Ariake Water Reclamation Center

Established inside the Cleaning Center in the New Tokyo waterfront subcenter, Ariake

Water Reclamation Center has the sewage treatment area covering a part of the Sunamachi

Treatment area (including the new Tokyo waterfront subcenter and the surrounding as well

as a part of the reclaimed ground by the inner side of Chuo-Bouhatei (central breakwater).

The Center adopts advanced wastewater treatment using A2O method (anaerobic-anoxic-

oxic process) and biological filtration process, and discharges the treated water into Tokyo

Bay (Ariake-nishi Canal). A part of the treated water is further cleaned using ozone before

being used inside the Center for cleaning facilities, cooling machines, and is also used as

water for flushing toilets in buildings in the new Tokyo waterfront subcenter.

The generated sludge is pumped through pressure pipelines to Sunamachi Water

Reclamation Center for treatment.

Most of the treatment facilities are installed underground, with the above-ground space used for gymnasiums, heated pools, and sport gyms of Koto-ward and Ariake Tennis Park. These facilities are used and enjoyed by a large number of people.

The sewerage system is principally made up of 3 facilities.Sewers, which collect and carry wastewater.Pumping stations, where wastewater is pumped up so that the sewers do not get too deep.Water reclamation centers, where wastewater is treated to be clean water.Inspections, cleaning, and repairs are done daily in order to make sure each of these facilities works properly.

Sludge is dewatered and incinerated. By doing this the sludge is reduced to 1/1000 of its original volume. The ash is being effective-ly recycled for use in building materials such as cement and lightweight aggregates.

*Water reclamation centers without sludge treatment facilities send sludge to centers that have sludge treatment facilities.

★Improvement of Living Environment through Sewage Treatment

Sewage discharged from homes and factories is treated to ensure a comfort-able living environment.

★Preventing Flooding through the Removal of Rainwater

The city is protected from flooding through the speedy removal of rainfall on land surface.

★Water Quality of Public Water Bodies

Improvement in the quality of water is ensured by treating wastewater and releasing the cleaned water into rivers and the sea.

★A New RoleIt contributes to the environment by

aiding in reducing the use of natural re-sources and the saving of energy by util-izing various resources in wastewater and facilities.

The Role of TokyoSewerage SystemsThe Role of TokyoSewerage Systems

Our sewerage system plays a vital role in ensuring a safe and pleasant living environment and in the makeup of a healthy water circulation system. In addition to cleaning water that is dirtied by use in the daily lives and activities of Tokyo residents and re-turning that water to the rivers and sea, the system also speedily removes rainwater from land surface of cities.

Ground plan

Advanced WastewaterTreatment Facility(A2O method)

Because of nitrogen and phos-phorus hard to get removed by means of the wastewater treat-ment so far used, the red tides still appear in Tokyo Bay due to eutrophication. Hence, we are adopting an advanced wastewater treatment called A2O method (anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process) in order to remove larger amount of nitrogen and phosphorus.

Biological Filtration MethodThe biological filtration facility has almost the same

structure as the sand filtration facility, so that the suspen-ded solids (SS) get removed through physical filtration. Further, air is passed through the bottom of the filter to create a film of aerobic microorganisms (biofilm) on the surface of the filter. This allows the biodegradable dis-solved organics remaining in the raw water (treated waste-water using A2O method) to get adsorbed, dissolved and removed. In this way, cleaner treated water can be ob-tained.

Anaerobic tankWastewater and activated sludge are

mixed here without air supply. Due to the lack of oxygen, the microorganisms in the activated sludge discharge the phosphorus that they have stored within themselves into the water.

Anoxic tankThe water from the aerobic tank contain-

ing nitrogen combined with oxygen is fed back to the water from the anaerobic tank. The microorganisms then take in the oxy-gen combined with the nitrogen and start breathing, while the nitrogen deprived of the oxygen gets released in the form of gas.

Aerobic tankBy blowing sufficient oxygen, the or-

ganic substance gets decomposed by mi-croorganisms while nitrogen is combined with oxygen. Further, the microorgan-isms absorb more phosphorus than is re-leased from the anaerobic tank.
