I see the SIG funds as an asset. We have been entrusted with a significant amount of funding and, as a result, much is expected. The Federal Government expects schools to use these funds to further the vision you have for your school. Dr. Bice expects innovation from SIG schools. The SDE expects schools to maximize the AlaStar tool to document progress toward your vision. School and district administrators expect their students to succeed. Expectations are common. Here are some expectations of the SIG program.

This year, I am asking for all indicators to be reassessed, whether they were initially marked as fully implemented or not. Students, staff, administrators may have changed over the past year or more, and it is imperative to check progress regularly against these best practices. All means all (example: “All teachers” means every teacher performs an action); fully implemented means everyone has done an action (documented by evidence) AlaStar documentation must be current (meeting dates, agendas, minutes, etc.) – entries will be checked on a monthly basis Allocate time for the process manager to update AlaStar during the school day. The designated person should not be the principal, because of the myriad responsibilities already assumed.

With regard to stating “all means all”, for example, that would mean that for D11 “All teachers maximize the time available for instruction.” The Wise Ways provides leaders with support with regard to this indicator. Feel free to list this indicator as fully implemented if the conditions listed in Wise Ways are met, as seen on the next slide.

Indistar® is premised on the firm belief that district and school improvement is best accomplished when directed by the people closest to the students. Wise Ways are a collection of strategies designed to support the effective implementation of the research-based indicators.
