pleasure their
budding Irish language skills. Irish is
perceived as one language among all
the other languages in the classroom…
The partnership between teachers and
parents around language awareness
and the respect of language and cultural
diversity is core to this project as well as
initiating these values among the young
children.

ilteangacha a chomhtháthú le
gnáthimeachtaí laethúla an tseomra
ranga sna Naíonáin Sóisearacha.
Soláthraíonn an togra seo samhail
inmhacsamhlaithe de dheachleachtas
ar féidir í a ghlacadh i gcomhthéacsanna
eile de chuid na scoile chun teangacha
a chur chun cinn mar acmhainní
luachmhara ar féidir le gach duine iad a
roinnt le chéile.
Aiseolas ón nGiúiré Dealraíonn go mbíonn na leanaí ceithre
agus cúig bliana d’aois gafa go hiomlán
leis na gníomhaíochtaí agus mórtas

The aim of this project was to
integrate Spanish language learning
into the school curriculum at all levels.
To achieve this, the school set in place
a programme for each class level using
project work with a particular focus
e.g. song, drama, art, poetry, cookery
or ICT. Those involved in setting up
the programme included the school
principal, the visiting language teacher,
the class teachers, the Comenius
Assistant and Spanish teacher-training
students.
The programme is now incorporated
into the school plan and can be taught
by any class teacher and adjusted
to take into account the needs of
all pupils. It is envisaged that the
programme will be updated on a yearly
basis. The motivation and enthusiasm
for the Spanish language across the
wider school community is evident and
the cultural and linguistic awareness of
staff and pupils has been significantly
enhanced.
Jury commentsThis has been achieved by a highly
committed principal, who believes in
involving as many staff as possible,
and supported over the last three
years by the presence, for part of the
year, of a language assistant, a native
Spanish student teacher supplied under
the Comenius Programme. While the
school has a visiting teacher of Spanish
provided by MLPSI (Modern Languages
in Primary Schools Initiative) for fifth
and sixth classes, many of the other
teachers have learned a sufficient
amount of the language to enable them
to teach basic Spanish in their classes...
Posters and displays of Spanish words
and phrases reinforce the Spanish
atmosphere throughout the school
and the enthusiasm of the pupils
from the earliest ages was palpable
as they answered simple questions
in Spanish and showed their projects
on the Hispanic world…In choosing
Spanish, this school is promoting and
creating an awareness of a language
which heretofore has been less widely

a global sense, and is feeding students
of Spanish into three major second level
schools in the area, one of which was
persuaded by St Laurence’s to provide
Spanish as a follow-on for its pupils.

Soláthraíonn an togra seo solaoidí
praiticiúla faoi conas is cóir tabhairt faoi
fheasacht ar chultúir agus ar theangacha
ar shlí ghníomhach, rannpháirteach agus
thaitneamhach. Díríonn roinnt de na
gníomhaíochtaí ar fhocail a bhlaiseadh

Feasacht ar Theangacha agus ar Chultúir a Fhorbairt i Rang Spáinnise na Bunscoile trí Fhoghlaim Ghníomach agus trí Chaidreamh Idirchultúir

This project involves six rural primary
schools in the Corca Dhuibhne
peninsula of Co Kerry and one large
school in Tralee town.
The objective of the project is to bring
cultural and language awareness
into the Spanish class in an active,
innovative and creative way. This
initiative is particularly interesting
because most of the schools are located
in a Gaeltacht area and the project
reinforces a positive attitude towards
the Irish language.
Language diversity is celebrated
and promoted through the project
which incorporates the wider school
community. The task-based learning
includes activities such as writing pen
pal letters to schools in Spain, cooking
meals from Spanish-speaking countries,
drawing cultural maps, investigating
interesting facts about languages and
inviting guest speakers. Ultimately
the project aims to develop the pupils’
natural curiosity towards difference and
promotes their enjoyment by learning
through play.
This project offers practical examples
of how to approach language and
cultural awareness in an interactive,
participative and enjoyable way. Some
of the activities focus on experimenting
with words through tongue-twisters,
riddles, rhymes, poems, songs and
proverbs in three languages-Irish,
English and Spanish. The project
also attempts to instill in students,
an appreciation for languages and
language learning in general.

tasks including speaking, reading,
listening, singing, dancing, playing

of writing, artwork and project work…
The teacher displayed great motivation
in her energetic approach and in her
rapport with the children… The project
provides contacts across national
borders as the children have pen pals
in Spain with whom they correspond.
Cultural awareness is also central
to this language learning project as
comparisons are drawn with traditions,
festivals, food etc.

students, Class Barbara, from Loreto
Secondary School, Navan, have gone
online with one of the most captivating
web journals ever posted. And oh là
là, did we happen to mention these
blogs are all written en français? Under
the guidance of their French and ICT
teachers, logging on to learn has
become an integral part of students’
language learning experience.
As such, blogging in French has proved
an extremely innovative and fun way
for the students to develop their skills
in the target language. As the portal
name puts it, once introduced to the
thrills and spills of the Class Barbara
blog, it promises to become the
sun, moon and stars of any surfer’s

The underlying aim of Abair Leat! is to
both widen and extend the effect and
influence of Gaeltacht courses from the
traditional course period.
While the Abair Leat! lessons and
exercises are optional for our students, we
are extremely satisfied with the high rate
of student participation. Many students
attempt several of the lessons and
exercises before coming on the summer
courses.
Abair Leat! saves learners’ scores along
with their progress, and this is a major
source of motivation.
The emphasis is placed on the sounds
and pronunciation of Gaeilge, through the
use of colloquial, everyday conversation.
Learners are given an opportunity to
compare their own recordings with the
original, and they are able to re-record
their attempts as often as needed.
After having undertaken the lessons and
exercises in Abair Leat!, we would like to
think that learners would have a greater
desire to use the Gaeilge that they already
have.
The principle aim of Coláiste Lurgan is
to aid anybody wishing to improve their
Gaeilge, and as a result it is our pleasure to
announce that learners from all over the
world are welcome to attempt the Abair
Leat! exercises.

The TaLLICo project provides an
ongoing forum for meaningful
intercultural dialogue between full-
time students and visiting Erasmus
students. The project was initiated
by the lecturers in Intercultural
Communication and Languages at
WIT, and formed a compulsory part of
continuous assessment for the learners.
The idea of the project began to form
when the coordinators noticed that
there was little intercultural dialogue
between Erasmus and Irish students.
A second concern was to provide
participants with the opportunity for
a lived experience in order to inject
reality and meaningfulness into the
concepts associated with intercultural
communication theory.
The aims of the initiative are to:
encourage social interaction and
collaboration between learners of
different languages at WIT
provide a framework for autonomous,
active use of language outside the
context of formal instruction
bridge the gap between knowledge
of theories of intercultural
communication presented in
lectures and to develop the learners’
intercultural communicative
competence
maximize the unique human
resources presented by Erasmus
exchange programmes, by providing
opportunities for face-to-face
intercultural dialogue.
At the start of the semester students
are introduced to the principles of
autonomy and reciprocity of tandem
Tandem Learning for Intercultural Communication (TaLLICo) Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT)
language learning. Participants are
then encouraged to find a partner who
is a native-speaker of the language
they are learning with whom they
will collaborate for a minimum of five
meetings. As the initiative progresses,
plurilingualism is encouraged and some
students have begun to learn languages
other than their initial target language.

Students returning from their Erasmus
year have given it a vote of confidence

The Creation and Everyday Running of a French SME – A French Language
Simulation aims to promote language learning and the development of transferable skills in learners through a ‘learning by doing’ approach. It integrates and therefore enhances many aspects of real life skills such as:
ICT skills e.g. Web, word processing, Excel, PowerPoint, production of audio files
students’ individual strengths and expertise in the languages and business areas and other skills not necessarily traditionally associated with language learning e.g. creativity, artistic talent
transferable communication skills e.g. chairing of meetings, negotiation skills, oral presentation skills and liaising skills, all through the target language
other transferable skills e.g. organisation and follow-up skills, time management, analytical skills and solution seeking, leadership qualities, awareness of personal strengths and weaknesses, team working skills.
This project promotes learner autonomy by increasing self-driven, rather than grade-driven, motivation, and by giving the students ownership of their project. Although this particular simulation targets third level students of languages and business and extends over 40-50 hours, the objectives and the duration are very flexible and may be adapted to suit lower linguistic levels over a small number of hours in any area of personal or professional interest to the students.

labs, the Pairing Study Programme,
Chinese Corner Activities, Chinese
films, self-designed conversations and
performance, Chinese word puzzles,
games, competitions and calligraphy
are all used to assist students to
master the basic language skills and
to inspire their interest in Chinese
language and culture.
As one student commented ‘The
Chinese language is one that looks
completely unapproachable, but with
the right attitude and the support of our
teachers, it is actually more of a “really
big hill” than a mountain! The pride I felt
when I first realised I could read a page
of Chinese script and write paragraphs in
Chinese is indescribable. The progress is
clearly visible and the effort well worth
making.’
Learning Chinese is an extraordinary
and satisfying experience
through which students can immerse
themselves in a different culture.
The Chinese Learning and Teaching
Programme in Irish Higher Education
is coordinated by Dr Huan Xiong who
works at the Irish Institute of Chinese
Studies at UCC. The programme aims to
promote Chinese linguistic and cultural
awareness in Ireland and to equip
students with linguistic, social and
cultural competences along with the
confidence to work with Chinese and
global organisations.
One hundred students have participated
in this project since it was initiated by
the Irish Institute of Chinese Studies
at UCC in September 2006. The
language teaching is based on Pinyin
(phonetic and tonal system) and Hanzi
(ideographic written system), which are
currently the most common methods
used in Chinese language teaching.
In addition, this project uses dynamic

Cruthaíonn an togra seo nasc ar leithligh
idir mic léinn in institiúidí den dara agus
den tríú leibhéal. Braitheann na mic
léinn go bhfuil siad i lár an chuilithe sa
teanga agus is togra mac léinn-lárnach ar
bhealach nua atá ann. Is iad na mic léinn
féin a dhéanann eadránú ar chumarsáid

L’Italia in DirettaOllscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh
The project L’Italia in diretta is run by the Department of Italian at the
National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) in conjunction with final year students of the Bachelor of Commerce International (Italian) degree under the supervision of Dr Laura Incalcaterra McLoughlin and Dottore Francesca Magnoni. Technical support is provided by the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (NUIG).
The project consists of an interactive website www.italianliving.org, specifically designed and managed by undergraduate students for students of secondary schools in Ireland. The website is in English and Italian to stimulate interest among those who already study the language and those who are new to this subject. It is an on-going project which will continue to expand in future years. It currently covers the following topics relating to Italian culture and society from a contrastive and intercultural perspective: music, sport, fashion and entertainment. Seasonal topics were added as required e.g. Christmas, Easter.
The project aims to promote awareness of Italian culture, society and language through transmission of information from students to students, and to create an easily accessible, virtual meeting point so that those who are already studying Italian or are interested in the Italian language and civilization can feel part of a larger community.
This project creates a unique link between second and third level students and institutions. It is student-centered in a new and involving manner. Intercultural communication is mediated by students on the basis of their own personal experience.
Jury commentsThe project clearly and creatively meets the needs of undergraduate learners of Italian returning from their study year abroad. While the provision of suitable courses that counter attrition following the year abroad has been problematic elsewhere, this initiative involving not just the learners themselves, but also post-primary learners and other learners of Italian, is most impressive and highly
commendable… The motivation of the project leader was apparent. Students were highly motivated and used Italian as the language of communication during the classes in which they worked on the website.

The NDLR Modern Languages’
Community of Practice (CoP) Blog
was officially launched on the European
Day of Languages, 26 September
2006. The primary aim of the blog is
to provide a one-stop-shop web space
to support and encourage information
exchange and dissemination across
the Higher Education languages’
community.
The blog provides an easy-to-use,
dynamic and accessible community
web space to highlight weekly language
news items, community member
contact details, and lists a range of
language events, including conferences,
meetings, book launches and social
events. Audio and video podcasts
facilitate the promotion of modern
language initiatives, research interests,
and web seminars from Irish and
international contributors.
Community members can access NDLR
(National Digital Learning Repository)
project information, downloadable
resources, such as NDLR user guides,
and details on how to gain access to the
NDLR, which currently hosts over 300
free language-specific learning objects.
The final year of the project is focused
on ensuring the sustainability of the
blog beyond the NDLR pilot project end
date, December 2008. Guest editors
from the languages community have
recently helped drive the vision of the
blog to truly reflect the demands of all
language practitioners. In summary, the
blog provides a valuable service to the
language community, helping to build
and enhance community spirit across
language sectors.
Jury commentsThe motivation of the project team
was impressive. The service has created
a community of practice, apparently
motivating its members to use a
sustainable space to share information
and expertise. Having a platform to
share and disseminate information,
activities and achievements tends
to motivate teachers and lecturers
in the same way as participation in
a conference does, where collegiality
and co-participation often give rise
to ideas and innovation and are a
source of encouragement… ICT use and
development are impressive.

French.ie is a portal website created by and for French teachers in Ireland.
The site provides resource material for teachers and the opportunity to consult pedagogical material online.
The main feature of the site is the resource finder which is designed to permit the teacher or user direct access to the web resources they require. Readers choose the level, skill and theme they plan to cover in class and can find specific web pages that have been selected and catalogued by practising teachers of French. The website includes a forum and regular newsletter to support the teaching of French in Ireland. It offers an ideal opportunity to expand and extend the use of ICT in language teaching.
The development of the site was initiated by the French Embassy in Ireland and is a product of collaboration between the French Embassy, the National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE) and the Education Department at NUI Maynooth. An initial consultative committee involved
representatives from the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA), the Post-Primary Inspectorate of the Department of Education and Science, the French Teachers Association, Dublin City University, University of Limerick and Waterford Institute of Technology. French.ie is part of the broader Scoilnet initiative–the Department of Education and Science’s portal for Irish education–and therefore benefits from being part of a widely recognised name within Irish education.
Jury commentsThis portal is the perfect tool to find resources designed to practise all the four major language skills (writing, speaking, listening and reading)… The activities to which it provides access ensure the practice of the four major skills and help avoid boredom and lack of motivation due to lack of variety and the repetition of the same activity model… The French Embassy has expressed an interest in using it in other non-francophone countries.

The Signall project was developed by
Interesource Group (Ireland) Limited
as part of the Leonardo da Vinci Call
for Proposals 2005. It was developed
to create an awareness of Deaf culture
and Sign Languages and to cultivate
a behavioral change among employer
bodies, educational establishments,
public authorities and society as a
whole, in the way people who are Deaf
are perceived and treated.
The objective of the project coordinators
was to involve organisations and
experts from across the EU in
promoting the needs of the Deaf
community, a linguistic and cultural
minority, particularly with regard to
language recognition and employment.
The Signall consortium, supporters and
patrons comprises organisations in the
Czech Republic, Finland, Ireland, Spain
and the UK. The Signall project aims to:
raise awareness of the Deaf
community and culture
introduce people to the fundamentals
of Sign Languages
develop guidelines for organisations
and individuals on how to improve their
communication skills with Deaf people
disseminate information to target
groups on the employment needs and
requirements of Deaf people
encourage employers to support and
promote Sign Language courses for
employees
identify good-practice organisations
who have put in place specific
measures to accommodate the needs
of customers or employees who are
deaf.

Quartiers FrancophonesNEARfm
Quartiers francophones is a French
language cultural radio programme
that is broadcast every Saturday at
5pm on NEAR90fm. The title of the
programme was carefully chosen to
be inclusive of the wide francophone
community based in Dublin. Quartiers
implies a centre for the local community
and the plural was used to represent
the various francophone communities
– Native French speakers, including
members of the many worldwide
francophone communities living here
in Dublin. The programme also keeps
in mind the non-francophone speaker,
particularly Irish lovers of the French
language and culture and school
children and students who are studying
the language. Quartiers francophones is
a continuation of more than a decade of
ongoing French language initiatives by
NEAR90fm.
The programme can be listened to live
on the internet and regular podcasts
are posted, allowing listeners to enjoy
a backlog of programmes. This enables
learners of French to listen to the
language at their own pace.
The radio station runs four courses
each year for those interested in
becoming involved in community radio
and several francophone participants
have progressed from these courses
to help on the production of Quartiers
francophones. NEAR90fm also
encourages francophones to participate
on work experience placements at the
radio station and several interns have
been involved in the making of the
programme.
Jury commentsVery high level of motivation from
the broadcaster’s perspective and
very strong support from the station
director… The broadcaster is neither a
native speaker nor a perfect speaker of
the language. As such he is a good role
model to promote the use of a modern
language by all speakers with the
motivation to communicate
at their level… Very strong
use of new technology
(podcasting) and
intercultural dialogue
with an emphasis in the
programme on the dialogue
dimension of ‘quartiers’.

…à la française provides an exciting
new approach to beginner
level French. It is based on the principles
of Content and Language Integrated
Learning (CLIL) and is one of the first
sets of resources that aims to embed the
learning of French in the wider primary
curriculum.
Pupils learn meaningful content in Maths,
Geography, History, Science, Art and
Physical Education through stimulating
activities conducted through French. Each
unit provides support for the teacher in
the form of lesson plans, transcripts,
suggestions for further activities and
PowerPoint presentations. For example
the art units contain a presentation of a
set of paintings by Matisse which are used
to help pupils learn colours, shape and
composition; in a Maths unit, the children
play dominoes; in a history unit they take
part in a Viking market. All of this learning
is carried out through French.
This resource was developed and
published by Authentik Language
Learning Resources Ltd and the units were
written by practising teachers. Through
the assistance of COGG (An Chomhairle um
Oideachas Gaeltachta agus Gaelscolaíochta)
this resource has already been translated in
order to teach French in Gaelscoileanna.
Jury commentsCost-effectiveness is a feature of the project
in that it is developing readily available
classroom resources which will be available
to teachers interested in utilising CLIL in
teaching Irish and French… The CLIL concept
in itself is not unique nor are any of the
interfaces. However, to amalgamate all
materials into a user friendly textbook is a
unique formula in presenting a one-stop-
shop for primary schools which fits in with
the principles of the primary curriculum.

Amel Yacef began the pilot project
Schools Cultural Mediation Project in
ten schools in September 2007. She
worked with schools which have a high
intake of pupils with little or no English
and whose parents have difficulties
integrating. She personally promoted
her intercultural work by calling to
local schools, projects and agencies
where she soon became a familiar and
friendly face. She sourced interpreters
for events such as parent-teacher
meetings and arranged for translators
to translate each school’s policies and
documents into the various languages
spoken by the school communities. Her
focus on integration was the driving
force behind many intercultural events
and activities, and she went above and
beyond her remit in cultural mediation,
which she carried out on a voluntary
basis.

Since 2000, as coordinator of the
Post-Primary Languages Initiative,
Brídín Gilroy has used her considerable
powers of persuasion and diplomacy as
well as her formidable organisational
abilities in running a project that has
significantly diversified language
education in the Irish Post-Primary
System: by strengthening and
promoting Spanish and Italian which
were already in the system and by
introducing two languages, Japanese
and Russian.
Materials development, awareness-
raising and additional teacher training
have resulted in an increased uptake
of the initiative’s target languages.
Brídín Gilroy’s work provides a possible
template for the further diversification
of languages in Irish schools.

Déirdre Kirwan is Principal of Scoil
Bhríde Girls’ School where 70 per cent
of the students are non-Irish nationals.
Déirdre encourages maintenance
of literacy in the first language and
encourages parents and children to
speak their own language at home.
Bilingual parents help to translate
letters from the school into the various
other languages spoken by the school
community thus maximising parental
involvement in school life. Déirdre
gives courses in EAL (English as an
Additional Language) to teachers from
other schools and actively promotes
the Irish language. French is taught
to all children in Fifth and Sixth Class.
Signs, greetings, dual-language books
and CD-Roms add to the rich language
environment of Scoil Bhríde Girls’
School. Linguistic and cultural diversity
are actively promoted by Déirdre
Kirwan, the Principal.
Dr Lorraine LeesonCentre for Deaf Studies
Trinity College Dublin
Dr Lorraine Leeson is regarded
internationally as one of the most
qualified in her discipline. She has been
engaged in using and promoting Sign
Language in her every day professional
life, qualifying in 1992 as the first
professionally trained Irish Sign
Language (ISL)/British Sign Language
(BSL) interpreter in Ireland. She was
directly responsible for the creation of
Deaf studies and interpreting courses
at the Centre for Deaf Studies where
she is the Director. Dr Leeson was the
first Irish woman to qualify with a
Ph.D in an ISL-related area and was the
instigator of the Signs of Ireland Corpus
project which is the largest of its kind
in the world. Apart from her extensive
portfolio of publications and global
presentations, she is an active member
of the Deaf community.

The European Day of Languages is a
Council of Europe initiative and has
been celebrated on 26 September since
2001, the European Year of Languages.
Convinced that linguistic diversity
is a tool for enhanced intercultural
understanding and unifying European
neighbours, the Council of Europe
promotes cultural richness and
multilingualism throughout Europe.
The aims of the European Day of
Languages are:
to alert the public to the importance
of language learning
to increase awareness and
appreciation of all the languages
spoken in Europe
to encourage lifelong language
learning

prerequisite for living together

its borders. The European Centre for
Modern Languages, Graz, Austria,
assists in this challenge by encouraging
excellence and innovation in language

Léargas is the Irish National Agency
for the management of national,
European and international exchange
and cooperation programmes.
The two main European Commission
funded programmes managed by
Léargas are:
Lifelong Learning Programme – for
schools, vocational training and lifelong
learning opportunities
Youth in Action – for youth and
community work opportunities
These programmes aim to bring a
European dimension to education,
training, and youth and community
work. The programmes allow young
people and those who work with them
to benefit from building links with
others who work and learn in similar
fields right across Europe. Funding is
generally supplied to organisations that
can then enable people to work with
each other in school projects, to improve
their language skills, to cooperate on
shared issues and challenges, and to
create new and innovative training
methods.
Léargas
As well as these programmes, Léargas
runs other youth and educational
exchange projects and programmes
such as WorldWise, Causeway, East-West Schools and eTwinning.
The National Centre for Guidance
in Education and the North South
Exchange Consortium also operate as
part of the Léargas network.

gcuid scileanna teanga a fheabhsú,
chun comhoibriú le chéile ar dhúshláin
agus ar shaincheisteanna atá comónta
eatorthu, agus chun modhanna oiliúna
nua agus nuálacha a chruthú.
