X-caFé市內其中一家最具型格的消閒場所，位處的建築物原

是法國人於1919年建造的別墅，改建為時尚的咖啡館兼酒廊後，即成為潮流熱點。其裝潢突顯簡約主義的格

調，以玻璃、白牆和粗磚為設計主調。店內設有兩個露

天平台、一間電影室、一個雪糕廊；在開放式設計的一

樓，則擺放著人造麂皮沙發。在晚上，咖啡館內有樂隊

t he Saigonese love spending time in cafés. A legacy of French colonial rule, they are an inher-

ent and important part of the local cul-ture, sustained by a Vietnamese love affair with coffee and excellent domes-tic coffee bean production. Vietnam is the world’s biggest coffee exporter after Brazil.

Ho Chi Minh City’s cafés range from no-frills makeshift establishments to seriously hip hangouts. The newcom-ers that serve frosted coffee frappés haven’t yet upstaged the local favourites where ca phe sua da (iced milk coffee) is the drink of choice. Here are five favourite local haunts – all equipped with Wi-Fi access.

X-caFéOne of the city’s coolest coffee shops, this sprawling 1919 French-built villa comes bang up-to-date as a lounge-café-meeting place. The décor is minimalist with plenty of glass, white walls and bare brick work. There are two patios, a movie room, ice cream parlour-cum-bar and an open-plan first floor with faux suede sofas. In the evening it’s all about the music with live bands, DJs and large plasma screens that play DVDs. soho coFFee LouNgeSoho epitomises Ho Chi Minh City’s new generation of home-grown mod-ern cafés. This two-level urban café is hugely popular with the locals, ranging from teens to young corporate go-get-ters. The grey and glass-fronted build-ing has industrial-style, minimalist interiors, with black walls, grey floors and glass tables. The menu is very affordable, with hot or iced espressos from US$1.50 and Vietnamese coffees from US$1. But don’t come here look-ing for any peace and quiet. saigoN Xua va Nay Don’t expect anything flash at this low-key, barbecue restaurant-café. Simple wooden chairs and tables line the pave-ment of a leafy downtown street. This café serves arguably Ho Chi Minh City’s finest ca phe sua da – a wonder-ful blend of coffee and condensed milk with ice. For just US$1, it is a small price to pay for your caffeine fix. And if the outstanding coffee doesn’t tempt you, then maybe plates of barbecued goat, deer and beef will, washed down with tall mugs of cold beer. crêPerie & caFé restauraNtThis renovated villa has two floors of stylish interiors with library-style tranquillity – a perfect spot for Wi-Fi users. But the premier selling point is the atmospheric street-side ter-race with tables and chairs shaded by white-cotton umbrellas. The vantage point offers views across a leafy park to Reunification Palace and the rear of Notre Dame Cathedral. Crêperie & Café serves some of the best café lattes (US$3) and Irish coffees (US$3.50) in the city, and has an extensive Asian and international food menu. NaPoLyThis is an unashamedly Italian-style café, an indulgent throwback to 1950s Rome with an old-style ice-cream par-lour, Italian sodas and kitsch interiors of pink lampshades and tutti frutti-style wallpaper. The expansive, street-front terrace, which is shaded by umbrellas and palm trees, offers a convivial “dolce vita” ambience. It’s very popular, so be prepared to wait for a table. In the eve-ning it makes for a romantic setting.
