Through BabsonARTS, the College has a unique ability to bring focus through the arts to issues of importance in business and society today: the consequences of climate change, hunger in America, social justice, the qualities of effective leadership. This semester we will welcome to campus a roster of visual artists, performers, writers, and arts entrepreneurs who will share their insights and perspectives as we come together to experience events that are both entertaining and enlightening.

THEATRE IN THE ROUGH:

DEATH AND THE MAIDEN STARRING COTE DE PABLO AND PEDRO PASCAL

Irresistible revenge. After the fall of the totalitarian regime in a South American country, a former political prisoner finds herself face-to-face with the man she believes was her captor. Is he guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, or is her paranoia getting the better of her? Featuring Chilean actors Cote de Pablo (NCIS) and Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones and Narcos). Theatre in the Rough is a script-in-hand reading series presented without common theatrical elements like sets or costumes. These pared-down readings uniquely engage the audience by immersing them in the immediacy of the text and the actors’ performances, allowing one’s own imagination to take creative flight. Seating is extremely limited, and reservations are required.

Behind the scenes with Pedro Pascal. HBO’s multiple Emmy award-winning series Game of Thrones is a favorite of both critics and audiences. We’ll look at excerpts from the series, and get some behind-the-scenes insights from Pedro Pascal about his experiences as Oberyn Martell in episodes in 2014.

ABOUT COMMONWEALTH SHAKESPEARE COMPANYBest known for Free Shakespeare on the Boston Common, seen by more than 75,000 patrons every summer, Commonwealth Shakespeare Company (CSC) has brought many of its productions to Babson since being named Theatre in Residence in 2013. In addition to professional full-scale productions of Shakespeare’s classics, CSC presents readings, discussions, and programs both in Boston and on the Babson campus. Whether it’s a contemporary drama with nationally-known actors or a Shakespeare reading by business leaders, CSC productions are always modern, relevant, and innovative.

REMEDIATION WORKS BY AZADEH TAJPOUR BASED ON FOUND FOOTAGE AND ARCHIVAL PHOTOS

The space between us and the other. Azadeh Tajpour is interested in the ways we receive and perceive information, especially the lenses through which we look at “others” exploring the gray area between “us” and “other”. To this end, the artist uses video stills from an American drone in Afghanistan as a source for drawings; stills from found video of the 2009–10 upheaval in Iran become the basis for paintings; and archival photos are layered on top of each other to highlight their original contradictory captions. Though informed by different locations and events, each of the works uses the combination of the original media and the intervention of the artist to examine the layers of mediation through which we experience what happens “elsewhere.”

CHRISTOPHER NOLTE FOUNDER AND CEO, TAPTAPE

Investing in emerging musicians. Chris Nolte is Founder and CEO of TapTape, a platform that lets music fans invest in their favorite artists, allowing them to share in the success of projects they support. He started TapTape during his time at MIT Sloan School of Management, originally inspired at HackingArts. He won the Creative Arts Prize at the MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition, as well as the Business Plan Competition at SXSW’s Interactive Startup Village.

Michele Norris is NPR’s first female African-American host, a Peabody Award-winning journalist, and founder of The Race Card Project. She is the keynote speaker for Babson’s annual event that celebrates and reflects upon the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his vision of justice, equality, and peace in our own community and in the world. The event also includes presentation of the Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Award and student winners of the MLK Jr. Legacy Day Creativity Contest.

IMPROVAGANZA! Fast, furious, and fun. Try the fun, unpredictable, and often hilarious art form that is improvisational comedy. Start with professional improv comedian Larry Coen’s Intro to Improv class. Then, those that want to try their new skills out in performance can join Larry for IMPROVAGANZA!, including a rehearsal on Saturday afternoon and a public performance that night. As an extra treat, the Babson troupe will be joined by special guests from the Boston improv scene.

’Tis within ourselves that we are thus or thus. Jealousy rules the motives of nearly every character in Othello, and creates a world where what people are and what they seem to be become indistinguishable. Shakespeare & Leadership features a staged reading of excerpts from the play performed by leaders from the business community alongside professional actors. The reading is followed by a panel discussion in which the participants address leadership questions and themes raised in the text. Featuring Faran Tahir as Othello.

CHASING ICE A solitary quest with global implications. This Emmy-Award winning documentary tells the story of environmental photographer James Balog, who publicized the effects of climate change by capturing the historical polar ice melt on camera. Both chilling and awe-inspiring, Chasing Ice delivers visual evidence of climate change that is more powerful than scientific and governmental papers can communicate. It also opens up discussions about technology’s role in mediating between humans and nature, and the responsibility of the audience for witnessing such a catastrophic event. A post-film discussion will be led by Jessica Langerman, the founder and principal strategist for Climate XChange*, a nonprofit dedicated to convincing Massachusetts legislators to enact a carbon-pricing plan.

THE COOKBOOK OF SECRETSThe intersection of food, art, and alchemy. Through their arts collective The Bottega, William Pettit and Candice Smith Corby share a passion for the rediscovery of the making, use, and implementation of ancient artist materials and their reintroduction into contemporary art-making. Their fascination with natural materials and how they relate to culinary ingredients have led them to develop The CookBook of Secrets, named for the Books of Secrets medieval alchemical texts, The exhibition will share pigment instructions and recipes with a Mediterranean influence.

LINDA GREGERSON A POETRY READING

Linguistic and moral order in a broken world. Linda Gregerson is the author of seven collections of poetry, including New and Selected Poems (2015); The Selvage (2012); The Woman Who Died in Her Sleep, which was a finalist for the Lenore Marshall Prize and The Poets Prize; Magnetic North, which was a finalist for the 2007 National Book Award; and Waterborne, which won the 2003 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. Her poems have appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Poetry, The Paris Review, Best American Poetry, and many other journals and anthologies.

Winning in the nonprofit world. Carole Charnow is President and CEO of the Boston Children’s Museum, one of the largest, oldest, and most influential children’s museums in the world. Under her leadership, the Museum beat out 37 museums worldwide to win the 2015 Children in Museum Award for Lifetime Achievement. Carole will talk about leveraging her 30 years of experience leading cultural nonprofits in the US and UK to create strategic partnerships and transform the Museum’s cultural and science programming.

Join Commonwealth Shakespeare Company’s resident voice teacher Paul D’Agostino for a workshop series on voice and speech. Paul will lead activities that develop a mindful connection between what we say with our voices and what we say with our bodies.
