Lenni-Lenape Indians were the first to inhabit the region. European settlement
began in the late 17th
century in Bucks County outside Philadelphia and spread
north. Industrial growth got underway in earnest with the discovery and mining of
anthracite coal in Carbon County and the Wyoming Valley in the early 1800s and the
subsequent development of reliable transportation that carried the coal to growing
markets in the Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia and New York. Foremost among the
transportation systems were the Lehigh and Delaware canals and the Lehigh Valley
Railroad. These engineering marvels opened the region to industrial development
and financial growth and spurred the founding of hundreds of communities that
give the D&L its distinctive character.
H I S T O R Y
Sturdy teams of mules once walked this towpath, pulling boats with up to
100 tons of coal and other cargo. Residents in these Delaware Canal towns of
New Hope, Yardley, Morrisville and Bristol formed Landmark Towns of Bucks
County to celebrate and promote that heritage – www.landmarktowns.com.
Yardley and its
200-structure
historic district
is an appealing
destination; a
convenient SEPTA
train station makes
Yardley easily
accessible to visitors
from Philadelphia. Heading south, Morrisville,
named for Robert Morris, the “Financier of
the American Revolution,” is located at the
tidal falls of the Delaware River, across from
Trenton, New Jersey. This is another stretch
of the D&L Trail where state-to-state loop
routes are possible using New Jersey’s
Delaware & Raritan Canal Trail.

Philadelphia. Today, the D&L Trail connects people to nature, culture, communities,
recreation and our industrial heritage.”
What is a National Heritage Area?
the United States Congress for its unique qualities and resources.
It is a place where a combination of natural, cultural, historic and
recreational resources has shaped a cohesive, nationally distinctive
landscape. The Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, one
of 49, received this designation in 1988 – the third in the nation.

Pennsbury Manor
The D&L Trail follows the canal inland as it winds toward the navigable
tidewaters of the Delaware River. When built, the canal was a 40-foot
wide, five-foot deep ditch dug by man and animals using simple plows
and tools. Although the canal and towpath have been transformed by
time, efforts are underway to clear obstacles. Check the D&L online
map for the latest updates at www.delawareandlehigh.org. One of
America’s oldest settlements – Bristol Borough – is at the trail’s
southern terminus. Bristol offers waterfront views of the Delaware
River, ethnic festivals, theater, and a traditional downtown. Silver
Lake Park and Nature Center and William Penn’s summer home,
Pennsbury Manor, are nearby. Using the East Coast Greenway you
can continue to Philadelphia.

The D&L Trail runs through Delaware
Canal State Park for 59 miles from
Easton to Bristol along the Delaware
River and Delaware Canal towpath. A
multi-use hike and bike path, the trail
winds through low hills and pastoral
valleys. Private and public land border
the park. Riegelsville and other small
towns along the river prospered when
the Delaware Canal opened in 1832.
Durham Furnace in Upper Bucks
County smelted locally mined iron ore before the Revolutionary
War and continued operating into the 1900s. The PA Highlands
Trail joins the D&L Trail
near Upper Black Eddy and
connects to Ringing Rocks
County Park. Delaware Canal
State Park headquarters is
in Upper Black Eddy

The Corridor
The Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, one of 49
significant landscape of scenic waterways, forested mountains,
rolling hills and valleys, thriving cities and picturesque towns,
cultural landmarks, and the remnants of historic canals and early
industries. The D&L Corridor was established to preserve the
historic pathway that carried coal and iron from Wilkes-Barre to
Philadelphia. Stretching 165 miles from northeast Pennsylvania to
the Delaware River port of Bristol, near Philadelphia, the D&L Trail
Carbon, Lehigh, Northampton and Bucks.
The Trail
The D&L Trail is a 165-mile multi-use path that follows the routes
of three historic transportation systems between Wilkes-Barre and
Bristol, Pennsylvania: the Lehigh and Delaware canals and the
Lehigh Valley Railroad. These systems were responsible for
the transportation of anthracite coal from mines in the
industries and homes in eastern Pennsylvania and
beyond. The abundance of coal and other natural
resources, coupled with an efficient means of
transporting them, spurred unprecedented
industrial growth in the region and
enabled it to become a birthplace of
the American Industrial Revolution.
Today, the D&L Trail connects
people to nature, culture,
communities, recreation and
our industrial heritage.

EASTON AREA
Crossing the Lehigh River at Glendon, the D&L Trail follows the Lehigh
Canal towpath to Easton, where it turns right at the Forks of the
Delaware Trailhead and meets the Delaware Canal towpath. Easton is
home to America’s oldest open air market in a vibrant downtown
that includes fine restaurants, galleries, the Sigal Museum, and
the venerable State Theater. Six-mile-long Hugh Moore Park
stretches along the Lehigh River and is home to the National
Canal Museum, four miles of watered canal, a working lock,
and Pennsylvania’s only mule-drawn canal boat ride, the Josiah
White II. South of Easton, the trail passes through quaint
Raubsville, where a hydroelectric plant built at Locks
22 and 23 powered a paper mill and trolley line.

LEHIGH VALLEY
The Lehigh Valley is the third most populated region in Pennsylvania
and includes three cities: Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton. The D&L
Trail, built on the Lehigh Canal towpath, connects all three. There are 13
trailheads from Northampton to Easton. Visit www.delawareandlehigh.
org for current details. The Lehigh Valley was a world leader in iron,
steel, cement, and slate production, largely due to infrastructure
provided by the Lehigh Canal and, later, the Lehigh Valley Railroad.
Bethlehem, founded as a Moravian village in 1741, became
synonymous with the word “steel” throughout much of the
20th century. Next door, Allentown was a center of commerce
and Easton was an important manufacturing and transportation
hub. Today, visitors can enjoy arts, culture, history, sports, and
even casino gambling.
DELAWARE CANAL STATE PARK – BRISTOL AREA
Sturdy teams of mules once walked this towpath, pulling boats with up to
100 tons of coal and other cargo. Residents in these Delaware Canal towns of
New Hope, Yardley, Morrisville and Bristol formed Landmark Towns of Bucks
County to celebrate and promote that heritage – www.landmarktowns.com.
Yardley and its
200-structure
historic district
is an appealing
destination; a
convenient SEPTA
train station makes
Yardley easily
accessible to visitors
from Philadelphia. Heading south, Morrisville,
named for Robert Morris, the “Financier of
the American Revolution,” is located at the
tidal falls of the Delaware River, across from
Trenton, New Jersey. This is another stretch
of the D&L Trail where state-to-state loop
routes are possible using New Jersey’s
Delaware & Raritan Canal Trail.

The D&L Trail follows the canal inland as it winds toward the navigable
tidewaters of the Delaware River. When built, the canal was a 40-foot
wide, five-foot deep ditch dug by man and animals using simple plows
and tools. Although the canal and towpath have been transformed by
time, efforts are underway to clear obstacles. Check the D&L online
map for the latest updates at www.delawareandlehigh.org. One of
America’s oldest settlements – Bristol Borough – is at the trail’s
southern terminus. Bristol offers waterfront views of the Delaware
River, ethnic festivals, theater, and a traditional downtown. Silver
Lake Park and Nature Center and William Penn’s summer home,
Pennsbury Manor, are nearby. Using the East Coast Greenway you
can continue to Philadelphia.

The D&L Trail runs through Delaware
Canal State Park for 59 miles from
Easton to Bristol along the Delaware
River and Delaware Canal towpath. A
multi-use hike and bike path, the trail
winds through low hills and pastoral
valleys. Private and public land border
the park. Riegelsville and other small
towns along the river prospered when
the Delaware Canal opened in 1832.
Durham Furnace in Upper Bucks

The Corridor
The Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, one of 49
significant landscape of scenic waterways, forested mountains,
rolling hills and valleys, thriving cities and picturesque towns,
cultural landmarks, and the remnants of historic canals and early
industries. The D&L Corridor was established to preserve the
historic pathway that carried coal and iron from Wilkes-Barre to
Philadelphia. Stretching 165 miles from northeast Pennsylvania to
the Delaware River port of Bristol, near Philadelphia, the D&L Trail
Carbon, Lehigh, Northampton and Bucks.
The Trail
The D&L Trail is a 165-mile multi-use path that follows the routes
of three historic transportation systems between Wilkes-Barre and
Bristol, Pennsylvania: the Lehigh and Delaware canals and the
Lehigh Valley Railroad. These systems were responsible for
the transportation of anthracite coal from mines in the
industries and homes in eastern Pennsylvania and
beyond. The abundance of coal and other natural
resources, coupled with an efficient means of
transporting them, spurred unprecedented
industrial growth in the region and
enabled it to become a birthplace of
the American Industrial Revolution.
Today, the D&L Trail connects
people to nature, culture,
communities, recreation and
our industrial heritage.

EASTON AREA
Crossing the Lehigh River at Glendon, the D&L Trail follows the Lehigh
Canal towpath to Easton, where it turns right at the Forks of the
Delaware Trailhead and meets the Delaware Canal towpath. Easton is
home to America’s oldest open air market in a vibrant downtown
that includes fine restaurants, galleries, the Sigal Museum, and
the venerable State Theater. Six-mile-long Hugh Moore Park
stretches along the Lehigh River and is home to the National
Canal Museum, four miles of watered canal, a working lock,
and Pennsylvania’s only mule-drawn canal boat ride, the Josiah
White II. South of Easton, the trail passes through quaint
Raubsville, where a hydroelectric plant built at Locks
22 and 23 powered a paper mill and trolley line.
