A word in Arabic can be a noun, a verb or a particle.A noun is a word that indicates a meaning by itself that is not connected with the notion of time.A verb is a word that indicates a meaning by itself and affords a tense.A particle is a word that does not impart a meaning on its own.
Nouns can be divided into categories based on many considerations such as:

Definitness & Indefinitness Arabic nouns are either definite or indefinite. The definite ones refer to specific persons, animals, places, objects, ideas etc.., while the indefinite nouns are defined as nouns or names of unspecific persons, things etc..
The definite nouns have different types that need no sign to be indicated so, such as proper nouns, relatives nouns, demonstratives, idependant pronouns with the exception of the main type in which an indefinite noun can turn into a definite one by adding the two letters prefix known as (¨al¨ for definitness) “ للتعريف to the begining of the noun in (“ (الquestion and turn part of it.
The pronounciation of the definite article “ ال “ varies depending on the first consonant of the noun whether it belongs to ¨Moon-letters¨ where the “ ل “is pronounced with sokoon ال , or ¨Sun-letters¨ where the “ ل “ is not pronounced at all but the consonant after it is doubled by applying shadda to it “ ال “ .

Masculine & feminine in nouns
The grammatical gender of nouns is masculine مذكر or feminine مؤنث . There is no neutral option. Masculinity is the default grammatical gender and so no specific sign is needed to reflect that. While femininity requires specific signs that can be letters or notions.
The next slide illustrates all the details needed with regrads to the feminine noun at this stage.
The gender in verbs are based on their subjects and they agree with them (will be treated separately).Particles do not have gender.

Dualالمثنى Singular المفردPlural الجمع
Arabic has three numbers: singular, dual and plural. The dual = singular + ان . Example: جامعتــ كتابــ - انجامـعة انكتاب The plural is of 3 types: 1/ Regular masculine known as sound plural masculine = singular + ون . Example: مشغول مهندسـ - ونمشغول ونمهندس This type of plural goes with some human males only; no non-humans at all. 2/ Regular feminine or sound plural feminine = singular with ة out + ات . Example: - طالبــات طالبة مغربيــات مغربية This type goes with all humans females and most of non-humans feminine. 3/ Irregular plural = to be learned from the dictionary at the same time as its singular. It goes with most humans males, some non-humas femenine and all non humans masculine. Examples of the singular, dual and plural are illustrated on the next slide. Rules for making singular dual and plural regular masculine forms vary on the grammar case ending which depends upon the context and so the function in which this dual or plural is used in the sentence. Please refer to ¨ Case system ¨ in the next slides for details.

Case systemArabic case endings are the usual marks حركات used at the ends of the words to indicate their grammatical functions such as subject, predicate, object of the verb, object of the preposition etc..
Each case marker corresponds to one of the three cases related to the noun: nominative مرفوع , accusative as illustrated on the next مجرور and genetive منصوبslide. The marks that indicate thes cases or ، فتحة ، ضمة They can be single or doubled depending on if the . كسرةnoun is definite or indefinite. Specific letters in specific situations replace these marks to iرdicate the three cases as illustarted.
Case endings require a solid knowledge of grammar and are to be dealt with gradually ، theoretically and in practice.

الجامد Inertاإلسمالمشتق اإلسم Derivedو
Nouns are either inert or static جـامد , not derived and nothing is derived from them such as: – – شجرة بنت أجناس classified as رجل أسماء- and , محسوسة زمان – ضوء معنوية classified as وقت أجناس أسماء ; المصدرية
OR a source of derivation called مصدر verbal noun, kown as a gerund, eg.: عمل - ; فهم
OR derived from a source مصدر such as active and passive participles, nouns of place, nouns of tool etc..
Derivation is the process of creating words or lexical units from a stem ¨ root ¨ defined by 3 letters mainly or 4 known as radicals, referred to as triliteral or quadriliteral radicals.
The chart and the example follwing it in the next two slides illustrate the previous points:
Example of derivation :
الصحيح و المنقوص و الممدود و المقصور
: ملهي.e.g ى Is a noun that ends in المقصور اء / Is a noun that ends with الممدود بيضاء:e.g ا الماضي :.e.g ي Is anoun that ends with المنقوص .is a noun that does not ends with one of these الصحيح
The next slide has more exapmles.
Rules related to grammar case endings for the first three types are treated separately in grammar lessons.
