ATEC 4346: Storytelling for New Media
DELIVERABLE 3: Original IP Trans-media Project
ASSIGNMENT: Alone, you will develop your own original Intellectual Property (story) or
adapt one not previously used in this fashion to be re-imagined into an appropriate format fornew media story-telling. The purpose is to demonstrate understanding of trans-media elements
in storytelling, and the tools used to create such new media stories/characters/narrative
spaces.
Before you start: Brainstorm a story and review the four elements of transmedia fiction. Decide
which 2-3 elements you wish to focus on and develop a gameplan/outline/mindmap, etc.Understand the SCOPE and SCALE of this project! This is not the same thing you did with your
team on D1/D2 you should focus on your talents/skills/abilities and NOT include elements you
are not able (or willing to learn) to do.
Your PROJECT should include the following elements in this order:
1) Process: Documentation of your brainstorming process (above). This should includeideas NOT used. This may or may not be on a private blog or other electronic means, but
it must NOT be published UNLESS it is a fundamental part of the project (ie the
project itself) as collaborative fiction in which case discuss it with me first. If it isonline, you must set permissions so I can see it. ([email protected])
2) Product: A new-media (transmedia, non-traditional narrative, etc.) re-imagining of anoriginal story (your own writing or variant of source material) that includes at least two
of the following areas:
-Interactivity
-Real World Elements
-Emergent Properties
-Social Networking Tools (Social Elements)
3) An analysis a 3-5 page analytical write-up of the process, purpose, and product youhave created, and why. Justify your creative decisions and explain them to the audiencein an appropriate academic tone. Cite your sources where appropriate.
FAQ:-You may use other people as actors, consultants, helpers, etc. with their permission in writing.-You may use the crowd (audience) as an interactive part of the storytelling process.-You may create something that has some part of all the elements but DO NOT create a full blown
ARG or you will very quickly regret it. (Maintain controllability/scope/scale!)-You may use real world elements but dont break any rules/laws/values, etc. (Spirit of the law!)-You will be graded not on success or page visits but on process = WHAT YOU LEARN.-You should still track everything and report the important stuff in your write-up at the end. (GoogleAnalytics or similar I want to know how many Level 1/2/3 players you had.)
