PRESIDENT’S LETTER

HAPPY SPRING EVERYONE! We just had the most amazing Regional and Supported Entry ever and for those who were

unable to attend, we certainly missed you. As the pictures reflect, it was a small show but large

and festive occasion. I’d like to thank the Club for the opportunity to judge our Sweepstakes.

Quality speaks volumes over quantity! I had very nice dogs to judge and a tough decision when

it came to naming my Grand Sweeps winner – Morgan, owned by Randy & Anne Greenlee and

Molly Nye. He is a very nice puppy and I am anxious to watch him grow up. To Susan Hamil

and Heather Whitcomb, the Club sends out huge congratulations to GCH Quiet Creek’s Kiss and

Tell, “Kiss” for 3 breed wins and groups that took her and Bruce Schultz to a Best In Show on

Sunday!

As the pictures included in this issue reflect, we had tons of fun with decorations, piñatas and a

wonderful fajita banquet, cooked by Chef Tim.

Bloodhounds West Northern Chapter took this opportunity to honor CH Jo‐Li’s Father

Christmas, “Georgie” and all the memories we share of this wonderful young boy who left us all

too soon. Steve Aguirre and Georgie were quite team and especially at our show in 2011.

Steve has been an amazing mentor for the breed both inside and outside the show ring. To

show our appreciation for Steve’s 36 years involvement, the Club honored him with a bottle of

quality Partida Tequila, designer shot glasses and cigars – all of which he did NOT share! Thank

you Steve!

Thinking ahead to upcoming events, we need to start doing some major fund raising. Given

that, I’d like to thank Jan Stallings & Patsy Hall for coming up with the amazing idea of the

designer bottles of tequila that were raffled off at the show. They made an amazing amount of

money. And, the girls have many more ideas for future fund raising events. To get this process

rolling forward, BH’s West Northern Chapter is hosting a Fun Day on Saturday, June 30th at

Royal Oaks Park in Prunedale. We’re offering a trailing & tracking clinic, obedience class,


handling class, t‐shirts and a hot dog & hamburger lunch. We have secured the 3 Oaks area of

the park for the entire day. The costs are minimal but will go a long way toward our budget

goal of reaching $30,000.00 by fall of 2014. I certainly hope many of you will be able to join us

for a relaxing and fun filled day outside a dog show venue.

I am happy to report that our intake of rescues has slowed down considerably. Pat has done an

amazing job with managing finding wonderful homes. Please don’t forget to throw those dogs

a bone occasionally and donate a few dollars to rescue also.

In planning our Judy Robb Memorial Trailing Trial, the Board took a vote and has chosen

President’s Day weekend, 2013. Granite Construction has once again given permission to use

the quarry for the trial. This means we did an excellent job of cleaning up after ourselves and

most importantly, being safe while on the property. Thank you to everyone who attended last

November.

And speaking of trailing trials, our Cinco de Mayo Trial was a success! We had an entry of 3

MT’s and 1 MTI. Passing were, Badgershill Emily Bronte, CGC, new MT and Lisa McCall, owner

and handler. Emily was also winners bitch at the regional! GCH Badgershill Muldoon of

Heather, CGC, new MTI and Lyn Sherman, owner and handler. Muldoon also was Select Dog

and Award of Merit at the regional! These two are littermates from the first Irish litter and

have an amazing desire to trail. I have to thank Sheri Whetstine (new Club member) and Janis

Hardy for making the long drive down from Washington to judge for us. They both have great

dedication to our sport of mantrailing.

With a National Specialty looming in our future list of things to do, we put out a call for help

with some of the regular duties that are ongoing in the Club. Aldo Branch stepped forward

immediately to take on the role as Membership Co‐Director and will assist Myron with keeping

the Membership Directory up to date. John Galloway is now our Editor of Bonckers and I am

personally so thankful to John for relieving me! Lisa McCall is going to be assisting with trophy


selection and purchasing. Pam & Juancho Herranz are going to help Tim & me with the

hospitality at events. And as mentioned before, Jan & Patsy are going to do our primary fund

raisers. On behalf of the entire Board and Club – thank you all so very much! As has been

proven time and again, it takes a “village”. If anyone is interested in taking on the

Corresponding Secretary position to the ABC, please feel free to contact your Board. Myron will

be happy to assist this position and it certainly isn’t difficult or time consuming. I’d also like you

all to start thinking about corporate fund raising. Any of you who have ties to the corporate

world to secure cash donations or gift cards that can be used for raffles at our future events,

please let us know. We compensate with catalog advertising at our events and send out a

thank you letter on letterhead for their records.

I hope some of you who are pursuing trailing titles will consider Labor Day Weekend in Sandy

Oregon. PRBC is putting on a 3 day event with 2 days of trials and 1 day of trailing seminar by

Pat Moffitt. This event should be approved by the ABC within a couple of weeks and will be up

on PRBC’S web site.

Thank you all for everything you do and I hope to see you somewhere very soon!

for any mistakes or omission in the newsletter. I will gladly accept any contributions or

photographs/pictures you wish to be published In BONCKERS. In future issues I plan to add a

book review section. If you have not obtained a copy of RED DOG RISING by Jeff Schettler, it is

a must read. Jeff is a retired police K9 handler. “Red Dog Rising is a riveting account of one

man and one bloodhound who shared a passion for one thing—following the scent trail of

criminals.” The book is available from www.alpinepub.com. Any comments you may have to

Int. CH/Am. CH Badgershill Play IT Again‐MT starting a new career. The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office does a fund raiser‐called Tip‐A‐Cop for Special Olympics at Applebee’s in Windsor, CA. May 19, 2012 where Player is a greeter and meets all the customers.

THE MT EXAM

LISA MCCALL AND EMILY

It was just about 6 months ago that we tried out for our first MT and failed miserably. Emily,

who normally is very enthusiastic and accurate during trailing camps and practice runs, was in

heat, her head was not in the game and I couldn’t read any of her signs. We had several restarts

but each time, the start was bad. My confidence was shaken by our not passing this exam

which I really thought we would breeze through.‐ Lesson one, which the judges both stressed as

we discussed the failed exam ‐ work your dog rain or shine, in heat or not. You never know

when you will be needed in a real life situation and your dog should be ready to focus under

any condition.

We arrived at the trailing location early to give us both time to relax, get familiar with our

surroundings and stretch our legs. Luckily for me my exam time was 10am. I remembered the

winds in the area didn’t usually pick up until later in the afternoon, and sure enough the

morning was calm, a slight drizzle, overcast and cool, perfect conditions for a hound to find the

scent. My confidence was creeping back.

9:30am – as I walked toward the briefing area I passed Lyn Sherman with Mouldoon, smiling

broadly as they had just successfully completed their MTI. She asked if I would be OK with her

walking behind me, which I immediately said yes to. Pat Moffitt, Andy Hilkey and Mike

McMillan also asked to join. Knowing this group would be at my heals made me relax, we have

all worked together following each other at our trailing camps, and I knew I could mentally let

go of the “exam” nerves and get into the trailing camp mode. This made a big difference. As

many people have told me, whatever you feel ‐ tense, nerves, doubt, your hound will feel too.

The line connects you.

The judges went over the course details, asked what our alert would be, showed me the

starting area and handed me the scent article. I put Emily into her harness, put on my gloves


and headed towards the starting point alone. Emily was composed enough to sit and wait until I

snapped her line onto her harness. I showed her the scent article with a clear verbal “seek”. She

barely seemed to acknowledge the Ziploc before she was off. That always gives me a tinge of

doubt; I would like to see her take a huge inhale into the baggie, but that’s the beauty of these

amazing creatures, they don’t need to, they get it loud and clear!

The start was over before I knew it, we were heading down the road, and her tail was wagging

with a purpose. I was using a 25ft line which was fully extended, there was no time to question

if we were going in the right direction, we were. Our first obstacle was an X‐pen full of small

yappy dogs; Emily focused on the noise for a few seconds but got back to work after a verbal

reminder.

We crossed the main driveway without a second thought but got hung up on the other side

before committing to the grassy park.

I tried to keep all the lessons from the hours of trailing practice at the front of my mind. Stand

still at an intersection; let them examine all the options before moving forward. Trust your

hound. Watch for the negatives, don’t let them get distracted for too long, keep the flow going

and don’t yank the line when they lunge forward…..so many points to remember, it’s a little like

learning a dance. When its right and you both are in sync it’s a wonderful feeling. I remember

thinking to myself during that run, this is fun. And it was, we really connected, I was probably a

tad soft on the refocusing when she got distracted a couple of times but it was so dam great, to

be out with my hound on a trail, feeling confident we were heading in the right direction. She

knew it too, she could feel the confidence and moved forward like a pro.

Our last obstacle was a golf cart and man setting up cones; Emily wouldn’t let him go and

insisted on checking out the cart. I quickly explained we were working and asked if he would

mind her coming over to look. After a quick nose we dismissed him and moved on. Later I was

told the subject had ridden in the cart the day before!


As I have been trained to keep an eye out for clues along the way, I spied a person sitting

against a tree some way off, a smile crept onto my face and I watched for Emily to make the

turn toward them. After several more strides sure enough she did, her head came up and she

saw the subject. Her gait changed, became more bouncy and within a couple of seconds she

was upon the subject with the standard Emily wiggle, I turned towards the judges and clearly

stated this was our subject. Everyone erupted into loud cheers. Hugs all round, smiling faces

and one very happy dog. We did it.

A Different Type of Tracking

INTRODUCING ‐ UNITED BLOOD TRACKERS (UBT) United Blood Trackers (UBT) is a national educational, promotional and testing organization

independent of any breed club or registry. The organization will support the legalization of

tracking dogs in new states and will offer training workshops. UBT is dedicated to promoting

resource conservation through the use of trained tracking dogs in the ethical recovery of big

game. UBT supports recovery efforts afield, the education of hunters, the training and testing

of dog handlers and their dogs, and legislative efforts to promote blood tracking. Information

TRAINING AND EVALUATION PROGRAM

AS OF 1/29/2010

1. GENERAL PROVISIONS A. AS EVALUATIONS ARE BASED ON THE TRACKING TEAM’S POTENTIAL FOR RECOVERING

WOUNDED GAME WITH HUNTERS, THE DEMONSTRATION OF ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR FOR THIS TASK BY BOTH THE DOG AND THE HANDLER WILL BE PART OF THE ASSESSMENT.

B. EVALUATIONS MAY BE CONDUCTED BY ANYONE. JUDGES MUST BE APPROVED BY THE UBT BOARD OF DIRECTORS.

C. THE HANDLER SHOULD NOT KNOW WHERE THE LINE IS DURING THE EVALUATION (BLIND TRACK).

D. UBT‐APPROVED JUDGES MUST CONDUCT THE EVALUATIONS THAT RESULT IN CERTIFICATION TO TRACK ON PUBLIC LAND IN ILLINOIS (UBT‐I) OR THAT WILL BE USED TOWARDS THE UBT CERTIFICATE OF USEFULNESS (UBT‐II).

E. JUDGES WILL BE AVAILABLE TO CONDUCT EVALUATIONS AT UBT EVENTS HELD FOR THAT PURPOSE. EVALUATIONS MAY BE CONDUCTED BY JUDGES AT OTHER TIMES AT THE DISCRETION, CONVENIENCE AND AVAILABILITY OF THE JUDGE. UBT MAY ASSESS A FEE, AS DETERMINED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, FOR PROVIDING EVALUATIONS.

F. HANDLERS WILL BE PROVIDED A CARD FOR RECORDING EVALUATIONS. UPON SUCCESSFUL EVALUATION OF THE UBT‐I BY A JUDGE, CERTIFICATION TO TRACK ON PUBLIC LAND IN ILLINOIS WILL BE PROVIDED, IF REQUESTED. UPON SUCCESSFUL EVALUATION OF THE UBT‐II BY A JUDGE AND A WRITTEN REPORT TO THE UBT DIRECTOR OF TESTING DOCUMENTING THE RECOVERY OF A WOUNDED DEER WHICH REQUIRED THE USE OF THE TRACKING DOG, A CERTIFICATE OF USEFULNESS WILL BE ISSUED.

G. THERE IS NO LIMIT TO THE NUMBER OF TIMES AN EVALUATION MAY BE CONDUCTED. H. BITCHES IN SEASON WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO INTERFERE WITH OTHER DOGS BEING

EVALUATED. I. A DOG IS NOT ELIGIBLE TO BE ENTERED UNDER ANY JUDGE THAT HAS BRED, OWNED,

BOARDED, TRAINED, OR HANDLED THE DOG WITHIN 12 MONTHS PRIOR TO THE DATE OF THE TEST.

J. EVALUATIONS ARE PERFORMED ON LEAD. UBT I AND UBT II EVALUATIONS MAY BE PERFORMED OFF LEAD, IN THOSE STATES WHERE OFF‐LEAD TRACKING IS ALLOWED. IF A DOG IS BEING EVALUATED OFF LEAD, THE DOG MUST BE OBSERVED BY THE EVALUATOR/JUDGE AS POSITIVELY FOLLOWING THE TRACK. DOGS THAT ARE UNABLE TO BE SUFFICIENTLY OBSERVED BY THE EVALUATOR/JUDGE WILL NOT BE PASSED EVEN IF THEY FIND THE DEER PART AT THE END OF THE TRAIL.

K. THE HANDLER MUST BE AN APPROPRIATE DISTANCE BEHIND THE DOG TO ALLOW THE JUDGE OR EVALUATOR TO ASSESS WITH CONFIDENCE THAT THE HANDLER IS NOT GUIDING THE DOG.

L. THE EVALUATION MAY BE TERMINATED WHEN THE PERFORMANCE CAN NO LONGER BE CONSIDERED SUCCESSFUL.

M. LINES MAY BE LAID IN ANY TYPE OF TERRAIN IN WHICH TRACKING NORMALLY OCCURS. WHILE THE HANDLER SHOULD FUNCTION AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE TRACKING TEAM, THE DOG MUST LEAD THE HANDLER THROUGH THE TRACK, RATHER THAN THE HANDLER GUIDING THE DOG. JUDGES AND EVALUATORS SHOULD BE SURE OF THIS WHEN SNOW OR THE TERRAIN ALLOWS THE TRACK TO BE SEEN BY THE HANDLER.

N. A SUITABLE DEER PART WILL BE PLACED AT THE END OF THE TRAIL. 2. Eligibility

A. ALL BREEDS OR COMBINATION OF BREEDS OF DOGS ARE ELIGIBLE TO BE EVALUATED. B. THERE IS NO AGE REQUIREMENT FOR DOGS TO BE EVALUATED. C. SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE UBT‐II WITH AN EVALUATOR MAY BE REQUIRED

PRIOR TO ASSESSMENT BY A JUDGE, AT THE JUDGE’S DISCRETION.


3. WAIVER OF LIABILITY A UBT WAIVER OF LIABILITY WILL BE COMPLETED AND SIGNED FOR ALL EVALUATIONS CONDUCTED BY UBT. ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST SIGN ANY HOLD HARMLESS AGREEMENTS PRESENTED BY UBT, LANDOWNERS OR OTHER THIRD PARTIES. 4. EVALUATION LEVELS

LEVEL 1 UBT – AA Purpose APTITUDE ASSESSMENT. Type DRAG TRAIL. Length ABOUT 150 YARDS. Age AT LEAST ½ HOUR.

Obstacles ONE TURN. Scoring PASS / FAIL

Judge OR EVALUATOR ONE. Preparation and Execution A DEER PART IS DRAGGED ALONG THE COURSE OF THE TRACK.

THE HANDLER WILL BE SHOWN THE START AND DIRECTION OF THE TRACK.

Evaluation THE DOG IS EXPECTED TO GENERALLY FOLLOW THE TRACK AND INDICATE THE DEER PART AT THE END. A PASS REQUIRES THAT THE TRACKING TEAM SHOWS PROMISE AND THAT THE DOG SHOWS A GENERAL INTEREST IN FOLLOWING THE TRACK.

LEVEL 2 UBT – I Purpose THE UBT‐I DEMONSTRATES THE BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY TO

TRACK WOUNDED GAME BY ASSESSING THE ABILITY OF THE HANDLER/DOG TEAM TO FOLLOW AN ARTIFICIAL BLOOD TRAIL.

Type INTERMITTENT BLOOD TRAIL APPLIED BY ANY METHOD, WHICH MAY INCLUDE TRACKING SHOES.

Length 1/4 MILE (ABOUT 400 YARDS). Age AT LEAST 2 HOURS.

Obstacles TWO TURNS AND ONE WOUND BED. Scoring PASS / FAIL

Judge OR EVALUATOR ONE. UBT‐APPROVED JUDGES MUST CONDUCT THE EVALUATIONS THAT RESULT IN CERTIFICATION TO TRACK ON PUBLIC LAND IN ILLINOIS.

Preparation and Execution APPROXIMATELY 8 OUNCES OF BLOOD WITHOUT THE USE OF TRACKING SHOES, OR 3 OUNCES OF BLOOD WITH THE USE OF TRACKING SHOES, WILL BE USED OVER THE COURSE OF THE TRACK. THE HANDLER WILL BE SHOWN THE START AND DIRECTION OF THE TRACK.

Evaluation THE DOG IS EXPECTED TO POSITIVELY FOLLOW THE TRACK AND INDICATE THE DEER PART AT THE END. A PASS REQUIRES THAT



THE TRACKING TEAM SHOW SUFFICIENT SKILL TO FIND WOUNDED GAME.

LEVEL 3 UBT – II Purpose THE UBT‐II DEMONSTRATES MORE ADVANCED SKILLS NECESSARY

TO TRACK WOUNDED GAME BY ASSESSING THE ABILITY OF THE HANDLER/DOG TEAM TO FOLLOW AN ARTIFICIAL BLOOD TRAIL UNDER MORE DEMANDING CONDITIONS.

Type INTERMITTENT BLOOD TRAIL APPLIED BY ANY METHOD, WHICH MAY INCLUDE TRACKING SHOES.

Length 1/2 MILE (800‐900 YARDS). Age OVERNIGHT OR NOT LESS THAN 8 HOURS.

Obstacles THREE TURNS. TWO WOUND BEDS. Scoring PASS / FAIL

PREREQUISITE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE UBT‐II WITH AN EVALUATOR MAY BE REQUIRED PRIOR TO ASSESSMENT BY A JUDGE, AT THE JUDGE’S DISCRETION.

Judge OR EVALUATOR ONE. UBT‐APPROVED JUDGES MUST CONDUCT THE EVALUATIONS THAT WILL BE USED TOWARDS THE UBT CERTIFICATE OF USEFULNESS.

Preparation and Execution APPROXIMATELY 8 OUNCES OF BLOOD WITHOUT THE USE OF TRACKING SHOES, OR 3 OUNCES OF BLOOD WITH THE USE OF TRACKING SHOES, WILL BE USED OVER THE COURSE OF THE TRACK. THE HANDLER WILL BE SHOWN THE START AND DIRECTION OF THE TRACK.

Evaluation THE DOG IS EXPECTED TO POSITIVELY FOLLOW THE TRACK AND INDICATE THE DEER PART AT THE END. CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO THE WILLINGNESS TO TRACK (INTEREST), MANNER OF WORK, ACCURACY, FORWARD PROGRESS AND ULTIMATE ACHIEVEMENT. THE HANDLER IS EXPECTED TO PROVIDE PHYSICAL AND VERBAL ASSISTANCE TO THE DOG, IF AND WHEN NECESSARY, AND IN SUCH A MANNER THAT THE SEARCH IS UNDERTAKEN AS A TEAM EFFORT.
