Ferroso viene de la palabra Ferrum quelosromanosempleabanparaelferroohierro.Porlotanto, losmaterialesferrosossonaquellosquecontienenhierrocomo suingredienteprincipal;esdecir,lasnumerosascalidadesdel hierro y el acero. Los materiales No Ferrosos no contienen hierro. Estosincluyenelaluminio,magnesio,zinc,cobre,plomoyotros elementosmetlicos.Lasaleacionescomoellatnyelbronce, son una combinacin de algunos de estos metales No Ferrosos y se les denomina Aleaciones No Ferrosas.Unodelosmaterialesdefabricacinyconstruccinmsverstil, msadaptableymsampliamenteusadoeselACERO.Aunprecio relativamentebajo,elacerocombinalaresistenciaylaposibilidad desertrabajado,porloqueseprestaparafabricacionesmediante muchos mtodos. Adems, sus propiedades pueden ser manejadas de acuerdo a las necesidades especifcas mediante tratamientos con calor, trabajo mecnico, o mediante aleaciones.GENERALIDADES SOBRE EL ACEROL16QU ES EL ACERO?El Acero es bsicamente una aleacin o combinacin de hierro y carbono (al-rededor de 0,05% hasta menos de un 2% de contenido de carbono). Algunas veces otros elementos de aleacin especfcos tales como el Cr (Cromo) o Ni (Nquel) se agregan con propsitos determinados.Ya que el acero es bsicamente hierro altamente refnado (ms de un 98%), su fabricacin comienza con la reduccin de hierro (produccin de arrabio) el cual se convierte ms tarde en acero.El hierro puro es uno de los elementos del acero, por lo tanto consiste sola-mente de un tipo de tomos. No se encuentra libre en la naturaleza ya que qumicamentereaccionaconfacilidadconeloxgenodelaireparaformar xidodehierro-herrumbre.Elxidoseencuentraencantidadessignifca-tivas en el mineral de hierro, el cual es una concentracin de xido de hierro con impurezas y materiales trreos.CLASIFICACIN DEL ACEROLos diferentes tipos de acero se clasifcan de acuerdo a los elementos de alea-cin que producen distintos efectos en el Acero : ACEROS AL CARBONOMs del 90% de todos los aceros son aceros al carbono. Estos aceros contie-nendiversascantidadesdecarbonoymenosdel1,65%demanganeso,el 0,60% de silicio y el 0,60% de cobre. Entre los productos fabricados con ace-ros al carbono fguran mquinas, carroceras de automvil, la mayor parte de las estructuras de construccin de acero y cascos de buques. ACEROS ALEADOSEstos aceros contienen un proporcin determinada de vanadio, molibdeno yotroselementos,ademsdecantidadesmayoresdemanganeso,silicio ycobrequelosacerosalcarbononormales.Estosacerosdealeacinse pueden subclasifcar en : 17>>>>> 1. ESTRUCTURALESSon aquellos aceros que se emplean para diversas partes de mquinas, tales como engranajes, ejes y palancas. Adems se utilizan en las estruc-turas de edifcios, construccin de chasis de automviles, puentes, barcos y semejantes. El contenido de la aleacin vara desde 0,25% a un 6%.>>>>> 2. PARA HERRAMIENTASAceros de alta calidad que se emplean en herramientas para cortar y mo-delar metales y no-metales. Por lo tanto, son materiales empleados para cortar y construir herramientas tales como taladros y fresas.>>>>> 3. ESPECIALESLos Aceros de Aleacin especiales son los aceros inoxidables y aquellos con un contenido de cromo generalmente superior al 12%. Estos aceros de gran dureza y alta resistencia a las altas temperaturas y a la corrosin, seempleanenturbinasdevapor,engranajes,ejesyrodamientos.Los acerosinoxidablescontienencromo,nquelyotroselementosdealea-cin, que los mantienen brillantes y resistentes a la herrumbre y oxida-cin a pesar de la accin de la humedad o de cidos y gases corrosivos.Algunos aceros inoxidables son muy duros; otros son muy resistentes y mantienen esa resistencia durante largos periodos a temperaturas ex-tremas. Debido a sus superfcies brillantes, en arquitectura se emplean muchas veces con fnes decorativos. El acero inoxidable se utiliza para lastuberasytanquesderefnerasdepetrleooplantasqumicas, paralosfuselajesdelosavionesoparacpsulasespaciales.Tambin seusaparafabricarinstrumentosyequiposquirrgicos,oparafjar osustituirhuesosrotos,yaqueresistealaaccindelosfuidoscor-porales. En cocinas y zonas de preparacin de alimentos los utensilios son a menudo de acero inoxidable, ya que no oscurece los alimentos y pueden limpiarse con facilidad.1.2.3.GENERALIDADES SOBRE MATERIALES18 ACEROS DE BAJA ALEACION ULTRARRESISTENTESEsta familia es la ms reciente de las tres grandes clases de acero. Los aceros de baja aleacin son ms baratos que los aceros aleados convencionales ya que contienen cantidades menores de los costosos elementos de aleacin. Sin embargo, reciben un tratamiento especial que les da una resistencia mucho mayor que la del acero al carbono. Por ejemplo, los vagones de mercancas fabricados con aceros de baja aleacin pueden transportar cargas ms gran-des porque sus paredes son ms delgadas que lo que sera necesario en caso deemplearaceroalcarbono.Adems,comolosvagonesdeacerodebaja aleacin pesan menos, las cargas pueden ser ms pesadas. En la actualidad seconstruyenmuchosedifciosconestructurasdeacerosdebajaaleacin. Las vigas pueden ser ms delgadas sin disminuir su resistencia, logrando un mayor espacio interior en los edifcios.VENTAJAS Y PROPIEDADES DEL ACERO COMO MATERIAL ESTRUCTURAL Algunas propiedades mecnicas del acero y sus ventajas como elemento es-tructural Alta resistencia: laaltaresistenciadelaceroporunidaddepeso,permite estructuras relativamente livianas, lo cual es de gran importancia en la construc-cin de puentes, edifcios altos y estructuras cimentadas en suelos blandos. Homogeneidad: las propiedades del acero no se alteran con el tiempo, ni varan con la localizacin en los elementos estructurales. Elasticidad:el acero es el material que ms se acerca a un comportamiento linealmente elstico (Ley de Hooke) hasta alcanzar esfuerzos considerables. Precisindimensional:los perfles laminados estn fabricados bajo estndares que permiten establecer de manera muy precisa las propieda-des geomtricas de la seccin. Ductilidad: elaceropermitesoportargrandesdeformacionessinfa-lla, alcanzando altos esfuerzos en tensin, ayudando a que las fallas sean evidentes. Es la capacidad de un material para deformarse plsticamente antes de fracturarse.19 Alargamiento (elongacin): Eselincrementoenlalongitudentre marcas de un cuerpo sometido a una fuerza de traccin, con referencia a unalongitudentremarcasenelcuerpo.Elalargamiento(elongacin)se suele expresar como un porcentaje de la longitud entre marcas original. Estriccin: Eslareduccinderealocalizadadelaseccintransversal de una probeta, lo cual puede ocurrir durante el estiramiento. Resistenciaalacompresin: Es el mximo esfuerzo de compresin que un material puede resistir. La resistencia a la compresin se calcula a partir de la carga mxima durante un ensayo de compresin y el rea de seccin transversal original de la probeta. Resistenciaalafuencia:Es el esfuerzo de ingeniera en el cual, por convencin,seconsideraqueelalargamiento(elongacin)plsticodel material ha comenzado. Resistenciaalatraccin:Es el mximo esfuerzo de tensin que un material puede resistir. La resistencia de traccin se calcula a partir de la carga mxima durante un ensayo de traccin efectuado hasta la rotura y el rea de la seccin transversal original de la probeta Tenacidad:el acero tiene la capacidad de absorber grandes cantidades de energa en deformacin (elstica e inelstica). Facilidad de unin con otros miembros: elaceroenperflesse puede conectar fcilmente a travs de remaches, tornillos o soldadura con otros perfles. Rapidez de montaje:lavelocidaddeconstruccinenaceroesmuy superior al resto de los materiales. Disponibilidaddeseccionesytamaos:el acero se encuentra dispo-nible en perfles para optimizar su uso en gran cantidad de tamaos y formas. Costoderecuperacin:las estructuras de acero de desecho, tienen un costo de recuperacin en el peor de los casos como chatarra de acero. Reciclable:el acero es un material 100 % reciclable adems de ser de-gradable por lo que no contamina. Permite ampliaciones fcilmente: elaceropermitemodifcacio-nes y/o ampliaciones en proyectos de manera relativamente sencilla. Se pueden prefabricar estructuras: elaceropermiterealizarla mayor parte posible de una estructura en taller y la mnima en obra consi-guiendo mayor exactitud. GENERALIDADES SOBRE MATERIALES20NORMAS PARA LA FABRICACIN DE ACEROSDiferentesagrupacioneseinstitutossehanpreocupadoporreglamentarla fabricacin de acero, por esto todos los aceros deben acogerse a una normati-vidad para su fabricacin. A continuacin presentamos algunas de estas insti-tuciones con su respectiva sigla, que es con la que se identifca generalmente cada estndar:Asociacin Sigla 1 American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM2 Comit de Registro Naval LLoyd LLOYD3 Bufete Naval Americano ABS4 American Petroleum Institute API5 Society of Automotive Engineers SAE6 American Iron and Steel Institute AISI7 American Institute of steel construction AISC8 Estndar Britnico BS9 American Society of Mechanical Engineers ASME10 American National Standards Institute ANSI11 Japanese Industrial Standard JIS12 Deutsches Institut fr Normung DIN13Instituto Colombiano de Normas Tcnicas y CertifcacinICONTEC14 International Standard Organization ISOEn nuestro pas, el Instituto Colombiano de Normas Tcnicas y Certifcacin (IN-CONTEC), es el nico organismo nacional de normalizacin reconocido estatal-mente. El INCONTEC ha promulgado la Normas Tcnicas Colombianas, conoci-das como Normas NTC; sin embargo las normas NTC aceptan la compatibilidad de las normas ASTM o de otra institucin. Cabe aclarar que esta compatibilidad sehacenicamentecomoreferencia,ylanormaobligatoriasiempreserla norma NTC, y no necesariamente corresponde a la norma de antecedente de la norma NTC. En aquellos casos en los cuales no exista una norma NTC se acepta la utilizacin de normas ASTM o de otras instituciones (NSR-98). 21GENERALIDADES SOBRE MATERIALESLa normatividad es importante dentro del contenido actual de la Constitucin Nacional de Colombia, ya que consagra en el Estado el papel de salvaguardar la vida, honra y propiedad de sus ciudadanos, a travs del instrumento de la reglamentacin y cumplimiento de los requisitos mnimos de comportamien-to de los materiales de ingeniera y de construccin, entregndole un escena-rio de importancia y justifcacin a la ciencia y a la tecnologa (NSR-98). Desdelosaos70surgilainquietudacercadelascondicionestcnicasde losmaterialesparaconstruccionesdentrodelmarcolegal,partiendodelas experiencias y avances en otros pases, lideres en el uso de especifcaciones y normas. Tras la tragedia de Popayn (Cauca) se estableci la Ley 11 de 1983, que autoriz la emisin de una reglamentacin que cubriera todo el territorio nacional, adoptndose en 1984 el Cdigo Colombiano de Construcciones Sis-morresistentes a travs del Decreto 1400 del 7 de junio, denominado y cono-cido gremialmente como CCCSR-84 (CCCSR-84, NSR-98). El 19 de agosto de 1997 se promulga la Ley 400, con el fn de actualizar en el futuro las normas mediante decretos reglamentarios. Mediante Decreto 33 del 9 de enero de 1998, se promulg el Gobierno Nacional a travs de una nueva normatividad constituida en las Normas Colombianas de Diseo y Construc-cinSismo-Resistente,denominadasyconocidascomoNSR-98.Estanorma est basada principalmente en lo correspondiente a especifcaciones de ma-teriales de ingeniera y para construccin, en las normas NTC (NSR-98). En nuestro medio, las normas internacionales de mayor uso son las promulga-das por la American Standard for Testing and Materials (ASTM) y las promulga-das por la Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) que fueron luego adoptadas y difundidas por la American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) por lo que reciben la denominacin de AISI-SAE, veamos:22Fue fundado el 16 de junio de 1898, como Ame-ricanSectionoftheInternationalAssociation forTestingMaterialsporiniciativadeCharles Dudley,entoncesresponsabledel(diramos hoy) Control Calidad de Pennsylvanya Railroad, quintuvolainiciativadehacerqueloshasta entoncesrivalesferrocarrilesylasfundiciones de acero coordinaran sus controles de calidad.AlgunosaosantessehabafundadolaIn-ternationalAssociationforTestingMaterials (IATM), y justamente el 16 de junio del 1898 los setentamiembrosdelaIATMsereunieronen Philadelphiaparafundarlaseccinamericana de la organizacin.En 1902, la seccin americana se constituye como organizacin autnoma con el nombre de: American Society for Testing Materials, que se volver universalmente conocida en el mundo tcnico como ASTM. Dudley fue, naturalmente, el primer presidente de la ASTM.El campo de accin de la ASTM se fue ampliando en el tiempo, pasando a tratar no solo de los materiales ferroviarios, sino todos los tipos de materia-les, abarcando un espectro muy amplio, comprendiendo los revestimientos y los mismos procesos de tratamiento.El desarrollo de la normatizacin en los aos 1923 al 1930 llev a un gran desarrollo de la ASTM (de la cual por ejemplo Henry Ford fue miembro). El campo de aplicacin se ampli, y en el curso de la segunda guerra mundial laASTMtuvounrolimportanteenladefnicindelosmateriales,consi-guiendoconciliarlasdifcultadesblicasconlasexigenciasdecalidadde laproduccinenmasa.Eraporlotantonaturalunciertoreconocimiento de esta expansin y en 1961 ASTM fue redefnida como American Society for Testing and Materials, habiendo sido ampliado tambin su objetivo.
