Singing Resistance: A Musical Performance with Sumangala Damodaran抗爭之歌：音樂表演

Sumangala Damodaran領銜表演

Sumangala Damodaran, along with Pritam Ghosal, Mark Aranha, Neelambari Bhattacharya and Simon Hui from the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, will perform a concert featuring songs from India's anti-colonial and immediate post-colonial resistance movement. The songs, in six Indian languages, have been archived and interpreted by Damodaran and belong to the tradition of the Indian People’s Theatre Association. The songs cover important historical events like the Second World War and the Bengal Famine and reflect impulses and influences from various Indian, world musical, and poetry traditions. The majority of these songs has been forgotten, limited in reach or exists only in the memories of people from that time who survive now. 

In addition, the programme will incorporate Hong Kong protest songs performed by Billy from ‘mininoise’, a local grassroots folk band, as we consider the universality of the song as an expression of resistance.

The concert will also feature an introduction to a new project that Damodaran is involved in, which maps a family of melodies that were sung to express lament, separation, migration, and loss across large parts of Asia, Africa, and Southern Europe from the 7th to the 14th centuries.

Sumangala Damodaran 聯同Pritam Ghosal，Mark Aranha，Neelambari Bhattacharya 以及香港創樂團的許裕成將共同呈獻音樂表演，演唱富

反殖民色彩及後殖民時期的抗爭運動的歌曲。歌曲的歌詞涵蓋六種印度

方言，出自Damodaran的收藏並由其演繹，亦是Indian People’s Theatre Association的傳統名曲。歌曲內容講述多項重大歷史事件，如第二次世界

大戰、1943年孟加拉大饑荒等，展現古往今來印度乃至全世界的傳統

音樂和詩歌所帶來的推動力與影響力。本次演出的多數歌曲已經被遺忘，

難以找尋，或僅殘存於倖存者的記憶中。

除了以上參演人士外，香港本地草根民間樂團「迷你噪音」成員Billy亦會

參與演出，並獻唱本地創作的抗爭歌曲；無論來自何方，我們都相信歌唱是

一種抗爭的力量。

是次表演亦會介紹Damodaran近期參與的音樂企劃。該企劃集合了7 至14 世紀時期亞洲、非洲及南歐一帶的音樂，表達出各種悲傷、分離、流徙以及

失落的情緒和感受。

Sumangala Damodaran is an economist and musician working at Ambedkar University, Delhi, India. She holds a PhD in Economics and, after a 17-year teaching career at Delhi University’s Lady Shri Ram College, is involved with setting up the School of Culture and Creative Expressions at Ambedkar University, Delhi, a unique interdisciplinary arts education and practice initiative. She is also a performer and composer trained in the Indian Carnatic and Hindustani classical music traditions and the Bel Canto style of Opera for voice. In 2014, Damodaran completed ‘Insurrections’, a poetry-music collaborative project between Indian and South African poets and musicians.

Pritam Ghosal started playing the sarod at the age of 14 and later received formal training from guru Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. He has worked and toured extensively with Sufi scholar and singer Madan Gopal Singh as part of his ‘Char Yaar’ group. A composer, improviser and soloist, he is at home with both classical and contemporary music. He has collaborated with flamenco, belly dance and kathak artists in Germany and is also part of the experimental Indian-Belgian trio with eminent bassist Peter Lenearts and percussionist Suchet Malhotra. Pritam recently collaborated with Damodaran on ‘Insurrections’.

Mark Aranha is a versatile Delhi-based guitarist and composer who plays an eclectic range of styles. Also a marketing professional, his passion for music led him to the Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music where he studied under several great jazz musicians, including Prasanna, Jason Lindner, Rubens de la Corte, Ofer Ganor, Ed DeGenaro, Panagiotis Andreou, Magos Herrera and Benny Greb. Aranha has over 12 years of experience, including electric guitar and steel and nylon string acoustic guitar. He co-wrote and arranged music for Ditty & Mark and The Underknowns, which has received great acclaim.

Neelambari Bhattacharya, Sumangala Damodaran’s daughter, is a high school student at the Sardar Patel school in Delhi. She has trained in Hindustani music and is presently training in Western classical vocal music at the Delhi School of Music.

Billy was a member of the Hong Kong social movement band ‘Noise Cooperative’(噪音合作社) before he organized the grassroots folk band ‘mininoise’(迷你噪音). He has worked as a social worker, in cultural studies and as a freelancer in various NGOs and universities. In 1993, he began composing songs for social movements of workers and of housing rights, and now believes that small stories from the grassroot people embody elements of local socio-political art. This belief continues to influence his Cantonese pop, rock and folk music.

Simon Hui played double bass in the Hong Kong Philharmonic for twenty years. He was also principle bass player of the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong until 2013. He has been a member of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble since 2009. He has also been active in the non-classical scene, and was a founding member of the jazz and world music influenced group Han Shan.

Written and composed in Hindustani by an anonymous artist in memory of the hundreds of people gunned down at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, Punjab in Northern India in 1919. This song was later sung in the early 1940s by Priti Sarkar, an artist of the Indian People’s Theatre Association in Bombay.

3Pachhapananthathe Oh Green Parakeet噢，綠色的小鸚鵡

Written by Ponkunnam Damodaran in the 1940s in Malayalam, Pachhapananthathe is a young girl’s love song to a green parakeet. It is an example of a new form of cultural expression that emerged in Kerala in Southern India as ‘music of the people’.

4 Jaane Waale Sipahi Se PoochoTo the departing soldier給遠征的士兵

Written and composed in Hindustani, the song was composed by Urdu poet Makhdoom Mohiuddin during the Second World War and is about the meaninglesnesss of war and violence. Makhdoon wrote this song when he came upon a group of poor, emaciated peasants conscripted into the British Army. The song receded from public memory in the 1950s, but was revived by street theatre pioneer and cultural activist Safdar Hashmi in 1984 when the attacks against the Sikh community took place after the assassination of Indira Gandhi. Safdar was assassinated a few years later.

Cantonese flamenco song written by Billy and commissioned in 2003 by Ziteng (紫藤), a local NGO dedicated to the rights of sex workers. Billy got inspiration for this song from the articles, diaries and letters of sex workers provided by Ziteng.

Adapted in the 1950s from Paul Robeson’s famous song ‘Ol’ Man River’ that contrasts the struggles and hardships of African Americans with the endless, uncaring flow of the Mississippi River.

8HeerA traditional ballad from Punjab, Northern India that sings of the famous lovers Heer and Ranjha北印度旁遮普傳統抒曲，讚頌

海拉（Heer）和蘭吉哈（Ranjha）的愛情故事

Written and composed during the Bengal Famine of 1943 that killed more than three million people during the last decade of colonial rule. It was an event that shook the conscience of the nation and was extensively represented through art, dance and music. Sheila Bhatia, who went on to become a well-known theatre personality, composed a Heer, a traditional Punjabi ballad, telling the story of a Bengali peasant girl whose home and family had been wiped out in the famine. In a large peasant rally in Lahore during the early 1940s, Swatantrata Prakash, a young artist, sang the song to 85,000 people to express solidarity with those suffering in Bengal, an event virtually forgotten today.

Written and composed in the 1950s when the post-independence Indian state had shown itself to be repressive, it is a song that tried to instill hope amid the despair that pervaded the Indian consciousness.

10 Bella Ciao游擊隊之歌

The original Italian song, ‘Bella Ciao’, was sung by anti-fascist resistance movements in Italy during the Second World War. It has since been translated into more than 20 languages, including Chinese, English, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, etc. The Mandarin version was written before the Liberation in 1949 when the People’s Republic of China was established and was used by the Communist party. Now, it is widely sung in Hong Kong protests.

MAPPING ASIA

How we define ‘Asia’ at Asia Art Archive is the question we are most frequently asked. Acknowledging both the value and limitations of the map as a tool, this project practices a mapping of Asia that does not exclusively depend on the map as artifact, but as something that lives and continues to unfold. We share with you some of the threads and (to borrow a geological term) hot spots that are currently shaping our notion of Asia. 

From Hong Kong, the Mapping Asia project traverses land and sea, connecting Guangzhou to Peru, Lesotho and Elba. We attempt to summon mythologies and track roaming tigers, and we trace intellectual discourses around art and modernism from 20th century Santiniketan, Yangon, and Boston to 21st century Kaohsiung and London. By taking a field note-like approach and interweaving artwork, essays, an email exchange, literary extracts, a film plot, exhibition reviews, music, newspaper clippings and comics, we wish to open up multiple vantage points from which to consider Asia, looking beyond inherited boundaries, histories, and political and economic systems to entanglements and connections across time, sites, and geographies. As part of Asia Art Archive’s ongoing work, Mapping Asia is one way we hope to positively destabilise the often debilitating notions of territories that we have inherited by activating less visible or dormant sites of knowledge.

ASIA ART ARCHIvE

Asia Art Archive is an independent non-profit organisation initiated in 2000 in response to the urgent need to document and make accessible the multiple recent histories of art in the region. With an international Board of Directors, an Advisory Board made up of noted curators and scholars, and research posts, AAA has collated one of the most valuable collections of material on contemporary art in the region. AAA is open to the public free of charge in Hong Kong and increasingly being made accessible from its website.

More than a static repository waiting to be discovered, AAA instigates critical thinking and dialogue for a wide range of audiences via public research, residency and educational programmes, existing not in an enclosed space, but in a space that is open and productive.

SPRING WORKSHOP

Spring Workshop is a non-profit arts space committed to an international cross-disciplinary program of artist and curatorial residencies, exhibitions, music, film and talks. Anchored in the Wong Chuk Hang industrial neighborhood of Hong Kong, it opened in its current layout in August 2012. Spring serves as a platform and laboratory for exchange between the vibrant artists and organizations of Hong Kong’s rich cultural landscape and their international counterparts who seek to engage in far-reaching dialogue.

MININOISE

‘mininoise’ 「迷 你 噪 音 」is a Hong Kong grass-roots folk band, founded in 2007. In 2008, it released the first CD Album of protest songs, ’How Wonderful Life Is’《多麼美

好》, which have been widely sung in local protest movements. ‘mininoise’

songs concern children in poverty, residents’ lives in public housing, elderly workers’ memories, sex workers’ diaries, injured workers’ and their families’ sorrows, as well as national, political tragedies. Making songs from the struggles of grassroots daily life, the band seeks to empower communities and contribute to their causes with the beauty of music.

亞 洲 藝 術 文 獻 庫 (「文 獻 庫」) 為 獨 立 運 營 的

非 牟 利 組 織，成 立 於2000年，旨 在 解 決 記 錄

和 保 存 亞 洲 當 代 藝 術 史 的 需 要。文 獻 庫 的

董 事 會 匯 聚 了 裏 球 的 菁 英 翹 楚，學 術 諮 詢

Spring工 作 坊

Spring工 作 坊 是 非 牟 利 的 藝 術 組 織，致 力

提 供 國 際 性 跨 界 別 的 藝 術 及 策 劃 活 動，

形 式 包 括 展 覽、音 樂、電 影 及 講 等。Spring工 作 坊 駐 於 黃 竹 坑 工 業 區，在2012年 8月

始 向 公 眾 開 放，旨 在 為 本 地 藝 術 家、文化 團 體

及 國 際 藝 術 團 體 提 供 交 流 平 台 及 實 驗 空 間。

迷 你 噪 音

香 港 本土 的 草 根 民 謠 樂 隊《 迷 你 噪 音》，

於2007年 成 立，2008年 出 版 了 首 張CD《多 麼

美 好 》，以 樸 實 而 富 質 感 的 民 謠 聲 音，灌 錄

了多 首 曾 在 街 頭 傳 唱，伴 隨 我 們 一 起 抗 爭 的

謠 曲，把 憤 怒 與 苦 澀 化 為 美 的 力 量。

在 他 們 的 歌 裡，有 臨 屋 區 小 孩 和 公 共 屋 居 民

的 生 活 盼 願，老 工 人 的 淡 然 回 眸，性 工 作 者

的 日 記 殘 章，對 葬 身 建 築 工 地 的 工 人 的 思 念，

與 工 人 家 屬 同 哭 的 心，社 會 異 議 者 的 羞 怯
