Janson, in fact, has become adept at playing just a couple songs in a set, given that he’s nearing 200 appearances at the Grand Ole Opry, where acts parade through with typically short performances. In fact, he literally cut his teeth across the alley from the Opry-associated Ryman Auditorium at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge when he first arrived in Nashville circa 2004. “You’d see Opry stars going in there, famous singers and stuff, and I really wanted that bad,” he remembers. “I always wanted two things: to get on the radio and have hits as a singer, and [just] be on the Opry, let alone be a member. Certainly when you think about it, it’s sort of an unachievable goal, but then it happens. It’s so amazing.” From his first days in Tennessee, Music Row courted Janson. He flirted with Sony Music Nashville in 2005, and the label even took him to New York for the 2005 Country Music Association Awards. There, he ended up part of an impromptu piano-bar moment with producer Tony Brown at the keys as George Strait, Lee Ann Womack, Keith Urban, Alabama’s Randy Owen and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s Jeff Hanna sang — along with the then-clean-shaven Janson. “It was my first real moment of feeling like I had made it,” recalls Janson. “I hadn’t. I felt like I had.” Music Row continued to toy with him. He signed with BNA in 2009, briefly landing one title on Hot Country Songs (“ ’Til a Woman Comes Along,” which peaked at No. 52). When Chris Janson hit the stage at Charlie Daniels’ Volunteer Jam on March 7, he arrived in what passes for midshow form for many acts: bouncing, cheerleading, fully wired.

Attaining that sort of animation — particularly for just one or two songs — is unnatural to most, but it’s baked into the DNA for Janson, a Mountain Dew-g u zzl i ng bot t le of ent hu siasm whether he’s blowing a harp for 10,000 people or answering a dopey question about his boots on an awards-show red carpet.

Janson, in fact, has become adept at playing just a couple songs in a set, given that he’s nearing 200 appearances at the Grand Ole Opry, where acts parade through with typically short performances. None of those appearances is more important than the one he will make on March 20, when Janson is officially inducted as the newest Opry member. And he’ll likely be a ball of energy as he rolls into that landmark performance.

“If you asked me to stand still onstage, I don’t know that I could,” he says in a Warner Music Nashville publicity office that overlooks 16th Avenue. “Music makes me move. It’s hard to explain. It’s how I’m genetically made.”

Acceptance into the Opry is an achievement for any act, but it has particular meaning for Janson, who was close to stardom for years before he found it for himself. In fact, he literally cut

his teeth across the alley from the Opry-associated Ryman Auditorium at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge when he first arrived in Nashville circa 2004.

It’s so amazing.”

From his first days in Tennessee, Music Row courted Janson. He flirted with Sony Music Nashville in 2005, and the label even took him to New York for the 2005 Country Music Association Awards. the-scenes assist by writing hits for other acts, including Tim McGraw’s “Truck Yeah” and LoCash’s “I Love This Life,” two songs that typify Janson’s exuberance.

He, of course, found his footing when Bobby Bones started playing his single “Buy Me a Boat” in 2015, while Janson was still unsigned. “Boat” went to No. 2 on Hot Country Songs that year, while the laid-back celebration “Fix a Drink” peaked at No. 2 on Country Airplay in 2017.

Now that he’s becoming a familiar name to country fans, his Opry membership arrives at a time when he’s enjoying a most unlikely hit. “Drunk Girl,” a contemplative piano ballad built around a moral crossroads, has become a concert highlight, with ticket-holders flashing their cell phones and singing along to its good-guy chorus. Janson has seemingly tapped into a thread of positive cultural character at a time when it’s tough to find on cable TV.

“The band barely plays, it’s just a solo performance in the middle of a huge arena live show, and you can hear a freaking pin drop,” marvels Janson. “People are listening, they’re getting the message, and they’re executing [it].”

“Drunk Girl” gives the audience a wider lens on Janson, contrasting the rowdy onstage dynamo with the family-values persona that exists outside the limelight. When he authored “Buy Me a Boat,” he cut the co-writing session short so he could tend to his four kids, then came back to finish the song days later. That attitude shows through in Everybody (which Warner Music Nashville released in September 2017), where his normal-guy rumination “Bein’ a Dad” occupies space alongside the muscular “Who’s Your Farmer,” the anthemic “Our World” and the swampy Southern rocker “Little Bit of Both.”

“As a man, if you put your wife and your kids first, everything else falls into place always,” he says. “If it was the other way around, I would be fearful at what kind of repercussions I could bring. So I choose not to live that way.”

That choice affects his bottom line — he earned his pilot’s license and flies back to Nashville as often as possible from the road (“You cannot buy enough time at home,” McGraw once told him). And the passion for his family affects his songwriting, too. Janson often writes in the wee hours of the morning or spends the night scouring classic country videos to find new inspiration and learn more about his craft.

“Any man with a wife and kids can attest that they stay up all night when everybody else is sleeping,” he says. “You hear a creak in the wall or something, and you’re up.”

With his March 20 induction, Janson becomes a member of the Opry family. Urban extended the invitation during a show at the Ryman on Feb. 5 — highly appropriate, since he was one of the established stars at Janson’s side during the 2005 piano-bar moment in New York. Daniels is scheduled to perform the same night Janson joins, and unless he’s singing “Drunk Girl,” it’s likely that Janson will be keyed up through the entire induction.

“When I’m on the Opry in particular, I am really stoked to be there, so I can’t hide that,” he says. “That’s real excitement. It’s not me trying to entertain anybody or get attention or nothing. I’m just genuinely excited to be there. It’s freaking cool.”

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE MARCH 19, 2018 | PAGE 2 OF 20

Singer-songwriter Chris Stapleton reaches the summit of Billboard’s Country Airplay chart for the first time as “Broken Halos” (Mercury) ascends 2-1 in its 35th week on the list (dated March 24). It increases by 2 percent to 41.2 million audience impressions in the week ending March 18, according to Nielsen Music.

On Hot Country Songs, which blends streaming, airplay and sales data, “Halos” holds at its No. 5 peak, which it initially reached on the chart dated March 3. The track ranks at No. 6 on Country Digital Song Sales (13,000 downloads sold in the week ending March 15) and No. 17 on Country Streaming Songs (5.4 million U.S. streams).

The organic-styled “Halos,” which Stapleton wrote with Mike Henderson, is the second single from the former’s From A Room: Volume 1, which arrived atop Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart dated May 27, 2017, with 219,000 equivalent album units earned in its first week. The set has spent eight weeks at No. 1 on Top Country Albums and 13 weeks atop Americana/Folk Albums. It has earned 961,000 units to date, including 741,000 in traditional album sales.

Thanks to the Dave Cobb-produced LP and “Halos,” Stapleton is the first male, and the fifth act, to have topped both Americana/Folk Albums and Country Airplay (or, before the latter list’s 1990 inception, Hot Country Songs). He follows Mary Chapin Carpenter, Rosanne Cash, Alison Krauss and Dolly Parton in notching a No. 1 country song and a leading title on Americana/Folk Albums, which began in 2009.

Meanwhile, Stapleton’s 2015 set Traveller holds the record for the most weeks at No. 1 on Americana/Folk Albums: 42. It most recently led the March 17-dated chart, and it led Top Country Albums for 29 weeks.

“Halos” marks Stapleton’s sixth appearance on Country Airplay. The launch single from Volume 1, “Either Way,” debuted at its No. 26 peak on the May 20, 2017, chart. He sports one additional Country Airplay top 10: “Nobody to

Blame” (No. 10; April 2, 2016). His other three entries: “Parachute” (No. 17, 2017), “Tennessee Whiskey” (No. 57, 2016) and “What Are You Listening To?” (No. 46; 2013).

KKBQ Houston PD Johnny Chiang says that he “can’t put a finger on why” “Halos” has outperformed other Stapleton songs on Country Airplay. “ ‘Broken Halos’ is simply a great modern country song with a traditional flavor, just like ‘Parachute,’ ‘Nobody to Blame’ and ‘What Are You Listening To?’ ” he says. “Chris’ music has always done very well for KKBQ.”

Says WWQM Madison, Wis., PD Fletcher Keyes, “Stapleton played for our listeners several years ago in a showcase we call Storytellers Jam. Ever since his appearance, which was amazing, all of his music has tested phenomenally here. I mean, once you hear Stapleton’s voice, you’re sold.”

Considering that Stapleton’s production is more stripped down than other, more pop-leaning fare on country radio, Keyes says that the sound is an important ingredient to the format’s recipe. Stapleton’s style is “really essential. It helps us maintain a balance, and he keeps us honest. Speaking for our audience, it seems like the listeners just can’t seem to get enough of him.”

‘WAY’ TO GO Brett Eldredge banks his seventh Hot Country Songs top 10 as “The Long Way” (Atlantic/Warner Music Nashville) lifts 11-10. The song holds at its No. 6 high on Country Airplay (31.5 million, up 4 percent).

Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line’s “Meant to Be” (Warner Bros./Big Machine Label Group) dominates Hot Country Songs for a 16th week. On the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, the song pushes 5-4, matching FGL’s best career rank. The duo’s debut smash, “Cruise,” climbed to No. 4 on the Hot 100 in July 2013. “Meant” moves 9-7 on Country Airplay, up 14 percent to 30.1 million impressions with Most Increased Audience honors for a second consecutive week.

MUSIC NOTESRestoration, an all-star tribute to Elton John/Bernie Taupin songs, leads the pack among new albums with upcoming release dates. The Universal Music Group Nashville project — which coincides with a pop tribute titled Revamp — finds Chris Stapleton, Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town and Willie Nelson among the acts covering both familiar hits and album cuts. Restoration comes out April 6. The news comes on the heels of Monument’s March 16 rerelease of Walker Hayes’ 8 Tracks Vol. 1 & 2. Also on the way are Red Shahan’s Culberson County, March 30 (Thirty Tigers); Jason Boland & The Stragglers’ Hard Tim es , May 18 (Thirty Tigers); and The Travelin’ McCourys’ s el f-t it led projec t — featuring brothers Ronnie and Rob McCoury — May 25 (McCoury Music/RED).

Two rising young females make their Grand Ole Opry debuts in the coming weeks. Kalie Shorr, who used the Song Suffragettes weekly showcase in Nashville as a building block on the way to becoming a SiriusXM “Highway Find,” will appear on the WSM-AM Nashville show on March 31. A week later, Rebel Engine artist Stephanie Quayle will have her Opry introduction on April 7. She’s likely to perform current single “Selfish,” No. 37 on the Billboard Country Indicator chart.

Kane Brown earned Guinness World Records status when he became the first artist to simultaneously top five Billboard country charts on Oct. 28, 2017: Top Country Albums, Country Digital Song Sales, Country Airplay, Hot Country Songs and Country Streaming Songs. In his wake, indie artist Scott Helmer set another Guinness mark by playing 12 concerts in 12 cities in a 24-hour period. The feat took place Nov. 28-29, 2016, in California and Arizona. Hunter Hayes held the record for a time when he did 10 shows in 24 hours May 9-10, 2014.

PBS show Bluegrass Underground moves to a new location as The Caverns opens to the public on March 24 in Pelham, Tenn. Billy Strings and the Sweet Lizzy Project will play the inaugural show in the 13-episode season, which also counts Kathy Mattea, Turnpike Troubadours and Sam Bush among its guests. Other acts playing non-PBS concerts in the cave this year include Steve Earle & The Dukes, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and John Anderson.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE MARCH 19, 2018 | PAGE 14 OF 20

In another setting, a song titled “Best Shot” might have contained a few pointed metaphors: “Right on target,” “Gunning for your love” or — as Pat Benatar put it in “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” — “Fire away.”

There are no such phrases in Jimmie Allen’s “Best Shot” — no hearts going “bang, bang,” no taking aim at someone’s love and no “missing the mark.” That said, the guy in the song certainly recognizes that he has, indeed, missed the mark in his past attempts at romance.

“I feel like this was the first song that I really opened up and was just honest with my past relationships where you have someone special and you kind of take it for granted,” says Allen. “That’s life — you’re young, you’re having a good time, you don’t really realize how great she is until she slides out of your arms.”

Allen’s first-ever single, “Best Shot” blends humility, hope and vulnerability — the kinds of sensitivity that over-the-top cleverness might cover up.

“One of the main complaints women have is that we’re not quote unquote ‘intimate’ with our conversations,” says Allen. “We don’t open up too much. And now for me, this is a song that said everything I wanted to say and couldn’t say it.”

Born and raised in Delaware, Allen is familiar with hard knocks — both in his love life and his career. He lived in his car for a short period after moving to Nashville in 2007, and just two years ago, he was still waiting tables at a Bonefish Grill seafood restaurant in Franklin, Tenn., during the day and stocking shelves at Walmart overnight. And while he held down those two jobs, he diligently continued honing his songwriting and finding the sweet spot in his smooth delivery.

As fate would have it, Allen was a late replacement for another performer at a three-person songwriter showcase at Puckett’s Grocery. And he shared the round with another last-minute fill-in, Wide Open Music Group president Ash Bowers, who charted three singles as an artist with Stoney Creek in 2010-2011. Bowers was impressed, and within 48 hours, Allen had a publishing deal.

“One of the things that made him so unique was he had been writing songs that were great, [but] he wasn’t writing with the typical guys in town that are writing hit songs,” says Bowers. “By default, he just didn’t have the relationships to get in those rooms, and it made it something fresh, because it was all being created in a different place with different people.”

Allen’s most frequent collaborators, Major Bob Music staff writers J.P. Williams and Josh London, were on hand when Allen subsequently introduced the “Best Shot” idea during a four-way writing session, but that fourth participant wasn’t feeling it and they moved on. When the three J’s — Jimmie, Josh and J.P. — reconvened a week later, Allen was still obsessed with the melody and suggested they readdress it. The song leaned on relationship advice from Allen’s grandmother — that women want a guy who’s willing to let down his guard and show his true self. The song was basically a pledge to give it his “best shot.” The writers took an approach that matched that idea.

“We were just coming at it in a real place, maybe less as songwriters [trying to] see how clever we can be and more about communicating a real emotion,” says Williams. “Honesty resonates with people, and it’s sometimes hard to come by these days.”

They carved out the chorus first, giving it a visual sensibility by comparing the woman’s smile in the opening line to a sunset over the coast of California.

“The hardest part was rhyming with it,” says Allen. “ ‘There’s no doubt, because of you, I’m not the man I was before ya.’ Who knew that we were

about to rhyme ‘ya’ with ‘California?’ ”Once the chorus was completed, they turned to the first verse, encapsulating

the disappointments and broken spirit that marked the guy’s life prior to his love’s arrival. The second verse embraced the turn-around he experienced after

she appeared.“Guys do dumb things, at least in my life

experience, but a woman’s touch always makes things a little bit better,” says London. “You do things that you shouldn’t a little bit less, and you do things that you should a little bit more. It’s all looking forward to the positives.”

The entire song is written over a four-chord pattern that varies only once — at the bridge, a short couple lines that reflect on the start of the relationship and its spiritual value.

“That bridge was all Jimmie,” says London. “When we got finished with the second chorus, Jimmie just blurted it out, out of the middle of nowhere.”

When he heard a rough Instagram performance, Bowers asked Allen to demo it, and they put together a version that had standard big drums and heavy guitars. Unfortunately, “Best Shot” seemed to lose its mojo. But Allen wasn’t done with it.

“I just couldn’t leave this song alone,” he says. “I would play it all the time at my house just with my acoustic.”

That proved to be key. He performed it publicly for the first time at the Bluebird Café on Dec. 17, 2016, doing a guitar/vocal version that revived Bowers’ interest. Two months later, Allen played a full-band version of “Best Shot” for the first time during a showcase on Feb. 28, 2017, at The Country. Wide Open founder Steve Williams told him afterward that the song was “undeniable.” As Allen drove home, he got a call from BBR Music Group executive vp Jon Loba, who offered a recording deal.

Bowers and Eric Torres had previously produced six sides on Allen, and the day after the showcase, they were already set to cut six more titles at Ocean Way, where they showed the musicians the stripped-down Instagram video, encouraging them to keep “Best Shot” in spare form. Evan Hutchings used a cajon app to create an appropriately restrained percussion base, and Ilya Toshinsky and Justin Ostrander layered multiple guitars to help propel the song’s rhythm. Keyboard player David Dorn added an Omnisphere plug-in to create a bubble tone in the chorus, but all those parts were pulled way back to put Allen’s vocal in the forefront. And Allen nailed his part in just two takes.

“I got so wrapped up in that song emotionally, I forgot I was recording, and I forgot that other people were in the room,” says Allen.

Thus, his vocal carried an honest, unfabricated tone that matched the creative intent behind “Best Shot.”

“You can sing the life out of a song in the studio,” says Bowers. “Jimmie being such a great singer, on these types of songs it was super important for us to capture something that seemed very natural.”

Stoney Creek released “Best Shot” to radio via PlayMPE on Jan. 29. It’s currently at No. 48 on Country Airplay after five charted weeks.

“Jimmie is the one that really stuck by the song and the idea, and he’s the one who sort of championed it and said, ‘Man, we got to finish this one,’ ” says Williams. “I’m really happy he did.”

“Best Shot” is Allen’s introduction to the world at large, but it’s also a personal breakthrough, his best attempt at reaching a new level of honesty.

“Each opportunity we get [in life], we should use it to become better,” he says. “For me, on a deeper level, that’s what the song is about.”

Country Indicator

CHARTS LEGENDRANKINGSCountry Airplay is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 148 stations by Nielsen BDS. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2018, Arbitron Inc.) Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 106 stations, ranked by total plays.

BULLETSl Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored

station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week.

TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first.

RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they are not still

gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of (non-bulleted) audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks or if they post a third consecutive week of decline in plays after 10 weeks.

HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively.

MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds.

MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/PLAYSMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively.

AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.

BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE MARCH 19, 2018 | PAGE 19 OF 20

O n M a r c h 26 , 2 0 0 5 , C r a i g Morgan’s “That’s What I Love About Sunday” climbed 2-1 on Hot Country Songs for its first of four weeks on top. While “Sunday,” the first single from his album My Kind of Livin’, is Morgan’s lone leader on the chart, he boasts seven top 10s among 23 entries. His most recent, “Wake Up Lovin’ You,” hit No. 20 in 2014.

Morgan, 53, regularly records and tours. Having served over nine years in the U.S. Army, he frequently performs on USO tours and is a devoted fundraiser for military cha r it ies . He a ls o cha mpions Billy’s Place, a home for temporarily

displaced children that he launched in Dickson, Tenn., where he and his family reside. “It’s so important that we, as entertainers, give back to the community,” he told Billboard in 2012.

Morgan faced tragedy in 2016 when his 19-year-old son Jerr y was killed in a tubing accident on the Tennessee River. On March 1, Up T V launched Morgan Family Strong, a weekly reality show that chronicles the family’s loss and its new business, Morgan Farms, which sells such artisan products as hand-carved wooden home decorations and organic honey. —JIM ASKER
