Disadvantages of Using Internet Among University Student Malaysia

Jackson (2005) state that internet refers to the world wide connection of computer

network that allow a user to access information located anywhere else on the network. In less

than the decade, the internet has evolved from a technically curiosity to a major influence on

nearly aspect of life. he internet has !ecome social force, influencin" how, when, and why

people communication. In developed countries, the internet has truly !ecome a fi#ture of

everyday life. $o lon"er early the domain of technically advance %&reek' the internet has, for

many !ecome an indispensa!le tool for commerce, research, communication and leisure.

owever, there are several disadvanta"es of usin" the internet in our daily life, especially

amon" university students in alaysia. *astin" time, less concentration in study and addiction

are therefore, the disadvanta"es of usin" the internet.

+irstly, one of the disadvanta"es of usin" internet amon" the university students inalaysia is wastin" time. +or an e#ample internet is non productive time waster (-onner, 20 ).

/sually students start surfin" and reali e more time has passed then they think all the

information a!out their study is on the internet. 1o they do not "o to classes. In addition, internet

keeps students from the thin"s they want to do or "oals ( lderman, 20 ). -ommonly students

tend to do last minutes ha!its when doin" works or assi"nment. 3esides, this ha!it also makes

student4s works or assi"nments are less perfect. 1o they will su!mit their works late and

tendency to score low "rades are increases (&eor"e ason /niversity, n.d).

1econdly, another disadvanta"e of usin" the internet amon" the university students is

makin" them less concentrate in their study *eimer (20 as cited in 6u nekoff, 20 7).+or

those who are usually usin" the social networks such as 8face!ook4, 8whatsapp4 and others, their

studies are sli"htly distur!ed. he simplest e#ample for this pro!lem is students commonly

interrupted !y incomin" e mails or messa"es. hus, they like to reply the massa"e instantly.

ence, the concentration levels on their studies are decreasin". +urthermore, internet lead

students o!sess to the online "amin". /sually, the online "amin" is one of the ways for students

to release stress and enjoy for a moment. In contrast, online "amin" will lower down their

productivity spirit. endency to feel la y and tired when study are some of the result playin"

9ast !ut not least, the disadvanta"es of usin" internet amon" university students is

make them addicted to it. *hen students "ot addicted to internet, later on it will cause many

pro!lems with their social interactions. :ne of the e#ample, they feel more comforta!le with

their online friends compare to the real life one (1iew, 20 0). hey cannot stop playin" "ames,

"am!lin" or compulsively checkin" smart phone are some of the symptoms addiction to theinternet was occur. part from that, internet also lead students in cy!erse# addiction (Internet

ddiction and ;elationship, n.d.). +or an e#ample, usin" adult chatroom mostly "ives ne"ative

impact on student4s real life relationship. his virtual chatroom also makes students like to

cheatin" and slowly they try to practice it on their real life.

In conclusion, alaysian university students need to !uilt stron" individual self esteem,

hi"h in discipline and they should create time mana"ement to prevent wastin" time, less

concentration in study and addiction are therefore, si"nificantly the disadvanta"es of usin" the

internet amon" university students.
