Dock Utilization
• Calculated as a percentage of time the dock is occupied vs. vacant vs. outage
• Outage Types– Within the terminal’s
control (dredging, jetty work)– Outside the terminal's control (weather,
tides)

How do you calculate dock utilization?• No standard calculation for utilization• Terminals calculate utilization in different
ways for operations and marketing• Utilization numbers will increase when
external outages times are excluded.

Dock Idle time• Idle time is an efficiency measurement of
vessel call management• Total time any vessel is alongside and not
transferring cargo• Reduction of idle time will decrease overall
dock utilization• Lower dock utilization = Increased opportunity
for more vessel calls

How to reduce dock idle time
• Benchmarking and Trending of KPIs–

Vessel Calls
• Idle time can occur in distinct periods of vessel call events–––

Logging your Events is the Key• Consistently identifying & recording vessel
call events is paramount
• Providing an easy, real-time method for event logging allows
quick reaction times
• Log both routine events and delays, both impact idle time

So how do I use this data?
• Promote friendly competition between shifts• Identify which shift is able to complete
routine events more efficiently• Transfer practices
from efficient shifts to others
• Compare Inspector call out times• Use results to strengthen dialogue with
inspection companies and customers

Delays count!• Focus attention where it can be best applied
• Pre, Transfer and Post Delays
• Terminal Delays• Customer Delays• Vessel Delays
• Identify most impactful delays and work to reduce these first

Demurrage, not my problem, right?• Public Terminals are not exposed to
demurrage.• Customers and Operators are.• All things being equal would a potential client
choose a relationship with a terminal who paid attention to demurrage over one who did not?

Who are the responsible stakeholders?
• Managing Idle time is every stakeholder’s responsibility

• After implementing our system, one terminal:• Decreased idle time by 8%• Saved $600K per site/annually
Is all this really worth it?
