Every city has several reasons for you to want to visit. Everyone is looking for someplace interesting to start a journey.

The process of choosing a city to visit is similar to fi nding a raisin in a muffi n. The more raisins in the muffi n, the tastier it is. Therefore, the more reasons you have to visit a city, the sooner you go there.

I have my humble opinions of why Batumi can be proud. I will try to list at least several of them to encourage you to visit Batumi. I am sure you have seen many cities built along seashores, but Batumi is completely different. You will be immediately convinced of the truthfulness of my words if you enter the city from the eastern side. Batumi is a peninsula on the Black Sea. It

Although it is true that the architecture in Batumi cannot boast about having 500-year-old fortresses and princely estates, you can see the history of the city on small streets. You can walk from the seashore to the neighbourhoods of old Batumi. The historical eclecticism dominates the architecture of old Batumi. Against the backdrop of modern and provoking architectural buildings, old houses of Polish, British, Greek, Russian and Azerbaijani merchants are in harmony with buildings of socialist realism and futurist architecture from the era of Stalin, Khrushchev and Brezhnev that are still inhabited

by people. The narrow, beautiful and refi ned buildings of old Batumi have on many occasions become a desirable site for foreign fi lm directors. Many movie characters have lived here and many historical scenes have been enacted in the streets of old Batumi. However, apart from movie characters, real people also live here. If your trip is not marred by rain, you may bump into a pile of laundry hanging outdoors, which is typical only for a sunny city. The pearl of old Batumi, Piazza, stands next to Italian courtyards. This is a key destination. It is among top fi ve most beautiful squares in the post-Soviet countries. Not only architecture, but cultures also merge here. In the

This is yet another confi rmation that people of different faiths and ethnic origins co-exist in a peaceful and comfortable atmosphere. When you stroll through the streets of old Batumi, remember that many poets, musicians and writers discovered their muses here. Therefore, get ready, you never know what is going to happen!

After walking around the streets, there will defi nitely come a moment when your body requires something apart from emotional food. This is one of the reasons for you to visit Batumi. You can eat Ajarian Khachapuri, which is included in top ten lists of foods highest in calories in the world. This is a good reason for you to visit renowned places in Batumi that serve Khachapuri Retro, Laguna (Lagoon) and Okros Gasaghebi (Golden Key). Although you can have Adjarian Khachapuri in other cities, it will

be the same mistake as eating pizza in Alaska. The unusual fusion of Laz and Mengrelian cuisines that are high in calories will make you forget everything that you have ever experienced or done. Only after several minutes, when you come to your senses, will you start realizing what your existence was before eating Ajarian Khachapuri and what it will be afterwards. You can even place a bet and if you are confi dent of your own capabilities, order a big portion of Khachapuri and those who fail to eat it fully will pay for the meal. Ajarian Khachapuri is a visiting card of Batumi that tourists have to try by all means. By eating it, you will start your journey through high-calorie food of western Georgia.

After such a fi lling meal, it is necessary to take a walk. Traffi c congestion and traffi c jams are a problem in almost every city. Although there are some traffi c jams in the streets of Batumi, it offers a very good alternative bikes and cycling routes. I do not think that touring around Batumi by car will give you the

Her coffee was so famous that people used to travel from various cities to taste it. When she died, the whole city came to her funeral ceremony to bid farewell. The history of Batumi is affi liated with trade. Its safe port was the main factor that turned a small settlement into the city of Batumi. In the early 19th century, ships carrying salt, iron, soap and fabrics docked in the port and intensive trade was underway. The number of ships increased every year and a 2,000-resident settlement gradually turned into a small town. Wooden cabins were replaced by stone buildings, and the streets were extended. When Batumi Porto Franco -- became a free port, the world's oil tycoons, such as the Rothschilds, Nobel brothers and Alexander Mantashev started shipping oil to and from the port. Batumi gained international importance. A large number of the historical buildings were built between 1890-1940. Many buildings have been preserved and enable tourists to travel through time.

A BOARDING SCHOOL FOR BOYS

Not many people get a view of the sea from university windows, with dolphins jumping out of the water in the early spring, but students at Batumi State University are lucky to have it. Not many cities have universities located on a boulevard stretching along the seashore. However, the history of this building started at a time when instead of tree lanes there was the sea, and fi ne drops of the waves used to hit the windows of the building. The archives preserve several old photos showing the area where the boulevard is today covered by the sea, and the signboard fixed to the external wall of the building that used to say that it was a boarding school for boys. Schoolboys dressed in blue uniforms were the tenants

Batumi was built in 1903 and was one of the most expensive buildings at that time. It has marble stairs, columns and a hall. There was a church inside the building. Although a tuition fee was charged by the boarding school, the caretakers board led by the Japanese consul was helping talented and vulnerable children.

The issue of opening a boarding school for boys was put on the agenda in 1893. The local government allotted a land plot for the boarding school near the seashore in 1895. It was not a prestigious area at that time. There was a prison next to the boarding school and in the 1910s, when Batumi was swept by a revolutionary wave, the schoolchildren could hear

protesters chanting outside the prison. The fi rst boarding school of Batumi has

seen and resisted many scenes of unrest since its establishment. In 1918, when the Ottomans entered Batumi, the boarding school was occupied by servicemen. In 1920, the boarding school was turned into a military unit by the British troops. However, that did not last long. The Englishmen soon handed over Batumi and its nearby districts to Mensheviks. In 1921, the Soviet Army entered Batumi. The boarding school was turned into the Mikhailov boarding school and then a pedagogical college. It gained the status of university in 1990. It was said at that time that this was the only building that managed to preserve educational functions. The sea water also retreated a long time ago.

CATHOLIC CHURCH

At the end of the 19th century in Batumi, the area where stands one of the most distinguished architectural buildings Holy Mother Virgin Nativity Cathedral was a swamp. In winter, the swamp would be packed with wild birds and it was a beloved place for hunters. It was bordered by dense forests and was quite dangerous to walk, Georgian writer Davit Kldiashvili wrote.

At that time, the Batumi Catholic parish decided to build a church. They started collecting three roubles from every family and managed to gather 1,500 roubles in a month. Certainly, this was not enough. It was spent only to dry out the swamp. They decided to apply to Georgian Catholic

merchant Stepane Zubalashvili for help. He immediately sent 15,000 roubles to Batumi and the construction of the church began. The church is designed in a Gothic style, has three domes and is decorated with ornaments. Italian architects worked on the design of the building. The church was inaugurated in 1903 and Catholic bishop Eduard von der Ropp, who arrived from Rome on this occasion, anointed the church and it was presented to the Catholic parish of Batumi as a gift. Tsnobis Purtseli (Messenger) newspaper printed a picture taken during the anointing. It featured Batumians dressed in festive outfits standing outside the church. The church was so beautiful that people used to go there just to see it.

During Soviet times, the church was turned into the archives and then a high voltage laboratory. In the 1990s, repair works were carried out and was handed over to the Orthodox parish.

If you walk through the eastern entrance of the church, you will see an inscription on a plate that says the following: I, Stepane Konstantine (patronymic) Zubalashvili, built this Holy Mother Virgin Nativity Cathedral with its fences for the blessing of my soul. The street nearby the church is named after Stepane Zubalashvili.

Abashidze streets. The front of the building is decorated with statues. This building was built by Batumian merchant Nikoloz Sabashvili (Sabayev) on Maria Street (currently Abashidze Street). Sabashvili was a well-known fi gure in Batumi, a powerful and rich man. He earned a fortune in Batumi, the city known as the land of promise for merchants.

The three-story building, constructed in the Renaissance-Barroco style, had a central entrance from Konstantine Gamsakhrudia street, which was named after Russian general and statesman Alexander Dondukov- Korsakov in the early 20th century.

After the Sovietization, the house was confi scated from the family of Nikoloz Sabashvili along with stores and other property he owned. This house has been put on the cultural heritage list.

Other buildings in Batumi do not have statues on the front of the building, a dome decorated with fi ns, and Corinthian half-columns and other ornaments. Iakob Nikoladze's student, prominent sculptor Serapime Pololikashvili, took part in the original design of this building. He moved from Kutaisi to Batumi at the beginning of the 19th century. He designed fi gures and ornaments on the front side of the building.

A city legend of the 1920s is associated with the Sabashvili house. It is said that the owner of the house, Nikoloz Sabashvili, stored gold in the statues. However, this is a legend. In reality the talented merchant, who owned houses, shops, warehouses and factories in Batumi, had everything confiscated by the Soviet authorities. His granddaughter Beatrice Sabashvili wrote

in her memoirs that when her affectionate grandfather, who until recently was considered as one of the richest men of Batumi, arrived in Tbilisi from Batumi to see his grandchildren, he brought a kitten in a basket as he had nothing else to bring.

ONE-STORY BUILDINGS IN BATUMI

Batumi was not constructed as a tourist resort. Old Batumi was a small, colorful trading city stretched along the port of Batumi and there were only one-, two- and three-story buildings and narrow streets. Trade was so important for the city that a foreign writer noted that the currency exchange rate pulsates in the artery of Batumians.

The number of one-story buildings has reduced over the past 10 years and they have been replaced with multi-story buildings. One-story Batumi is gradually disappearing. However, you still have a chance to turn a stroll through the historic streets in Old Batumi as an adventure.

If you are interested in the visual side of Old Batumi, stroll through the streets of Gamsakhurdia, Kutaisi, Kldiashvili, Parnavaz Mepe, Dumbadze and the narrow streets in the heart of the city. The architecture of these streets was strictly regulated the height of buildings should not exceed the width of streets. Small buildings there still have their distinctive and cozy style preserved.

Small one-story buildings emerged in Batumi at the end of the 19th century. Some of them were used for trade, some for residences. If you take a close look at these buildings, you will notice that the front sides are facing the streets. If the buildings have stained-glass windows, it means that they had been used for trade purposes. Some of them still maintain this function.

A century ago, life was as busy and full in this area as it is now. Merchants would open their shops in the early hours and offer the best quality goods to buyers. Coffee shops situated nearby would serve the local people and tourists with coffee and they would sip it slowly.

The Batumi backyard stories project has been carried out in Batumi during summers for four years. Short stories about small courtyards in the city depict the history of Batumi and its culture, refl ecting the genuine character of the city. It is presented by the Micro-Foni organization. This public art project enables artists to express these stories in the language of modern art and communicate them to the public using various forms. Multimedia artists from different countries take part in this annual unique street exhibition. They gather in one of the streets of old Batumi and tell the stories of Batumi backyards in the presence of the residents of these backyards. It is an essential part of Batumis cultural life.

Georgian food is a mixture of distinct regional cuisines. For instance, Ajarian cuisine offers a wide range of choices, but it is dominated by sweets and dairy products. Ajarian Baklava is the most pristine pastry. Traditionally, it is cooked in large quantities and served at festive cer-emonies. It is an essential pastry at Ajarian weddings. There was an old tradition in Ajara that when a girl was to get married, the parents of the bride-to-be would visit the family of the future groom and would bring Baklava and Shakar Lama (cardamom cookies) in baskets. This tradition has changed, but Baklava has preserved its importance and it is still in demand at parties.

I am from Batumi. I grew up in a courtyard typical for Batumi. The address is 1 Gorky Street [named after Soviet writer Maxim Gorky]. This street has been renamed many times, but it is still known as Gorky Street. Just like Plekhanov street [named after Russian revolutionary and Marxist theoretician Georgi Plekhanov] in Tbilisi, the old name has not been rooted out.

The house where I grew up stands on two streets. Actually, two houses standing side-by - side form a courtyard where Georgians, Greeks, Armenians, Russians and Ukrainians used to live. They used Russian and Georgian languages to communicate. The command of other languages was often required. These cultures met in this courtyard.

Culture implies proper behaviour. Showing respect towards other cultures is a sign of strength as opposed to weakness. The sign of multiculturalism is when you understand other

cultures. I spent my childhood surrounded by various cultures. For instance, if someone died in the neighborhood, a tent would be set up in this courtyard and it would defi nitely have a multicultural accent because people of other ethnic groups lived there and they would take part. Pilau would be cooked by an Azerbaijani rather than by a Georgian, because this would make him proud.

The command of a language is necessary to co-exist in a multicultural society. For instance, the grandmother of my wife knew many languages Turkish with her own twist, Greek, Georgian and other. No, she was not a scholar, but she took it for granted.

It is obvious that you love Georgians, but you need to explain why you love Armenians. I do not fi nd it diffi cult to understand this as I grew up in this environment. However, there are some people raised in mono-cultural environments. When they go to big cities they may feel themselves as outsiders as they do not speak other languages to communicate with people of other ethnic origins, and ignorance causes mistakes.

All cultures can degrade and even disappear, but food is the last stand of culture. If a man likes Kachapuri, he can still be considered Georgian. Is a man likes [Armenia dry spicy sausage] sujuk, he can be considered as Armenian. If a man has no language, nor does he have [the Georgian poem] The Knight in the Panthers Skin or does not feel affection to khachapuri or cannot understand the cultural unity then he is diminished.

Once, when I worked in the non-governmental sector, Azerbajani and Armenian journalists came to visit us. We took them to eat Adjarian Khachapuri. The Azerbaijani put on pepper. A Georgian colleague scolded him that he could not do so. However, he did not understand. We feel offended as we do not want our culture to be wrongly understood because it is sacred for us.

Then we traveled to Baku. They invited us for a dinner. They served fried sturgeon and explained how we should eat it. It should be eaten with Narsharab, a sweet pomegranate dressing. But a Georgian man ate it with sour plum sauce. The Azerbaijani man put his hand to his heart. I told him that we felt the same

when he put pepper on Khachapuri. Culture is so sensitive that people worry about pepper being put on Khachapuri. However, when there is respect, a man is welcomed along with his own culture. You do not say that you are good when you speak Georgian, cross yourself and go to my church. But you are good because you welcome others the way they are.

I live with my friend in Kutaisi. Rent prices rocketed there after Parliament was moved [from Tbilisi] to Kutaisi. It is not affordable for a man to rent a fl at by himself without sharing. My roommate is a member of the parish and keeps fasts. This means that I do not disturb him when he is fasting and do not fry anything

at home. It works in every culture. Being cultural implies compromise. A city is a place to go where there are compromises. Batumi never saw any serious ethnic confl ict, because this city never belonged only to us.

Batumi is the city of soft relationships compared to Kutaisi. In Kutaisi a man is either your friend or arch-enemy because it has the culture of wine, while Batumi is more inclined to beer. Batumi has soft links typical for a civil society and this lightness makes it different from other cities.

I spent 45 years of my life in Tbilisi. My house is there and I actually live there. I lived 16 years in Batumi. Every time I am in Batumi

I feel at home and this is what makes Batumi different from Tbilisi. Batumi is a real city and the natives of Batumi are people of higher values compared to the residents of other cities as they show respect to other cultures. This is the wealth of this city in addition to paved streets.

This is a retro city to me - my memory cherishes the mix of new and old. The place which now houses Privet iz Batuma cafe is a photo studio to me, where I had my fi rst photos taken. There is a caf across the street, which used to be a bakery, a bank building that used to be a publishing house, and the house of my classmate Mzia Artmeladze next to it. This

is Batumi to me. As long as my generation is alive, it will remain so.

The only thing I do not do here is visit the courtyard where I grew up. The smell of the city has changed slightly. In my childhood, it was full of the smell of marijuana. I remember the time when I used to go the boulevard with friends and look for cigarette butts; I recall places famous for their Khachapuri At that time, Restaurant Ajaria was considered very fashionable. They served wonderful coffee on the third fl oor and Ajarian Khachapuri on the ground fl oor. Restaurant Batumi was its rival. Then, years later, restaurant Gemo was opened as well as Blagoevgrad [named after

the Bulgarian city] and a Khachapuri place at the railway station which became popular very quickly. I recall phrases that we boys used to say ,,put butter in it''.

Batumi as a city was established on multicultural basis. This city was created in the 19th century by the oil industry, which attracted those people who needed the port. Batumi was by far a more important city then than it is now. It was a big oil refi nery hub which was known throughout the world. There were offi ces in Batumi and such famous people as Siemens, Nobel and Rothschilds lived there. This business environment allowed people to understand each other. When there is a lack of

multicultural relations, it turns into other type of place rather than a city.

A city has many defi nitions, but the most serious above all is that a city is a place where cultures complement each other rather than annihilate or destroy each other. If one culture succeeds and all others die, it becomes a village rather than a city. It is also believed that a city should have a port. Taking into account everything said above, Batumi is the most distinguished city of Georgia.

HISTORY OF AJARIAN KHACHAPURI Khachapuri (the origin of the word comes from cheese bread) is one of the most

popular foods in Georgian cuisine. It came to existence along with the Georgian culture. Khachapuri used to be served only at festive events, but now it has become a typical food across the country. There are different types of Khachapuri Imeretian, Mengrelian, Habizgini/Habizgina, Ajarian, Laz and others.

According to legends, it was Laz fi shermen who cooked Ajarian Khachapuri for the fi rst time. They made the dough in the shape of a boat and put in cheese and a yellow egg yolk. There are different methods of cooking for different regional types of Khachapuri, while the ingredients are almost the same.

The Ajarian Khachapuri is usually made of wheat fl our, yeast, water, a little milk and salt. Eggs and butter are added when it is baked.

There are several types of Ajarian Khachapuri crispy and cheesy and with beans or ham stuffed inside.

You should not leave the city of Batumi and Ajaria without tasting Ajarian Khachapuri. For that reason, you can go to Lagoon Restaurant.

Among the exhibits displayed in Batumi, stone tools discovered in the mountains of Ajaria are ancient ones that date back to 300,000-400,000 years ago. Green Lake is situated in the mountains of Ajaria at an altitude of 1,058 meters in the vicinity of the Goderdzi Pass in the north-ern section of the Arsiani range. Visitors are welcome to travel to the lake in late spring, summer and early autumn. The road leading to the lake is closed in winter because of snow that often reaches up to 4 meters at the Goderdzi Pass. Green Lake is stun-ningly beautiful in autumn. The Beshumi resort is located near the lake. The resort is a mixture of old-fashioned wooden sum-mer cabins and state-of-the-art cottages. The cabins are located in spruce woods. Various legends suggest that there is a good climate for treating respiratory diseases. If you happen to be in foggy Beshumi, you will never forget this landscape.

MERISI GORGE

Merisi Gorge is one of the most beautiful places in Ajar-ia with the rich greenery and architecture of its villages. Epic folk tales have been preserved in Merisi Gorge. KINTRISHI NATURE RESERVE, PROTECTEDAREAS OF KOBULETI

Kintrishi Nature Reserve is located in Kintrishi valley in Kobuleti municipality. It is a must-see place in Ajaria. Tourists pass over an arched stone bridge en route to the reserve. Waterway boat tours as well as ethnographic, ecological and bird watching tours are also available in Kin-trishi Nature Reserve. There are two rivers Tbikeli and Didvaketi -- in the nature reserve. The Sidzerdzali river also fl ows nearby.

As for preserved areas, there is a national park to the north of the town of Kobuleti, about 300 meters from the Pichvnari eco-beach. There is the unique Sphagnum white moss that forms a low layer of cloud during heavy rains. When there is a 100mm rainfall per day, a sphagnum dome stretched over an area of 300 hectares can expand by 25cm and absorb a large amount of water. Water skis are needed to move across the peat land. They are available for rent at a visi-tors centre in Kobuleti.

CHIRUKHI Similar to Beshumi, Chirukhi is also a summer resort. Summer is the busy

season in this place. Usually women who take cattle to pastures visit Chirukhi and stay there for three months. They make delicious dairy products and sell them to make ends meet during long winters. There are also wooden cabins. If you like adventure tourism, this is the place to be. There are spruce stands near the cabins. The howl of wolves and growl of jackals is heard so loudly at night that you may think that they are right next to you. You may also bump into a brown bear before dusk, but he will bypass you growling and disappear into the forest. It is possible to travel from Chirukhi to Beshumi by crossing Tetrobi Pass. There is the Shuamta highland at the bottom of Tetroba Mountain. It takes two days to make the trip from Chirukhi to Beshumi.
