WHAT IS LINKEDIN?

• LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site that has more than 55 million registered users, spanning more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.

• The purpose of the site is twofold:• To allow registered users to develop and maintain a

network of people they know and trust in business. The people in the list are called “Connections.” • Users can invite anyone (whether currently a site user or not) to

become a connection.

• To allow registered users to display their professional profile, endorsements, personal web sites, etc. for the purpose of reconnecting, finding new talent, finding opportunities for career advancement, etc., as desired.

Create a profile that truly represents you.• List your current, past positions & education along with you tenure there. • Add a profile picture – this helps others to recognise you.• Add a summary paragraph – this helps others to learn about you.

Ensure your connections represent your “real world” network.

• Use the LinkedIn email import feature to see all of the people you know who are already on LinkedIn. You can then select who you wish to invite to join your trusted network. You can also search for people from your past jobs or schools and invite them to reconnect.

Leverage the power of your LinkedIn network.• Look up someone’s profile before you meet them. Learn about their

background and see who you know in common.

GETTING “LINKEDIN” – FIRST STEPS

Start by creating an account on LinkedIn at http://www.linkedin.com

Add your: • First name • Last name • Email address• Create a password to get started.

Next, add your:• Employment status• Company• Job Title• Country• Postal Code

See who you already know on LinkedIn by entering in your Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail or AOL account information. Alternatively, click “Skip this step” to move on to the next screen.

A confirmation email will now be sent to the email address that you signed up with. Please click on the confirmation link to confirm your LinkedIn account.

Once you have confirmed your LinkedIn account, you are now ready to sign in with your email address and password.

After you have signed in, LinkedIn may suggest a number of people for you to connect with. You can click on the “Add Connections” button to add the names. Or, you can click on “Skip this step” button to move on to the next page.

You are almost done! LinkedIn offers an opportunity for you to invite and connect with people that you know and trust. Enter their email addresses in the box provided, separate each address with a comma.

The next step is to complete your Profile page. This can be done by clicking on the Profile tab and selecting Edit Profile.

You are now presented with your LinkedIn Profile page. Notice that your profile is only 25% completed! This is the time to complete it. You can either import an existing resume into LinkedIn, or enter your personal details individually. You are highly recommended to complete your profile to 100% , for it to be effective.

Describe how you can bring value to your clients. Add links to AVG’s Social Media web properties.

After you have completed your profile page. Now add some connections, start by inviting your friends and colleagues.

How you are protected from spam connections

• They already have your email address: your email is not displayed on LinkedIn except to those who are already connected to you.

• They have worked with or went to school with you: when inviting someone to connect you must reference companies or schools that are in both your profiles.

• Invites are always sent to you to approve or reject before the person is connected to you.

LINKEDIN RECOMMENDATIONS

Recommendations are a great way to seal relationships that you have cultivated on LinkedIn and also allow you to promote both yourself and your company. Writing recommendations for others can lead to people writing recommendations for you.
