PRESIDENT’SMESSAGE

After serving 4 years on the main committee, it is with great
honour that I now serve as your Club President for the year
2019/2020. It has been challenging for the committee for
the last four years, but we survived under the leadership
of Mr Lim Shin Lid, our Immediate Past President and
Mr Kenny Koay.
My sincere appreciation and gratitude to both the immediate
past Presidents and the previous Committee members for
their contribution and dedication during their tenure, not
forgetting also a big thank you to the current committees for
agreeing to serve the Club together with me for the coming
year. The challenges we face this year would be the expiring
of the leasehold land and the improvement of our financial position. There are areas in the club which need looking at
for example: The Fun Pub and the Captain Deck to name a
few, however priority will be focused at the maintenance of
the club and cost reduction. We need to also provide better
facilities for our ever-growing younger members.
We hope that all members will give us full support and co-operation to make our Club the Premier Club on the Island.
“
“
In short, it's going to be a busy year for the committee
and we hope that all members will give us full support and
co-operation to make our Club the Premier Club on the Island.
Thank you.

EDITOR'SMESSAGE
In the just concluded AGM on June 30, Sunday afternoon, we saw a good turnout of 278 enthusiastic members, and witnessed lively deliberation on a variety of issues concerning the Club and members. A new Committee was elected, mostly unopposed, with Najieb Ariff as President. The make-up of the Committee, but for four new members, consists mostly members from the previous term, thus we have a good mix of youth, seniors, as well as new bloods. Our much hoped for continuity has been preserved; we look forward to an exciting and productive term ahead. At the AGM many members posed questions and expressed themselves on topics of their concerns. It is great to note the level of interest that members have on our Club affairs. Due to time constraint as well as scope of the AGM some of members’ questions could only be answered collectively. We do ask that members keep the fire of the AGM burning for the rest of the term, and better, it’s time to come forward and put your ideas into action. There are numerous committees and sub-committee on different disciplines for those who wish to participate. The Club needs the service of many talents in variety of fields; financial, technical, management, to name a few. The narrative at the AGM has been on topics such as the Club financials, cost savings, support for Section and Group activities, special (improvement) projects, together with some ongoing projects such as the SOP and Document Control, there will be exciting challenges and missions to be accomplished.

“
The Nautilus, with effect from this issue, will be published on a quarterly basis (July/August/September) instead of on alternate month; the next issue would be for October/November/December. The change would likely realize substantial savings for the Club, while at the same time allow more time for the production work. Our plan is to eventually have the eNautilus as the predominant medium for the magazine.

GM’SMESSAGE
Maintaining the status quo is not an option! PSC must move forward.
On behalf of Management and staff, we say “Thank You” to our ex President Mr Lim Shin Lid.
“We would be remiss if we did not thank you for your contribution, especially for providing some decisive turning points.
We would not have been able to accomplish many projects without your wise counsel and patient advice.
As you look back on your time with us, please know that our achievements would not have been possible without you at the helm.”
I would like to thank the members who turned up at the 2019 Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 30th June. Congratulations to Mr Najieb Ariff on his election to President in the new term FY2019/20.
The AGM attendance and voting demonstrated the overall concern for the well-being of the Club. On behalf of Management and staff I would also like to welcome Mr Tang Khye Kian, Mr Lim Beng Kok, Ms Chew Saw Hoon and Ms Annie Lim to the Management Committee.
There was widespread discussion at the AGM on “ways and means” to improve the Club’s financial performance. The Management Committee and Club Management have been looking at new ways to increase revenue, some of which may initially appear unconventional. But the Club is in survival mode (and has been for a number of years) and therefore all avenues have to be explored if we are to reverse the annual deficit trend.
Times ahead will be challenging. Fortunately, we have already implemented several cost-saving initiatives. For example, we

“ “
have recently replaced almost all the lights with brighter energy-saving LED lights, which achieve an estimated 60% reduction in power consumption and utility costs.
Greater adoption of technology is a way towards increasing operational efficiencies. To this end, we are working on a new Club Management IT System that integrates three existing, but outdated, standalone systems. It will automate certain manual tasks currently undertaken by staff, which will in turn cut manpower and improve productivity, hence reducing costs. The new system, which comes with a free mobile app, will also introduce simpler and “greener” processes.
Penang Swimming Club, as the club it has always been, is viewed by many as being in a “comfortable state”, but this is not sustainable. With your support and the help from Management, Committee members and the Club Management, I will continue to strive to improve the Club to one that not only exists, but also thrives in 2019/20, and thereafter. The Club, in the coming financial year, will continue to spend prudently in order to cut costs and stem year on year, gradually increasing financial deficits. The CAPEX budget for the period 1st April 2019 to 31st March 2020 shows a 29% reduction compared to the budget for the preceding year. Proposed CAPEX includes those that directly benefit our diverse membership, and we are also planning a much required refurbishment of the Fun Pub décor and fittings.

MEMBERS’ NIGHT ON 14TH JUNE
Our Multi-Purpose Hall was teeming with members by
7pm, enjoying fellowship accompanied by unlimited flow of beer and wine with finger foods. The event started at 8pm and was graced by Club President, Mr Lim Shin Lid, who
extended a warm welcome to the attendees and wished all a
delightful evening.
The 5-piece band in attendance, Peak of the Jammed, set
the evening's mood with their selection of Disco hits of the
70s while club members helped themselves to the sumptuous
buffet dinner spread.
In between Band breaks, members were entertained by
guest performers, Darwen & Friends with their presentations
“Disco Inferno Dance", "Flash Dance" & “Stars on 45”. In
addition, Darwen performed a short disco demonstration
for the members.
Club Happenings
| 10
One of the highlights of the evening was the cutting of
the 116th Club Anniversary cake by members of the Main
Committee, Trustees and Past Presidents.
Peak of the Jammed continued to entertained members with
lively disco music and songs; and the band members were
instrumental in getting the crowd into a joyous mood.
Members’ Night 2019 was a success and definitely was one of the biggest events organized by the Club. All the
approximately 550 attendees had a wonderful evening. We
would like to thank the Wine Shop - our main sponsor and
everyone who had contributed in one way or another for
making this event a success.

MESRA RAYA CELEBRATION
Club Happenings
| 12
On June 23, 2019 – the festive event “Hari Raya Puasa Eid
al-Fitri” was celebrated at our Club at the Multi-Purpose Hall,
Level 14. Eid al-Fitri, also called the "Festival of Breaking the
Fast", is a religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide
that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of
fasting. This religious Eid is the first and only day in the month of Shawwal during which Muslims are not permitted
to fast. There were Raya decorations and the night was full
of glittering lights at the MPH hall and our members were
attracted to the decorations and started taking photos. There
were about 210 Club members who attended the dinner.
The Club had invited children from Pusat Nasyiatul Aisyiyah,
an orphanage at Balik Pulau, Penang to participate as well.
The event was kicked off at 7.35pm by Mr Lim Shin Lid, our
President with his speech, and then an opening dance started
by 6 dancers from Kumpulan Himz. The Members were
treated to traditional Malay food in buffet style. Following
the programme, the band entertainment “Heart Desire”,

entertained the members with Raya songs. The President
together with the Committee Members distributed out the
goodies and “Duit Raya” to the orphanage later.
Overall, it was a memorable time for the children from the
Pusat Nasyiatul who had enjoyed themselves on this special
occasion. The Club would like to thank Mydin Emporium
Penang for the sponsorship of the hampers, and, thanked the
Management and staff in their effort and hard work to make
this event a success.

CLUB AGM ON SUNDAY 30TH JUNE 2019
| 14
At around 2.30pm, our President called the Annual General
Meeting to order. Present were 278 members who had
registered and were waiting in anticipation for the meeting
to start.
First item on the agenda was the confirmation of the minutes of the previous adjourned AGM held on 8th July, 2018, which
was duly passed by the floor.
The next two items, which were to adopt the Annual Report
and Accounts for the year ended 31st March 2019 and adoption
of proposed Budget, witnessed lots of interaction between
the office bearers and members. There were lively exchanges
of views, and comments, suggestions and clarifications, all of which were noted for the well-being of the Club.
On the election of Committee members for the term 2019/20,
there were no contest and the Committee was elected as
nominated, with the exception of the post of Club Captain
which was contested. The rest of the candidates for the Main
Committee assumed their positions as proposed. As there
was a request that the election of Club Captain and Internal
Auditor were be conducted by secret ballot, members
patiently queued up for their ballot papers and thereafter
cast their votes. The election proceeded smoothly and was
successfully concluded.
This was followed by the election of six members of the Election
Committee, a member of the Development Committee,
External Auditor and subsequently the two resolutions; one
to increase monthly subscriptions fee and another to increase
Junior to OTM conversion fee were proposed, and deliberated
and put to a vote. Members decided not to increase the fees.
Upon the adjournment of the AGM at around 6.40pm,
members present had a wonderful time catching up with each
other while enjoying a simple buffet spread and drinks.

ANGLING SECTION
Fishing is 90% luck and 10% skill, or so I heard. But there are
times when you do everything possible under the sun and
there are still no bites, why?
Could it be the temperature of the water? The position of the
moon or sun? Wrong place, wrong time?
Anyway, getting back to the report on our fishing on May 26; it was what you can call a test of patience or endurance. We
casted far, we casted near, we casted everywhere. When
the fishes were not biting, what else could go wrong? The Heavens opened up with strong winds and heavy rain.
I was at the marshal’s table holding on to the big umbrella
with a few others, we were at the losing end when suddenly
clear skies and the sunny days was upon us.
I was telling everyone near me that the fishes will start biting once the sun comes up and heats up the cold water, but it
was the ‘juak kee’ (you know, the heat from the ground from
a short rain spell?) that was a killer.
All said and done, only about 9 fishes were caught that afternoon; it was a really no-fish-biting day!

The Scuba Section’s new term 2019/2020 started soon after
its AGM, which was held on 18 May 2019 at MPH, Level 14.
It was a huge success with a good turn-up from members. A
big thank you to our past Secretary Ms Yvonne for the well
planned setting of the AGM and our Social Officer, Ms Annie for the yummy Nyonya dishes served at the dinner. The big
applause from members to these 2 ladies is well deserved, as
they have done a wonderful job.
More importantly, we like to thank our Hon. Chairman of the
Scuba Section, Mr Fred McGuire who has sacrificed much and constantly ensured that scuba activities are carried out with
the interest of its members and bringing back BSAC 225 into
action. It is without doubt that this comes from team work
and all our senior instructors, dive leaders and sports divers
who have dedicated their time consistently, contributing to
the success and training of new divers. It is a perfect timing
and hereon, we wish to record our heartfelt congratulations
to Mr Fred for receiving the award “Appreciation for His
Contribution and Dedication to the Penang Swimming Club
Scuba Section” from our Governor, TYT Tun during Patron’s
Night on 12 April 2019. Besides that, there are only a few
minor changes in the Committee line-up.
The Scuba Section wishes to say a big thank you to those
who have not been re-appointed, and welcome to the new
committee members.

Activities that happened recently:
1. 11 May 2019 - Scuba Social Gathering near Snake Temple
- This annual event is never short of fun and laughter
accompanied with tasty food and drinks from juice, to beer or
wine! For such gatherings, family members could bring their
spouse and children. It is a great opportunity for members to
meet up, especially new ocean divers meeting their seniors,
to touch base with one another. It was a successful evening
and everybody enjoyed themselves.
2. 21 & 22 April 2019 (2D1N) - Open water assessment at Pulau
Payar happened quite interestingly as we have a combined
group of new divers, instructors and fun divers; which totaled
up to 34 members. It was a big group and thanks to our DO,
Jonathan who managed to secure enough boats to ferry
everybody to the dive center. Overall, the visibility was not
very good and challenging for open water assessment as the
divers encountered undercurrents.

More than 60 people turned up for Part 2 of the Retro Dance
Party held at Level 14 and it was an overwhelming success. As
he did last year in Part One of the Retro Dance Party, Frances
Cabanal came all the way from the Philippines to enthrall us
with his dancing skills. Everyone had a great time with the
dancing competition; two groups faced-off trying to outdo
each other. At the end of the day, its not about winning but the
genuine sense of camaraderie and team spirit that prevailed.
This event was followed by a high tea where members tucked
into the yummy food, interacting with one and all.
In addition, our regular Retro Dance Fitness classes which are

attention as well. Sam who conducts the class, incorporates
15 minutes of dancing with the towel as part of the body
toning exercises. Do come and try these classes, you will

Our 1st ever Mini Line Dance Jam was held on May 10, 2019 at
the Clubhouse. Thankfully, the weather was surprisingly cool,
having had a really hot, dry spell for weeks! We were joined
by our fellow line dancers all the way from Perth Australia,
who were graciously hosted by Ms Ivee Lee. The jam started
right after dinner, with 30 dance songs almost back-to-back.
Our line dancers from every class, who have been tirelessly
practising the line dance list for a fortnight, hit the dance
floor immediately with our guests from Australia. Our line dance instructor, Ms Emmeline Yong, decided to throw in an
extra challenge by adding line dance songs which she had
taught us previously! Fortunately, line dancing has enabled
us to enhance our memory span and we were able to breeze
through the impromptu music effortlessly (hopefully!). It was
truly amazing to be able to dance in complete synchronization
with our Australian guests although we have never danced
together before. In a nutshell, everyone had a marvellous
time dancing the night away and a wonderful evening!
We would like to thank Ms Ivee Lee, our Committee Member,
for organising and making this happen so that our line
dancers have the opportunity to socialise with other clubs
from around the world...and not to forget our fearless line
dance instructor, Ms Emmeline Yong, who ensured we had all
the right moves!
MINI LINE DANCE JAM
On a more formal note, our Group’s AGM was successfully
held the following day at noon. All the previous committee
members, except for Mr Choy who had previously decided
to retire, retained their positions unanimously. There were
also 2 new additions (also unchallenged!) to the committee in
order to form a team of 9. Congratulations to our 2019/2020
Committee Members! Upon adjournment of the AGM, our
Dance Sport members enjoyed a lovely buffet lunch while
mingling around.
Last but not least, we would like to thank Mr Choy for his time
and effort as the Secretary of DSG.

DARTS GROUP1ST QUARTERLY COMPETITION26 MAY 2019
Eager and energetic Darts Group competitors gathered
on a rainy Sunday afternoon, 26 May, for our 1st Quarterly
Competition. This is the first competition arranged by the new Darts Committee, with our new Darts Captain, Devyn
Khoo.
The response for this event was delightfully enthusiastic,
with 25 members registered, eager to demonstrate their
well honed skills. To provide an exciting afternoon, Captian
Devyn devised a cut-throat mixed Singles match, with four
rounds of sudden-death eliminations. Our members were not
disappointed. It was a Fast and Furious display, punctuated by
a delicious high tea, organised by Chairperson Yvonne. This
welcome break was well received by all to ease the tension,
and giving the quarter finalists, Beh, Lionel, Piao and Siong a spell before fighting out the titles.
The afternoon climaxed with a thrilling match between two
titans, with Lionel overcoming the final cliff hanger and snatching the title for the 1st Quarter. Congratulations to
Lionel, and look forward to you returning to defend the title in
the coming quarters. Congratulations to all the finalists, and thank you for putting on such an exciting match.
1st Place Lionel Lim Ying Kai
2nd Place Chuah Su Aik (Siong)
3rd Place Beh Ping Seng
4th Place Heng Wooi Piao

KARAOKE COMPETITION25 MAY 2019
The recently held Karaoke competition on 25.5.2019, initiated
and sponsored by our past Karaoke Chairman Mr. Robert
Yeoh, received tremendous response from members and
there were more than 30 participants.
Very much to the delight of all members who packed the
lounge almost to the brim, the singers belted out songs
splendidly well in tune with favourites of Elvis Presley and
Theresa Teng. Laughter and applause were created with the
appearance of 'female Elvis Presley ' and 'male Theresa Teng'.
The calibre and standard of singing were extremely high.

ANNUAL PREMIER INTER-CLUB TEAM COMPETITION 2019
SERVE ON TURF FUN TENNIS
After our successful outing last year, once again we
participated in the Annual Premier Inter-Club Team
Competition 2019. Held at the Penang Sports Club on 4th
and 5th May with a total number of 9 teams participating.
With the increase in the number of teams make the format
of play to be Knock-out System. Our first match were up against the Penang Sports Club Team A. Although we lost
With the new tennis courts re-opened with artificial turf, it was definitely time to organise a round of fun tennis for all the tennis enthusiasts. So on 22nd April, the group held their
first fun tennis event on turf. The attendance was superb with over 20 players turning up for the event. Although half way
through the event the rain drizzled heavily, it didn’t stop the
players from carrying on playing. This definitely proves that we have made the right choice to convert the tennis courts
into artificial turf. Overall, it was a memorable night as we also got the opportunity to celebrate one of the committee's
with overall score 0-3 but our first pair of Heng and Alvin did put up a good fight leading 6-5 before losing in the end. Meanwhile another pair of Wei Kah and Eric Wong managed
to lead at the beginning before losing. Our all junior pair of
Way Hang and Sze Liong lost as well to a more experience
pair that they meet.In the Tier 2 matches, we successfully
defeated Nibong Tebal Recreation Club to set up the Plate
Final versus Persatuan Tenis Melayu Pulau Pinang Team B.
First pair consist of Heng and Way Hang who successfully
defeated their opponent to put the team in front. However
our second pair of Alvin Lee and Lim Eng Ming lost to them
bringing the score to 1-1 level. With the outcome now rely on
our last pair of Jeffrey Peh and Sze Liong. With the support of
the team, they definitely didn’t let us down by beating there opponent narrowly. It was indeed a great combination with
Jeffrey supporting strongly of his partner while his partner
Sze Liong blast the ball to victory. So once again we were
crowned the Tier 2 Champion.
birthday. Finally, we would also like to take this opportunity
to thank Pusat Sukan Mercury for sponsoring the top prize
of the night.

SKY MIRRORContributed by: Dominic Boudville
People used to say, looking into a mirror shows your true self.
So for us yogis, we have to find out!
Sky Mirror at Bagan Datuk Perak was our destination. Why?
Because it’s supposed to be the place where pictures are a
true reflection of oneself.
On June 15-16, a bus load of us yogis took a trip to Sky Mirror,
and as usual, stop-overs at the best eating spots in Ipoh, and
we argued on who has the best Kopi O, Penang or Ipoh just
for the sake of arguing.
When we reached in the early evening we were pleasantly
surprised that the ‘kampong stay hostel’ has air conditioning,
plus an attached bath with water heater! Next was dinner,
which was steamboat with no limit top up except for prawns
and crabs, and everything was really fresh.
Then, we were off in a huge speed boat to see the Blue
Tears, or luminous sea creatures. The staff would scoop the
tiny creatures and place them on our hands; in our heads, we
could really hear the Avatar theme song playing.
Supper was next, followed by firefly watching, which was rather disappointing as urban development has destroyed
much of the fireflies' natural habitat so we saw only a handful far away...or were those street lights?
Sunday 16 June, no need to explain so much as the pictures
say it all.
We’re quite a colourful bunch of yogis, right?
