FROM THE DESK OF OUR COLLEGE PRINCIPAL Values Program The teachers and leaders at Baden Powell College take seriously the responsibility to reinforce values that we expect to see in and around our two schools. The value that we place a focus on in the month of May is Self‐Awareness and the catch phrase is “If it’s going to be it’s up to me”. The themes that we teach related to this topic include confidence, resilience, self‐discipline, conflict resolu on, anger management, effec ve listening, perseverance and personal best. We want our students, your children to have a posi ve self‐image and awareness of their talents, strengths and a ributes. We talk about effec ve decision making and always seeking to solve problems to achieve a construc ve and peaceful solu on. We want to ins l in each student confidence that should they always work to their personal best then gradual improvement over me will happen and that this is very sa sfying. You can help at home by ensuring that you give your child a chance to succeed by expec ng them to do jobs around the house and then recognising the effort shown, and, improvement over me. Our Diversity Our Strength On Friday the 26th of May, the last day of Educa on Week, we have a special day of Celebra on planned for all the families in our College. Across our College community we have 56 different languages spoken other than English. We believe that this glorious cultural diversity is our strength as an educa onal organisa on and will spend a day acknowledging and celebra ng this. We invite you to a end for part of, or the whole day! We hope to see everyone in na onal costume, involved in our longest lunch whilst sampling foods from many countries, enjoying spor ng events, performances and classroom ac vi es. We are asking people to come and tell their story, to learn a dance from another country and to take away a wristband as a permanent memento of the day of celebra on. Celebra on in Year 7‐9 The Year 7‐9 Team are having, what I hope will be, the first of many Apprecia on Days on Friday the 28th of April at 3pm in the Arts Centre. Students in the years 7‐9 who have received perfect progress reports, based on effort and behaviour in Term 1, and who have submi ed all of their Common Assessment Tasks, are coming together to celebrate this achievement. This is a wonderful new ini a ve and I am sure the families in a endance will be very proud of their children. Open Day I wanted to let you know that we have an Open Day on next Saturday, the 6th of May where people who are interested in enrolling a child at Baden Powell College can come along to have a tour of the two schools and to meet with the Assistant Principals and myself. The Tarneit Campus will be open from 10am‐12 noon and Derri‐mut Heath will be open from 1pm to 2pm. I will look forward to seeing all interested people and encourage you to let your neighbours and friends know these details if they live close to either school. Parents & Friends Once again, the hard working members of the Parents & Friends are organising stalls at both of our schools to sell small gi s for children to purchase for Mother’s Day. I do love to see the big smiles on the faces of the chil‐dren as they purchase that special gi for their mother. The stalls will be happen on Tuesday the 9th of May at Derrimut Heath and on Thursday the 11 at the Tarneit Campus. Assistant Principal Lesley Besanko At the end of Term One Lesley Besanko was successful in securing a new posi on as an Assistant Principal at a school closer to her home. Lesley spent many years with us at Baden Powell College, taking on a range of responsibili es, forming many posi ve rela onships with students, colleagues and families and we will miss her great work ethic. I am sure you join with me in wishing Lesley well in the future. A Final Word During the last week, some teachers raised a concern, about a program on Ne lix called 13 Reason Why. I did publish on Compass some informa on related to this and would just encourage you to check the ra ng on programs that your children watch and be aware of the content in the movies and programs that are available. Yours in Educa on, Looking Forward, Staying Ahead, ]âÄ|x `táÉÇ College Principal

Year 10’s se ling in… We have had 180 Year 10 students join Tarneit Senior College this year. Our biggest cohort yet and the first group from Tarneit P‐9 College! Earlier this month we had an exci ng excursion to Adventure Park where the Year 10’s were able to have fun in a relaxed se ng. As part of Year 10 English they meet well known author Alice Pung and learnt about her life. The Year 10 also had their first Athle cs Carnival taking part in all events, or Funle c events for those who are not so ‘sporty’. You are never too old for an egg and spoon race. And last, but not least, all Year 10s have been focusing on their academic studies and adap ng to the rigours of Senior School. It has been great to see the students ge ng to know each other.
