◆江戸提灯持ち運びができる明りとして提灯が普及したのは江戸時代。和紙を貼った提灯の火袋に独自の文字を書き入れます。In Japan, paper lanterns came to be a common portable light during the Edo period. The characters in unique calligraphic style are painted on washi (Japanese paper) which wraps over the frame.

作家から一言Comment from the craftsman

江戸文字は文字の隙間を少なくし、右上がりに書きます。商い（空き無い）が右肩上がりという縁起を担いでいます。

Edo moji are written with a slight upward slant to the right and very little gap between each of the characters. This writing style is an auspicious visual play that was popular at the time to wish for a 'prosperous business with hardly a lull'.

江戸文字だけでなく色々なデザインを取り入れた作品があります。和紙だけでなくビニールを張った製品もあります。今は絵文字を印刷して貼る方法もありますが、手描きで手間をかけた提灯の味のある仕上がりにはかないません。My lanterns come in various designs including Edo moji (Edo style characters) and some are made of plastic. Although characters and pictures can be printed today, those printed cannot match to hand-painted lantern for its tasteful finish with individual feel.
