Dear Friends,

We are very proud to receive in Bari our colleagues coming from all over the world forthe "1st World Congress of Office Hysteroscopy and Resectoscopy - 1st AGUI ANNUALWORKSHOP ON ENDOSCOPY", which will be held from May 18th to 21st 2011.

This is the second time in which Bari will be the theatre for an International Meeting onGynecological Endoscopy, after the ISGE 2008 World Congress of Gynecologic Endoscopy. The University of Bari has always paid particular attention to the field of GynaecologicEndoscopy, becoming one of the International reference centers for Office Hysteroscopyand receiving many foreign trainees every year.

Office Hysteroscopy is not a new field. However, less attention has been paid to thisarea in meetings and congresses. Being an important part of gynaecological endoscopy,we have decided to focus on a topic that probably still need to be answered and on allthe new technological improvements and hot topics in this field. We aim to put togetherthe idea of a technical workshop together with a specialist congress.

The 1st day will be dedicated to technological improvements and hot topics in Hysteroscopyand Resectoscopy. New instruments and electronic devices will be presented for the firsttime. Televoting systems will be used to evaluate the general trend of opinions. The 2nd

and 3rd days will be dedicated to live surgery sessions from both office and operatingtheatre performed by International experts and junior surgeons. The trends of the audiencewill be discussed comparing the televoting results obtaining first and after live surgerysessions.A great number of experts will drive the discussion in the conference hall involving allthe participants by using a TV debate's model.

The last day will be fully dedicated to the "Hands-On" using many workstations for directtraining. This will be an occasion for both residents and junior doctors to get into thedifferent techniques assisted by experts.

This meeting will also be an occasion to taste the typical cuisine of this area and visitarchitectural and natural beauties of the Apulia region, which is famous for its sunnyweather, as well as warm and friendly people.

Welcome to Bari

President of the Congress Honorary PresidentProf. Stefano Bettocchi Prof. Luigi Selvaggi

May 21 HANDS-ON from 8.30 to 17.00

MODERATORSEach session will have a short introduction, made by one Speaker, focused on different opinionson specific issues, evaluating pros and cons of “office” instead of “operating room” setting. TheModerators will have the role to guide the discussion towards different ideas during the livesurgery and after that, using an approach similar to a “talk show”. Moderators will have a“dynamic” position in the room, not sitting at a table in front of the audience, but among theparticipants and walking through them, with a wireless ear microphone, to involve juniors andexperts in the debate. Televoting will help Moderators to evaluate changes in audience opinions, grade of simplicity and feasibility of surgical techniques, showed during live surgery.

SPEAKERSSpeakers should strictly observe speaking time (10 minutes).Only one speech will introduce the matter for each session, before live surgery, showing the“state of art”, based on recent literature, focusing on indications, techniques, instrumentations, complications, pros and cons of Office Hysteroscopy versus Resectoscopy, regardless of personalexperience.

I DayThanks to technological improvements, hysteroscopic surgery has played a rising and irreplaceablerole in “Women Health”, but there are still many open questions and “Hot Topics” to discusstogether, on “patient approach, economical impact, and training” regarding Office Hysteroscopy, and the risk of major “complications” regarding Resectoscopy.

II DayWe will begin approaching the “Infertile Patients” showing the role of Office Hysteroscopy asa powerful diagnostic and therapeutic tool in this field. Then we will focus on the “Septate Uterus”, a pathology with an important impact on woman’sfertility, showing first the hysteroscopic diagnostic criteria, then the surgical technique andinstruments for Office and Resectoscopic Metroplasty.Another topic of the day will be “Anatomical Impediments and Sinechiae”, a frequent challengein approaching postmenopausal patients in an office setting, pointing out simple tips and tricksto perform a successful procedure, avoiding unnecessary anesthesia and operating theatre. Finally the rest of the day will be all dedicated to “Myomas”, the most common pathologywhich requires gynecologist intervention, referring to indications and techniques for Office andResectoscopic approach.

III DayThis day will be focused on “Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding and Endometrial Ablation”, analternative approach to reduce the need of curettage and hysterectomy for patients nonresponders to medical treatment, showing different instrumentations and techniques available.Another disputed matter is the role of Hysteroscopy in the diagnosis and treatment of “EndometrialAbnormalities”, such as Hyperplasia and Cancer, in particular the risk of malignant cells spreadinto the abdominal cavity and the possibility to treat focal carcinoma, above all for patientswith high anesthesiological risk.“Tubal Sterilization” is another new application of the Office approach, avoiding unnecessaryhospitalization and major surgical interventions. The session will conclude with the controversial issue regarding “Polyps Removal”, in particularindications for Office or Resectoscopic surgery, technique and expedience of polypectomyregardless of patient’s symptoms and age.
