EPHJ-EPMT-SMT

The savoir-faire of Swiss watchmakers has a long history of inspiring the world of high-precision manufacturing. The EPHJ-EPMT-SMT Trade Show creates important synergies between precision technology and microtechnology in watchmaking, jewellery-making and medical technology. Featuring more than 800 exhibitors from around 20 different countries, some 20,000 industry visitors from all over the world are expected to attend this year's event.

The age of measuring systems Kistler used to supply the individual sensors with the appropriate charge amplifier, but today the market demands comprehensive measurement systems of a dynamic, static or optical nature. The capability of these systems goes far beyond measurement: They connect, monitor, control, document and analyse. In addition to the electronics, special analysis software developed in-house is also supplied. In the area of vehicle safety, the full range of equipment is also supplied, from crash test dummy and wall to built-in sensors. Complete solutions are often supplied, adapted individually to the customer's needs. In recent years, the range of applications for these solutions has expanded far beyond vehicle technology. New application fields are opening up all the time, such as WIM (weigh-in-motion) systems, which collect and process traffic data, or force plates for biomechanical analysis in sport, medicine and science.

Kistler – sensor systems designed for innovation

Whether for recording thermo-acoustic phe-nomena in gas turbines, monitoring combus-tion processes in Formula 1 or controlling and monitoring industrial production plants: When conventional measurement technology reaches its limitations, choose Kistler. Using measurement with crystals (piezoelectric measurement technology) and silicon crystals (piezoresistive measuring technology), the Winterthur-based sensor and systems provid-er offers a wide range of high-end measuring systems for the analysis of physical processes in a variety of applications. In the age of digital product development, data is increasingly available to developers, researchers and engineers to identify poten-tial for improvement. That's why Kistler main-tains the absolute highest standards of quali-ty when it comes to communicating such information. This benefits users when faced with day-to-day challenges and creates impor-tant competitive advantages. The delicate and highly sensitive sensors are used wherever force, pressure, acceleration or torque are measured.

Highly accurate measurements provide the advantage

Special sensor systems have a wide range of appli-cations, starting with manufacturing and assembly processes that are optimised through highly accu-rate measurements. For example, combined pres-sure and temperature sensors monitor the manu-facturing processes for fibre-reinforced plastics, and dynamometers measure the prevailing forces in cutting tools. Another example are tool internal pressure sensors, which improve process reliability in injection moulding systems. Intelligent measur-ing systems thus enable self-regulating production processes to be established. Sensors from Kistler are robust and can be installed in engine combustion chambers or gas turbines. Due to their high temperature resistance, “high-temperature measurement chains” provide reliable data in gas turbines even in the glowing state (up to 700°C). It is these applications that en-sure engines emit fewer pollutants – and make the age of sensors so fascinating.

ToolBoxes: A solid foundation

Internal measurement, such as in the field of intralogistics, clearly is another area in which Kistler is highly involved: To minimise setup times, achieve better utilisation of production equipment and improve the reproducibility of processes, the Winterthur-based company installed the first ToolBoxes from Brütsch/Rüegger Tools with the test equipment planning module around four years ago. The production department and training workshop now operate a total of 14 centralised ToolBoxes. As digital images are taken of all equipment, it is not just their metadata that can be accessed at the touch of a button. The process of finding and procuring articles has also been simplified and ordering procedures have been automated. Sebastian Braun from the tool department explains: "Quality assurance is our top priority, and the ToolBox systems make an important contribution in this regard". He adds that these standardised systems could also provide a basis for exchanging data with other sites in the future. This lays the foundation for the smart factory!

For the best driving dynamics and maximum safety: Kistler supplies highly specialised solutions for vehicle development.

"KiSprint" system: Athletes are also improving their performance thanks to sensors from Kistler.

WIM (weigh-in-motion) system for demanding measurements on roads.

Industrial process control: Sensor system integrated into tools measures cutting force.

The ToolBoxes have helped Kistler reduce its range to 10,000 articles.

The Kistler Group is headquartered in Winterthur.

Measurement technology and sensors

60 years of expertiseAs young engineers at the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works (SLM), Walter Kistler and Hans Sonderegger tinkered with engines and measuring systems. In 1950, Walter Kistler invented the charge amplifier (charge voltage converter) and helped achieve a breakthrough for piezoelectric measurement technology. Hans Sonderegger founded Kistler Instrumente AG in 1959 . The "PiezoStar" crystals that are needed in the piezoelectric sensors—still the company's most important type of measurement technology—are grown in Winterthur. The product range includes piezoresistive sensors, strain gauges and capacitive acceleration sensors through to optical sensors. Some 70 percent of customers come from the automotive industry. The family-run Kistler Group employs over 2200 employees worldwide, including around 670 in Winterthur. It operates additional production sites in Germany and the USA.

Intralogistics 4.0 takes care of it allWhy is this order delayed? Why are these parts still sitting by this machine? These everyday situations will be familiar to you. And it's no wonder, because it is extremely difficult to coordinate projects in par-allel while avoiding downtimes. In simple terms, the one-time idea behind Industry 4.0 was that of an open data standard. Simple com-parison with the smartphone illustrates the lack of progress at the implementation stage: Just being able to count the number of operating systems on one hand means a huge range of systems in the in-dustry.Although it may be possible to read all data today in one way, the issue of interpretation remains elusive. The trick is to see the right trees in the digital wood. The only way to prevent data chaos is through intel-ligent information management. This is also true for small companies, not necessarily generating less data, relatively speaking, than large ones. But what does this mean for the shop floor? Intelli-gent and efficient tool management is no longer an insular process. It is strongly connected with the use of equipment and personnel resources. This is exact-ly where the versatile ToolBox solution from neutral service partner Brütsch/Rüegger Tools comes in.

Much more than vending machines

Log in, search for a tool, then select and remove it: Whether in the Basic, Slim or Largo version, the drawer and pull-out cabinets, lift systems, vending machines and carousel systems offer impressively simple and efficient operation. Brütsch/Rüegger Tools adapts the user interface, access rights and degree of connectivity to the ERP system depending on the customer's requirements. This includes the inner partition material in the form of trays for cutting tools, insert boxes made of plastic, partition walls made of sheet metal or foam inserts for measuring equipment. The ToolBox systems can be combined and expanded as necessary. They quickly pay for themselves and are the perfect introduction to the gradual process of networking towards the modern Smart Factory.

Robust, fast and suitable for multiple suppliers: The ToolBox systems are designed to meet precise individual requirements.

Laubscher Präzision AG uses more than ten decentralised ToolBoxes with Kardex connection.

Personnel management on the assembly lines: Willemin-Macodel SA puts its trust in Jellix.

Tectri SA has installed a complete range of ToolBoxes and modules for shop-floor and quality management.

At Biral AG, the lift is fully integrated into the ToolBox systems.

Industrial Solutions

Let us take you to the next level!

Brütsch/Rüegger Tools founded the Industrial Solutions department back in 2010. Now the largest team in the Solutions & Consulting area, it has a comprehensive knowledge of all processes and tasks in production and assembly. In addition to practical experience in the field of production, the specialists well-versed in IoT have a strong IT background. Experi-ence drawn from a wide range of imple-mented projects is incorporated into this internationally focused division with a presence in Switzerland, Germany and China. Through pre-analysis, implementa-tion, project planning, and service or consulting services, the agile team supplies perfectly tailored solutions and safeguards the user's commercial success. Contact our experts at: [email protected].

Productivity and transparency

The ToolBoxes offer a range of benefits: They reduce consumption, tool type diversity and stock value while minimising administrative costs thanks to the integrated ordering system. In addition to permanent availability, another important factor is traceability, which creates transparency from shop floor to top floor! A centralised data pool gives all business areas and production systems real-time access to tool data and production data. A clear overview of the data can be accessed on any end device via the Jellix module (the open IoT platform from Brütsch/Rüegger Tools). Each individual user decides what information to store in their own infrastructure or in an externally accessible cloud.

New tool management software

Based on our ten years of experience, we have developed a brand new piece of tool management software especially for use in Swiss SMEs. The intuitive "Inventory", for example, offers optimal measuring equipment management and can be extended to other Jellix modules (and here's some more good news: The conventional software is still supported).Experience shows that these solutions have proven their worth in the field of equipment management: Although it can be configured to meet individual requirements, most customers use the standard interface. Learn more about this solution, which is compatible with all common industrial systems, and contact us at: [email protected] or on +41 44 736 63 63.

Networking and quality in focus

Brütsch/Rüegger Tools will showcase its latest achievements in the field of CNC machine net-working at the EPHJ-EPMT-SMT Trade Show. As just one example, the Industrial Solutions team will present a brand new tool management mod-ule. Another new module for "Quality Control" developed in partnership with Sylvac SA will also be on show.

Visit us from 18 to 21 June at the Palexpo convention centre in Geneva at Stand E47!
