Terra Preta mit (gealtertem) biochar: wie alles begann….
• Increased soil nutrients (NPK), CEC, pH (Glaser 2001; Steiner et al., 2003)
• Improved WHC (Bsp. Glaser 2002), aeration or porosity (BD; Bsp. Oguntunde et al. 2005)
• Soil microbes: higher diversity (+25%, Kim et al. 2007; O'Neill et al. 2009), larger microbial
biomass and respiratory efficiency (e.g. Steiner et al. 2003, 2007)
Increased SOC stocks in addition to the black carbon
Recent biochar studies: limited number of publications (many: tropics)
• Positive effects on crop yield…
a)…with moderate fertilization (N, N-P-K, or organic) or with nutrient-rich BC
b)…on poor, degraded soils (sand > clay)(eg. Oguntunde et al. 2004; Chan et al. 2007, 2008; Steiner et al. 2008; Rondon et al. 2007,
Kimetu et al. 2008; Blackwell et al. 2010, Solaiman et al. 2010…..)
• Negative effects on crop yield without fertilization; BC application too low….(?)
