Looking for LightThe winter season has weighed in, albeit a mild one, the ever-present clouds driven by our great lakes persist; dark days make it hard to see the light that will soon grace our little corner of the globe. Our area really does represent a unique gardening ecosystem and it’s chuck full of meteorological surprises! We have plenty of dormancy for the sleep-needing plants but a long enough growing season to produce plenty of beauties. I think that our microclimate here says a lot about our community as a whole: Resilience is built right into our DNA!

A good way to be “one-up” on our finicky weather is to consider gardening with natives, and the American Beauties collection is just the ticket to get you there. Let’s not get into the nitpicky debates on true natives right now—let’s just focus on the positive aspects of plants that are happy as clams existing in our zone. Pick your season and WNY has a flower for you! And we will be offering it…just look for the American Beauties sign at the nursery yard and you are on your way to an easier garden full of color, plenty of pollen, and good adaptation.

The desire for natives and pollinators is a new driving force this season in our little village—the public garden spaces in Brockport are transitioning! Goals for 2019 are to be in tune with environmental needs (and constraints as some may feel) while maintaining an aesthetic that continually inspires. We invite you to come visit and see what might speak to you for your gardens!

Stone Wall Follies 2019Oh, the woes of uncertainty…must I go on? We have a potential new teacher for the follies…he is wonderful! The Instagram video proves it! The thing is, can we convince him that coming to the nursery for what really amounts to 4 days is worth his time? If you have hesitated on the last 10 years, then this year could be more than just your slot on an unbelievable team of new wallers, this could be your chance to keep the follies moving forward. Email me and I will elaborate on the wee bit of magic that happens each year…we have 4 folks already, but we need 8 more!

Just because we love John, we are encouraging the following of his blog and idk, Google his name to catch his Instagram, his twitter...if you love stone you will want to do this.

Please check out John’s blog—an inspirational read: thinking-stoneman.blogspot.com

I'm rounding out the first year in my new garden, and it looks terrible. Actually, as I write this it's blanketed in snow, so it looks ok. But in general—awful. There are a lot of weedy roses of Sharon, and I can't decide if I want to try to "make my peace" with them or to go with my first instinct, total irradication.

Obviously I have no such qualms about the abundant swallowwort, and I also have no idea how to get rid of it.

The first winter in my last [real] garden, I noticed the postman's tracks in the snow and decided to build paths

there (since he clearly was going to walk that way regardless, and it felt polite). It was probably the best design decision I made in that front yard. It was definitely a better decision than planting dwarf Alberta spruce and other supposedly diminutive evergreens.

That garden produced many happy accidents, however. Certain plants self-sowed with exuberance: 'Confetti' hardy geranium; pulmonaria; beautiful, dark-purple spurge; hellebore; corydalis, European wild ginger, Digitalis lutea...the list goes on. (And out back, it's a totally different list.)

I dug up a lot of those plants—the offspring—and planted them in the new garden this summer. Most of them won't survive, and there are several I'll probably try again. But there are some things I'll try and try again that will simply never take in this new space, so close to the old one and yet so different. I could never grow dogwoods or gaura in the limey, loamy, typically "Honeoye" soil of Caledonia, but I bet I'll have no trouble with them in the new stuff (city east), which appears to be close to pure sand.

So I'll take the advice I've given coutless others over the past twenty-odd years—when planning a new garden, walk around the neighboorhood and see what is efortlessly thriving in your neighbors' plots.

And don't forget about the postal carrier!
