Artistic Director’s Foreword:Two months before last year’s BOK Festival, I was in the small town of Avignon in the south of France visiting a college friend who I had not seen for many years. The life of the people of Avignon is simple and unoccupied, except for the arts festival held every year in July, when the whole town is brimming with tourists, performers and spectators of all sorts. This ancient town built during the Roman times preserves its city walls and palace, with a population of about 600,000 people. While walking through each empty performance space, the mere thought of the festival is enough to cause excitement in the hearts of people. Breathing new life into an old city while also helping the sustainable management of culture, Avignon presented the world with a solution akin to an “ideal state”.

Macau has stronger attractive factors than Avignon, like its urban vitality, historical heritage, or its mix of East and West. But when it comes to contemporary art and the development of mainstream and alternative theatre, Macau is in urgent need of vitality. I kept asking myself, “What lessons can we learn from the success of Avignon Festival?”

“A cultural festival can change an entire city, an arts festival can change the entire history of art.”

Making BOK Festival in Macau is our dream as artists, independent curators and theatre managers. The course you follow with a cultural festival depends on the context of cultural development of said city. Macau

needs a more diverse artistic atmosphere, with new forward-looking theatre experiments. What BOK Festival brings is this kind of alternative theatre aesthetic, this trend in contemporary art.

Although Own Theatre ended its 4-year run in September 2015, the seeds have been planted. We hope that, by using nongovernmental forces, we are able to establish connections between small theatres and spread the concept of “Morais Theatre Village” across all the different communities in Macau. BOK Festival also plans to engage in diverse cooperat ion with other non-governmental arts festivals from around the world, exchanging, promoting and introducing new works, connect ing Macau’s smal l theatres to Asia’s, or even the world’s, theatre landscape.

I want to thank our family and friends, artists, co-organizers and sponsors who have always supported us these last four years. It is because of your trust, participation, contribution and bond that we were able to keep “fighting” in this small city. As a young community-driven theatre festival, we hope that BOK Festival can keep growing and maturing, getting more and more people to consume art, allowing more and more artists to come here to work and creating a richer cultural atmosphere that permeates every nook and cranny of this small city.

BOK Festival has since 2013 taken the concept of “interconnection, working hard and fighting with all you’ve got” and explored the possibilities and forward-looking nature of theatre, inviting every year artists from all circles and showcasing works of experimental theatre, bringing new shockwaves to the theatre wor ld in Macau. Last year we introduced “Morais Theatre Village”, adopting the idea of establishing ties between small private theatres and connecting several theatres from the Avenida de Venceslau de Morais area. This year, the scope is even wider, linking four places: the Kun Iam Tchai Temple area, Estrada de Coelho do Amaral, Avenida do Almirante Lacerda and Rua dos Pescadores, in a total of 8 privately-run

performance spaces. Those include Pou Fong Industrial Building, LIVE Music Association, Ox Warehouse, Hiu Kok Theatre, Wind Box Community, Step Out Small Experimental Theatre, Casa de Portugal and Hiu Kok Lab. Through concentrated non-governmental cultural resources, links are established and the community is connected to the global network. Apart from this, two state-owned spaces will also be featured, namely Macao Cultural Centre and Black Box Theatre at Old Court Building.

BOK Fest iva l i s the resu l t o f a un ion between several non-governmental entities. It is organized by Own Theatre, Macau Experimental Theatre and Point View Art

Association, with the help of several non-governmental groups from Macau, including Hiu Kok Theatre, Theatre Farmers, Macau Music Power and Rolling Puppet Alternative Theatre. BOK Festival, apart from providing local art ists with a platform for art ist ic innovation, also introduces the Macau public to the local arts spaces in community, proving that the “theatre” is not something out of reach, and can be just around the corner in the most common and approachable of spaces. It builds a more vibrant artistic a tmosphere fo r the loca l communi ty , contributing for the sustainable development of the artistic environment through the union between non-governmental and local forces.

Our body is an archive, the witness and carrier of history, a location to understand how the assembled histories and memories have inscribed themselves deeply on us. Our body is also a catalyst for memory, and the site of transgressive impulses. We use the embodied and situated practices to reenact the past, to transmit experiences from one generation to another, and to tease out the biopolitical logic of a specific historical situation.

Red

Red is the newest work by the Beijing-based Living Dance Studio. It is a documentary performance that finds its inspiration and point of departure in The Red Detachment of Women, a ballet premiered on September 26, 1964 in Beijing, and one of the eight revolutionary model theatrical works that formed the official cultural canon during the Cultural Revolution. Recounting the story of WU Qionghua, a peasant girl who flees enslavement to join the Red Army-led women’s detachment in Hainan Province to fight the Nationalist troop, this nationally renowned ballet was once hailed as an impeccable fusing of revolutionary ideology and artistic mastery, blending Western ballet techniques with the fundamentals of Chinese classical and folk dances.

Turning the artistic and critical attention to the imagery of the heroic, gun-wielding ballerinas balancing on their toes, the Living Dance Studio uses a variety of documentary materials—publications and visual materials about the original revolutionary model ballet, footage of recently conducted interviews, biographical and personal stories of the revolutionary ballet dancers, etc.—to engage with the performers’ bodies on stage. More importantly, the piece draws upon and invests in the memories and understandings of the performers and interviewees in regard to the Cultural Revolution (1966–76) to critically reflect upon The Red Detachment of Women as an ideological ly-charged cultural and collective symbol during the Cultural Revolution era, an over-consumed and -disengaged artifact in the post-socialist period, and a cultural form of feminist intervention that continues to faci l i tate women’s use of collective power to challenge their social environments in today’s China.

Every year we invite artists from Macau and neighbouring regions to try a creative method outside of their comfort zone in order to challenge themselves. The goal is not to create a “complete perfect” work in the first stage, the most important is the possibility of exploration and development. In this way, the work goes through several stages, and the audience’s participation in one of the stages (viewing the work) makes them, in a way, a part of the creative process. The interaction between the audience and the artist can create a beautiful process.

One "Give it a shot" series programme ticket include two creators' presentation and can redeem a drink coupon in BOK Club. The location shown on the ticket corresponds to the first presentation.

The dining table is an object that connects human relationships. The dining table is an embodiment of the relationship between man and food. This dining table seems to bear the weight of all life, but can it find the answers for the problems between me and society, me and my family, or me and my life? I have many problems with this world, can I make the choice to eat or to be eaten? Or are we, after all, food to be disposed of on that plate on the table?

The story begins with a game of Go.In a tumultuous time, with the Sino-Japanese war ready to strike, Go Seigen defeated 16 Go masters, finally earning the right to play against the highest Japanese Go player of the time, Honinbo Shusai.Go Seigen’s new “San San, Hoshi, Tengen” pattern broadened the horizons of Go and started a brand new movement. The match lasted from October of 1933 to January of the following year, a period of three months. During that time, Honinbo Shusai adjourned the game several times, returning home to study the match with his disciples. Furthermore, the conservative faction was extremely critical of Go Seigen’s playing style. Both sides were evenly matched, but ultimately Honinbo Shusai won by two points. The game of the century, 2 points, played between one’s index and middle fingers, started a dialog between two people.

BOK Club is like a laid-back party held in a different theatre almost every night after the shows. It allows the audience and the artist to interact with each other. This will give the audience a deeper understanding of the creative work and provide the artists with new inspiration. It is also a networking opportunity for artists and people who work in related industries. This year will see the continuation of BOK Club, with the number of sessions increased to 16, held in a different small theatre every night after the shows (except for the performance in the Cultural Centre).

Audiences with any BOK Festival ticket can join any session of BOK Club. A ticket for the "Give it a Shot series" programme can redeem a drink coupon at the door of the theatre.

Originally named Horizon Theatre (Macao), is a small theatre space founded in 2011. After a relocation and expansion in 2013, Own Theatre officially became an independently-run space for arts and drama. Its aim was to provide a workshop space for creators who engage in artistic and cultural works such as theatre, music or dance, among others, as well as a venue for rehearsal, practice, public performances and exhibitions at the disposal of a new generation of people interested in their artistic development.Although in September of 2015 ,the landlord terminated the rental and made it impossible for it to exist as a physical space, this did not lead Own Theatre to shut down. Instead, it gathered even more arts groups to expand its BOK Festival, a self-organized event born in 2013. Now jointly organized with several arts groups, BOK Festival became a fixed yearly event for Own Theatre . Persisting in its yearly activities, it slowly developed into a non-governmental theatre festival with an artistic focus and an international scope.

(Incubating new works) 、觀眾參與 (Audience

BOK Festival began as “Theatre x Theatre” in 2013 in a non-governmental black box theatre inside an industrial building, a project born out of the goal of connecting multiple independent creative works. Two years later, the decision was made to adopt the festival format as “BOK Festival”, as well as to connect four small theatres inside industrial buildings in the area of Avenida Venceslau de Morais in Macau, creating the concept of “Morais Theatre Village”. This year, BOK Festival is “BOK for more”, and apart from going beyond just a

single street and interconnecting other artistic spaces from four different neighbourhoods in Macau, we are even more focused on the future of BOK Festival. Therefore, we have established a team dedicated to its future development and continuous operation, no longer functioning as a team that gathers only once per year at a set time. Through concentrated non-governmental resources, we will connect more privately-run organisms in order to work together for the development of BOK Festival, building a cultural life network

with theatre at its core. Furthermore, we will strive to establish connections with other non-governmental arts festivals and theatres in the neighbouring regions, building a network of non-governmental regional cooperation, launching a comprehensive joint collaboration, endorsing and introducing works of art as well as connecting Macau’s small theatres to the broader theatre network in Asia or even worldwide. In addition to this, we also plan to join hands with educational institutions in Macau and in the region to coordinate hands-on internship and training programs, as well as other joint community projects.

Putting the BOK Festival concept into practice is not something that can be achieved simply by running a three-week program every year. The program presentat ion is only one of the stages, and the most important is the preparat ion process, particularly when it comes to the four major elements of incubating new works, audience engagement, communi ty bui ld ing and resources development and sharing. These four aspects must be continuously pursued throughout the whole year. Therefore, we have created the “Sup-Bok Us” program in order to seek all types of support and partnerships throughout all circles of society, allowing us to put the BOK Festival concept into practice one step at a time. Just as we encourage the artists from “Give it a Shot” to exercise a “work in progress” method of creation and not to pursue a “completable” work in one step, we also take a step by step approach to development without fear of failure. And even in case of failure, we can take different steps to start fresh, even from scratch, for the

opportunities to succeed only come to those who persevere.

“Sup-Bok Us” is a resource mobilization program, with a particular focus on the strength of interconnections, hoping to break free of the current one-sided and excessively concentrated government funding method, building a community and network-based strength, creating an environment of financial support for cultural and performing arts project towards individuals and private enterprises. Apart from support in terms of funds and in-kind supports, we also seek to achieve the involvement of society, for the value of “Sup-Bok Us” does not lie in the amount of investment of resources or funds, but in those “connections” and “involvement”.

In order to achieve that, there is one thing we cannot lack: the connection between you and BOK Festival!
