Two atoms were walking down the street one day, when one of them exclaimed, 'Oh no - I've lost an electron!' 'Are you sure?' the other one asked. ‘Yes,’ replied the first one, 'I'm positive.'

Bench TipsEmery BoardsThe sanding boards fordoingyournails areoneofmyfavorite finishing tools. I usethe ones with a thin foamcore. They have enoughresistance to sand just thehigh points off a flat surfaceand yet give a little whenyou're trying to smooth off acurved surface.Plus they're inexpensive andcome inavarietyofgrits. Somegrits are so fine they give an almost finished surface. Pick upa few at a beauty supply company or at your local drug store.

Dental FlossWhen testing the fit of a stone in the bezel, it's all too easy toget it stuck. If tapping the finding or opening up the bezel a bitwith a knife blade doesn't dislodge it, you might have to drilla small hole in the bottom and push it out with a needle.Toavoidall this frustration, use theolddental floss trick.Laya piece of floss over the top of the bezel before you seat thestone. Then just pull on the string to remove the stone.

LapidaryArts

A lapidary is an artist or artisanwho forms stone, minerals, orgemstones into decorative itemssuch as cabochons, engraved gems, and faceted designs. A lapidaristuses the lapidary techniques ofcutting, grinding, and polishing.Hardstone carving requiresspecialized carving techniques.Thereare threebroadcategoriesoflapidary arts: tumbling, cabochoncutting and faceting. Most modernlapidary work is done usingmotorized equipment. Polishing isdone with resin- or metal-bondedsilicon carbide (carborundum),aluminumoxide (corundum), emery, ordiamonddust in successivelydecreasingparticle sizesuntil a polish is achieved. Often, the final polish will usea different medium such as tin oxide or cerium oxid.

Cutting of harder stones isdone with a diamond-edgedsaw. For softer materials, amedium other than diamondscan be used, such as siliconcarbide, garnet, emery, or corundum. Diamond cuttingrequires the use of diamond tools because of the extremehardness of diamonds. The cutting, grinding, andpolishing operations are usually lubricated with water, oil, or other liquids. Beyond these broader categories, there are other specialized forms of lapidary techniques, such as casting, carving, jewelry, and mosaics. The specialty of micro mosaics, which developed in the late-18thcentury in Naples and Rome, issometimes covered under theumbrella term of lapidary work. Inthis technique, minute slivers ofglass are assembled to create images. In China, lapidary workspecializing in jade carving has beencontinuous since at least the ShangDynasty.

Hello Glass FriendsSummer is here, and it’s time to have some fun in the glass area! We have two new classes on the schedule.Tiny Bubbles is an Intermediate fused glass project that’s sure to please. And, we’ll have a champagne toast atthe completion of the class. Next is Stained Glass Stepping Stone, and we all need one of those in our yard socome on out and make one. Also, don’t forget that the fourth Sunday of the month is PIZZA and time with your friends at the shop. Seethe schedule for times of everything.Hope to see you there! Tina Moore, VP of Glass

Things to Think About When MakingTricky Stained Glass Cuts

5 Always score and break the LARGEST inside curve on your piece first,

then score and break the other sides.

5Glass wants to break in a straight line. If you score and break your inside

curves last, therewill be less glass available to “support” the curve andhelp keep

it from breaking in the middle of the curve.

5When cutting a long, thin piece, cut it twice as wide as you need it, then

score and break the middle.

5 To prevent breaking the tip of a thin point, cut the piece twice as wide

as you need it, then score and break it down the middle.

5Don’t forget the grinder. You can do some

final shaping of your glass with the grinder. Just

remember to use a light touch, especially on thin

or narrow pieces so you don’t snap them in half.

Gentle pressure on the grinder is all that is

needed– let the grinder do the work.

5 Patience and practice are your friends. Practice cutting inside curves

on a scrap piece of glass before you cut into your project glass. Think of it

aswarming up. You can even get some clear scrap glass from a home supply

store or your supplier and practice a little every day. You will be surprised

how quickly your cutting skills improve.
