Emily Crook Youth and Family Educator UW-Extension, La Crosse County

The common misconception when someone takes on a role like “Youth and Family Educator” is that you’ll be working with kids. I’ve done this sort of job long enough to know that it’s largely families and volunteers that I’ll work with.

I used to create tons of youth events so I would get some of that rewarding nature of witnessing the creativity and abundance of energy they have. It reinforced the “Why am I doing this?” thought that came with the job.

These days, I find witnessing the growth of the volunteers and parents MUCH more rewarding. I’ve seen you make some hard decisions lately. I’ve seen you step up and lead in pure chaos. I’ve seen you push yourself to complete some things you absolutely did not want to do (ahem, Mandated Reporter Training). I’ve seen you hesitantly embrace some deep-seeded challenges, but you did them anyway, and the best part in all of this? I’ve watched you succeed.

You have no idea how much joy that brings me. So, thank you, for doing what you do and for being my reward in this educator role. And keep up the good work!

All the best,
