BAFTA’s prestigious premises on London’s Piccadilly will play
host to this year’s TVBEurope 2020 conference, the second
annual one-day strategy summit hosted by TVBEurope. The
centrepiece of TVBEurope Strategy Week, TVBEurope 2020 brings
together some of the leading authorities from in and around the
industry to provide unique analysis and instructive debate on the
key areas of challenge and opportunity facing businesses in the
media and entertainment space in the run up to 2020.
Joining the dots between the convergent worlds of UHD and IT/
IP infrastructures; assessing the shifting business landscape for
broadcasters and content providers; and dissecting the impact
of the coming technologies of the connected world, this year’s
agenda promises to be the most forward looking TVBEurope
event to date.
Last year’s delegate list included senior representatives from the
BBC, ITV, Netfl ix, Sky, ITN, Rovi, BT Sport, Channel 4, Viacom, CNBC
Europe, Al Jazeera, Fox International, NBC Universal, Discovery,

Glensound
Stand: E30
By Philip Stevens
Engineer Len Davis left the BBC in 1966 and set up his own company, Glensound Services. Fifty years later, it is known as Glensound.
For many commentators, ‘the Glensound’ is the generic term for the box into which they plug headphones and microphones. For voiceover artists, or an engineer that grew up in the era of ISDN, Glensound is the box that connects to the outside world. And if you are the prime minister, Glensound is the company that mixes and distributes your speech to world
broadcasters. The first Glensound branded design – a distribution amplifier – was created in 1969 for Prince Charles’ Investiture. Innovation continued as Glensound invented the world’s first unitised mixer in 1971 and the first assignable mixer in 1980.
Four years later, the BBC needed a different way to handle commentary for the Commonwealth Games in Scotland. A commentary solution was suggested that separated the commentary box from the audio I/O interface and connected them via a single coaxial cable that carried power and multi-channel audio. The two-part commentary unit was born.
In 1994 a relationship with the UK parliament began that would see Glensound develop systems for managing microphone
mixing, feedback control, audio distribution, and further intelligent systems as part of the Commons, Lords and the Committee Rooms.
Len Davis semi-retired in 2005 and his son, Gavin Davis, who had been with the company since 1986, took over as managing director; a role that continues today. “Glensound is so fondly remembered by so many engineers, and by me too as I grew up alongside it,” says Gavin Davis.
“We remain a specialist solutions provider with simple, solid designs which innovate. I take the responsibility for the reputation Glensound has with broadcasters very seriously, and I certainly aim to make sure the products designed now will still be thought of fondly over the next 50 years.”
Ross Video
Stand: N10
By Philip Stevens
Built on the XPression Real-Time Motion Graphics System with an intuitive purpose-built interface, the Ross Trackless Studio brings virtual sets to even the most basic productions.
“Using stationary cameras, virtual camera moves, and the same high-quality virtual sets as tracked implementations, Trackless Studio provides incredible results while staying on budget,” explains Stuart Russell, Ross Video’s marketing manager for EMEA.
“Budgets and studio real estate often necessitate
a different approach to production, and this system opens up new opportunities
for virtual sets.” Trackless Studio uses stationary physical cameras instead of robotic
camera systems, encoded camera heads/lenses, or optical tracking hardware.
All camera moves are done virtually inside of the XPression scene, eliminating the need for a large studio space. “It utilises an internal Chroma Keyer, based on algorithms from Ross UltraChrome, to create real 3D virtual sets with full 3D motion capabilities,” reveals Russell. “That means a director can call for dramatic camera moves that would otherwise require the use of a crane or a jib, something not possible in many small to medium size studios. All of this is controlled from touchscreens, Ross switchers or Dashboard, optional cross keys, a keyboard or a web server.”
At present, there are six stock virtual sets on offer, although plans call for further options to be available in the near future.
