Nigeria abductions: Michelle Obama 'outraged’US First Lady Michelle Obama said her family was "outraged and heartbroken”

US First Lady Michelle Obama has said the mass kidnap of Nigerian schoolgirls is part of a wider pattern of threats and intimidation facing girls around the world who pursue an education.

She said she and her husband Barack Obama were "outraged and heartbroken" over the abduction on 14 April of more than 200 girls from their school.

She was speaking instead of her husband in the weekly presidential address.

The Islamist militant group Boko Haram has claimed the abductions.

Call to action’

Mrs Obama, who was speaking ahead of Mother's Day in the US on Sunday, said the girls reminded her and her husband of their own daughters.

"What happened in Nigeria was not an isolated incident. It's a story we see every day as girls around the world risk their lives to pursue their ambitions," she said.

She cited the Pakistani schoolgirl and campaigner Malala Yousafzai, who was shot and wounded by the Taliban for speaking out for girls' education.

"The courage and hope embodied by Malala and girls like her around the world should serve as a call to action," Mrs Obama said.

It is unusual for a US first lady to make outspoken foreign policy remarks, but Mrs Obama has campaigned for the girls' release.

Michelle Obama has often appeared alongside her husband during the weekly address, which is broadcast on radio with a video version available online. This is the first time she has delivered the speech alone.

Earlier this week, she tweeted a picture of herself in the White House holding a sign with the message "#BringBackOurGirls".

The UN Security Council expressed outrage over the abductions, saying it would consider "appropriate measures" against Boko Haram. The US is seeking to have UN sanctions imposed on the group.

Western help

A small number of US and British experts have arrived in Nigeria to assist with rescue efforts.

A senior US official said Washington was also considering a Nigerian request for surveillance aircraft.

British High Commissioner Andrew Pocock said drones could help gather intelligence but urged caution.

He told the BBC's Today programme: "The eye in the sky, even if it were able to be focused on the spot, isn't a panacea."

Traditional hunters armed with bows and arrows and old-fashioned shotguns are ready to enter the forest where the girls are thought to be held, local officials in Borno state have told the BBC's Mark Doyle.

They say 400 to 500 men have gathered but their departure is not imminent - they still hope the army will step up its efforts.

Our correspondent says it is a sign of Nigerians' frustration with the lack of progress in the search for the girls.

Boko Haram has admitted capturing the girls, saying they should not have been in school and should get married instead.

Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is forbidden" in the Hausa language, began its insurgency in Borno state in 2009.

At least 1,200 people are estimated to have died in the violence this year alone.

The divisions behind the Ukraine crisisThe US and EU have imposed economic sanctions on Russia over its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

Russian and Crimean leaders signed a treaty absorbing the peninsula into the Russian Federation following a disputed referendum .

The crisis has exposed deep divisions in Ukrainian society - between the European-facing west and the Russian-facing east.

Explore the maps and graphics below to find out more.

Why is Crimea so important? The region, a peninsula on the Black Sea coast of Ukraine, is of political and strategic significance to both Russia and Ukraine. The majority of Crimea's 2.3 million population identify themselves as ethnic Russians and speak Russian - a legacy of Russia's 200-year involvement in the region.

Russia's Black Sea Fleet has its historic base in the Crimean coastal city of Sevastopol - a continuing source of tension. After Ukraine gained independence, a leasing agreement was drawn up to allow the fleet to continue operating from there.

In 2010, this lease was extended to 2042 in exchange for Russia supplying discounted natural gas.

What ethnic groups live in Ukraine and Crimea?

Frictions between Ukraine and Russia escalated dramatically in November last year after the then pro-Moscow President Viktor Yanukovych abandoned an EU deal in favor of stronger ties with Russia. He fled Ukraine in February after violent protests in the country's capital Kiev.Later, Kremlin-backed forces effectively seized control of Crimea and, in a subsequent referendum; the region declared 97% of voters backed joining Russia and leaving Ukraine.

The divisions within Ukraine go back much further than recent events. The country has been torn between east and west since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and this is reflected in a cultural and linguistic divide.

Russian is widely spoken in parts of the east and south. In some areas, including the Crimean peninsula, it is the main language.

In western regions - closer to Europe - Ukrainian is the main language and many of the people identify with Central Europe.

This division is to some extent reflected in voting patterns. The areas where a significant proportion of people speak Russian almost exactly match those that voted for Mr.Yanukovych, as opposed to his rival and former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko in 2010.

Crimea is particularly Russian-facing in terms of its language andethnicity.

According to the 2001 Ukraine census, while most Ukrainians identified themselves as Ukrainian, most residents of Crimea identified themselves as ethnic Russians.

What ties does Ukraine have with Russia and the EU?Ukraine has economic ties to both the EU and Russia.Russian gas pipelines to Europe pass through Ukraine - a fact made abundantly clear in 2006 when Russia briefly cut supplies, sparking alarm in Western Europe.

Ukraine imports most of its oil from Russia - although recent discoveries of shale gas in the country mean it may become less dependent on Russian supplies in future.

There is also oil and gas fields in the Black Sea, which the government in Kiev had hoped to be able to exploit in order to further reduce its dependence on Russian imports.

Crimea's main water supply comes through Ukraine. The region's climate is dry and warm and most of its rivers and streams dry up in summer, so most of its water supplies come from the Dnieper River via the North Crimean Canal. Share from BBC

encounters a rainy day

The annual sports meeting of our university is currently in full swing.

However, the rain caught us on the hop, and students opened all kinds of umbrellas to shield themselves from the steady downpour, which turned the playground into a multicolored ocean. It's said that where is a sports meeting in our university, there is bound to be a heavy rain. Some students even jokingly remark that the sports meeting of SWUPL is the rite of praying for rain and quite effect ive for that matter ( I wouldn't tell you that never have I known it could be held on time in such a heavy rain.)

Though the weather wasn't very f ine, the students were very excited anyway and the entire campus was alive. The opening ceremony was so wonderful that the crowd broke into thunderous rounds of applauses. The radio calisthenics c o m p e t i t i o n , m a r t i a l a r t a n d t a e k w o n d o performance brought the entire show to a climax.

However, in spite of the jokes about untimely rain during the annual sports event, most of us on the campus are well aware of the importance of regular physical exerc ise. Only by keeping ourselves healthy and strong, can we feel energetic and vigorous in studying and working so that we can live a happy life. So, rain or shine, I hope my fellow college students can exercise regularly while studying hard.

Occupying Seats

In English, there is an expression “First Come, First Served” (FCFS). This stresses the need for orderliness, which also applies to college students' searching for seats in the reading rooms of a library. However, in China, things are somehow complicated. Instead of occupying seats with their own persons, students tend to use books, backpacks or other personal objects to stand for their “legitimate” ownership of the seats.

To such extent, the emergence of such a practice, now almost ubiquitous on all campuses, is justified. The seats for students to conduct self-study are limited and university authorities should endeavor to increase such facilities to satisfy students' needs. At least, students' efforts to fight for seats indicate they are enthusiastic about their studies—their academic initiatives should be duly recognized and encouraged! However, using personal belongings to occupy seats may exacerbate the scarcity of facilities—some irresponsible students might never turn up, sometimes even for days. They waste the precious resources and damage the interests of other students who have real needs. Such behavior deserves unconditional criticism and condemnation.

Both university authorities and students should do their best to solve the problem. The authorities should create more reading rooms to satisfy students' needs whereas students should not waste the already limited resources. In this way, an optimum allocation of resources can be realized and all students would enjoy their studies

“A thousand-mile journey

begins with a single step,” as the saying goes. However, what it doesn’t tell us is that once the journey is started, it might be hard to stop...................................That’s the case for Tang Renli, a senior at Nanjing University of Technology, who has backpacked to more than 200 cities in China during four years of college.

To share his experiences, Tang has hosted a photo exhibition Play Hooky, Go Travel at the Beijing 798 Art Zone. On display are over 300 photos of his travels.

“It’s a commemoration of my trips as well as a graduation gift to myself,” Tang said.

The 22-year-old never thought of going to so many places when he completed his first trip to Yangzhou during the Tomb Sweeping Day holiday in his freshman year.

From then on he was hooked on travel. “There was a strange yet fresh feeling that I’ve never felt before,” Tang said. “It’s curiosity that keeps me exploring new places.”

You may wonder how Tang could find the time, being a full-time college student. Did he really skip classes to go travel, like the title of his exhibition suggests?

“I gave myself one to two weeks every month for travel. But I always took care of my class and assignments first,” Tang said.

“I spent more time and effort on my study, especially during the finals’ weeks,” Tang said. “But thinking of traveling afterwards was my biggest motivation.”

Schoolwork was not the only obstacle Tang had to confront. His travel budget was limited, so Tang had to make the most of what he had.

There were also times when he walked, hitchhiked, and slept in train stations, police offices and vans.

“Sometimes I felt lonely, helpless and even found myself in danger,” Tang said. “But now that I look back, these setbacks enriched my journey, and my life.”

Thanks to the hard times, Tang now has more stories to tell.

“People often ask me what kind of advice I can give to those who want to do the same,” Tang said. “Don’t think too much about the uncertainties because you’ll cross that bridge when you get to it.”

“And once you take your first step, the feeling is amazing and addictive.”

You who came from the stars

All of a sudden, beer and fried chicken this seemingly unorthodox combo went viral on the tables of many dorms and in weibo and wechat updates. Do you know why? Thanks to a South Korean drama currently on air, You Who Came From the Stars, this new mix-and-match junk food trend has become popular among young audiences, despite its unhealthy nature. Why are lots of people so crazy about this drama?

1. Creative Plot

Do Min-Joon is an alien who landed on Earth 400 years ago during the Joseon Dynasty period. Do Min-Joon possesses a near perfect appearance and enhanced physical abilities involving his vision, hearing and speed. Do Min-Joon holds a cynical view to human beings, but he falls in love with actress Cheon Song-Yi.

You Who Came From the Stars challenges this norm by integrating aliens and time travel into these existing narrations. Ma ke, from sohu.com says," That gives a sense of freshness to people

who just want to know how everything is sorted out in such an impossible plot."

2. Pretty faces and fashion

Everyone fancies a perfect partner, handsome or beautiful. The south Korean TV industry is feeding this need.

It reinforces the fantasy among young people with faces designed for viewers across the spectrum: the next door girl; the rebellious, sophisticated woman; the mature gentleman; little-brother faces. You name it.Idol making keeps updating the fantasies among fans and it intentionally caters to each generation's tastes.Apart from pretty faces, fashion is another highlight of the series. Each time actors from the series wear a new set of outfits.3. Songful OSTThe OST usually accompany with the climax and can be stirring.

Here are some comments I got from Asian WiKi.R K M - - - - - I r e a l l y l o v e i t t h i s story...thumbs up...I hope to have part 2...I don't know it but I really enjoying watching Korean series and movie....helna yusof-----SUPER DAEBAK!!!! love this drama so much than stupid The Heirspriboo------i love this show, i have been watching it like from one week now and i just love it it is funny(cheon song yi) and the the same time romantic(lee whin kyung)i have finished watching the show and i fell so sad, is like i want to watch it forever. this is a must watch show.yullie------D.A.E.B.A.K...!!!! Two thumbs up.......excellent.....good job........DMJ-CSY------not only best drama in

2 0 1 4 . I T ' S T H E B E S T D R A M A EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From the above, we can know, indeed, south Korean TV dramas have been a major force in the south Korean pop-culture wave that has captured the hearts of young Chinese audiences. According to iqiyi, You Who Came From the Stars currently records having over 2 billion hits on iqiyi's Pay Per Series service, setting the highest number for any dramas serviced by the website in China, where the drama claimed four out of five hot topics spots on TV and sina weibo. All in all, no matter what, Korean dramas are just entertainment, not the whole of life, so to the Korean dramas, only in the spirit of entertainment not really get into them.On the other side, the Korean dramas hitting the Chinese TV productions can offer us a lesson to learn. Chinese TV screens are flooded by knock-off and poorly made soap operas. Chinese can use the success of Korean dramas as

e x a m p l e s , a s w e l l a s inspiration, to improve their production
