owned by 45,000 shareholders and operated by 30,000 employes. P
rimarily, the G
reatN
orthern is a granger line and is a notable example of the pioneer railroad. Its
lineswere pushed across the prairies and over the m
ountains in advance of the population; itspurpose was to m
ake possible the occupancy of the country by a prosperous, contentedpeople; its ow
n success is founded upon the prosperity of its territory which, in turn,
depends upon good railroad service at low cost.
The first railroad in Minnesota was built in 1861 and is one of the lines which form
edthe nucleus of the present G
reat Northern System

the advent of the railroad hasresulted in an unparalleled grow
th of population and wealth in its territory is shown by
the following statistics, w
hich do not include the older settled states of Iowa and W
is-consin.
In 192.2 the Spring wheat crop of the United States was 270,000,000 bushels, of w
hichthe G
reat Northern handled 101,000,000 bushels or 37.4 per cent.

oted by extending and expanding the existing lines, just asthe pioneer settlem
ents were made possible by the building of the first railroads. T
he
Great N
orthern desires in every way to encourage and foster the prosperity and grow
thof its territory in the future as it has in the past. Its
managem
ent does not belittle theim
portance of adequate and cheap transportation in this country of vast distances, butasks that the railroads be perm
itted to produce transportation at the lowest possible
cost, so that good freight and passenger service may be provided w
hen needed and atthe lowest possible rates, and so that the railroads m
ay have the financial ability as well
as the desire to keep abreast of the requirements.
The Great N
orthern believes in private operation of the railroads, because privateoperation has produced the greatest and m
ost efficient transportation system in the
world. It recognizes that som
e Governm
ent regulation is necessary in the publicinterest, but believes that such regulation should be lim
ited to the enforcement of just
and equal rights and privileges to all shippers and should not be carried to the extreme
of hampering railroad m
anagement by depriving it of that discretion and initiative
which is essential to the conduct of any large industry. T
he
Transportation Act does
not prevent successful private operation if that law is so adm
inistered as to bring aboutthe results intended by it. C
essation from enactm
ent of further restrictive and inhibitorylaws and fair adm
inistration of existing laws constitute, at this tim
e, the most con-
structive public policy towards the railroads.
