INTRODUCTION
The organisation study was carried out in
Travancore Titanium Products Ltd. (TTP Ltd.,) Thiruvananthapuram. This
company is one of the famous public sector companies in kerala. Public sector
enterprises are formed in an intention to promote industrial growth in our
country. Public sector enterprises are promoted by the government and they are
functioning independently or with controlled authority, with an overall control
and supervision over it by the government.
At the time of independence public sector
enterprises of the central government was confined to a very small segment ofthe economy namely railways, posts and telegraphs, port and defence
establishments. After independence the expansion of public sector became an
integral element of national economical planning. But at present the trend seems
to be for disposing of the sick public sector enterprises of private undertaking.
However, it is an undividable fact that public sector has laid a strong foundation
for industrial development in India by pumping in huge investments and
facilities in key sectors of the economy without caring much for narrow
commercial and profit centred consideration.
Public sector kerala has a long history, it can be traced back to the period of the
second world war, when the state of kerala was divided into three political units
namely Travancore, Cochin, Malabar. Among these Travancore has considered
to be the most industrial one. Earlier the policy of government of Travancore
was to encourage the establishments of Industries in the private sector and need
for the formation of public sector in and around Travancore.

IDUSTRY PROFILE
The use of Titanium dioxide is very vast and it has been produced in various
parts of the world at different levels, which includes Multinational companies as
well as small scale companies. It is estimated that worlds total installed
capacity for Titanium Dioxide production is of the order of 4.22 to 4.38 million
tones per annum. The overall average capacity utilization of Titanium industry
is 90 to 91%. The product of Titanium products mainly used for paint industry,
fabric, proper (transparency), rubber (to reduce elasticity), cosmetics, etc.
Titanium Dioxide is far more stable then any other pigment. Its perfect non
toxicity and chemical inertness make it an ideal choice as a white pigment. The
light scattering property of finely dividend Titanium Dioxide is unmatched by
any other known material. East Asia is presently the most attractive region in
the world for Titanium Dioxide.
Now paint industry has recorded highest growth during the years. So this trend
automatically affects the industry of Titanium products in India. At present
Kerala manufactures of Titanium is also contribute major part of Titanium to

COMPANY PROFILE
Travancore Titanium Products Ltd., is a Public Limited Company under the
State Public Sector, with Government of Kerala owning 80.94 percent of the
shares. Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) hold 7.91
percent and the balance held by the Public. The total man power employed at
present is around 1500.
With a view to improving efficiency, profitability, competitiveness and to
maintain market leadership. TTP has proposals to expand its capacity to 27000
tonnes per year, modernise and diversify in stages to produce both Anatase and
Rutile grades of Titanium Dioxide pigment. Modernisation and revamping
would be carried out with minimum interruption to the present production and
the new plans to this connection will be launched during the current year .
Thiruvananthapuram could find a place in the industrial map of independent
India during the early fifties itself, thanks mainly to M/s. Travancore Titanium
Products Ltd. (TTP Ltd.,) situated at Kochuveli in the outskirts of the city. The
unit was promoted by the Princely State of Travancore in the year 1946 in
collaboration with the British Titan Products Company, U.K. (now known as
Tioxide Group Ltd) with the object of producing pigment grade titanium
dioxide using the titanium rich ilmenite available as placer deposit in the beach
sands near Quilon. It is a matter of pride that the manufacture of a rare chemical
like titanium dioxide which was confined to highly industrialized nations of the
west, was taken up here in Thiruvananthapuram five decades ago by His
Highness late Shri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma Maharaja who
visualized the industrialization of his kingdom by unearthing the rich mineral
deposits. Till last decade TTP was the only unit producing this white pigment,
not only in India, but also in the whole of South East Asia.
Titanium dioxide finds use in a variety of industrial products such as paints, foot
wears, toilet soaps, ceramic products, artificial fibers, pharmaceutical
preparations, rubber products, plastics, paper, printing inks, textile printing

formulations, flooring materials, cosmetics, welding rods etc. Its extreme
whiteness, perfect non toxicity and chemical inertness make it an ideal choice as
a white pigment. The light scattering property of finely divided titanium dioxide
is unmatched by any other known material. Titanium Dioxide is available in
two crystalline forms, viz, anatase and rutile. The relatively softer Anatase is the
right material for delustering artifical fibres. At Travancore Titanium Products
Ltd., Anatase grade Titanium Dioxide is produced by the conventional sulfate
route.

PRODUCT PROFILETravancore Titanium Product Ltd, is one of the largest industry
in India that produces Titanium Dioxide. In addition to Titanium Dioxide the
company is manufacturing Potassium Titanate, low phosphorus and special
grade titanium dioxide comparatively in small quantities.
Titanium dioxide is a white pigment the properties, which are
superior to any other pigment, developed so far. Its properties like high
reflectance, high reflective index, optimum particle size distribution, , stable
depression, excellent whiteness, high tinting strength and hiding power make it
a crucial ingredient that goes in to the manufacture of nearly all products we use
in our daily life . Paint, rubber, textiles, plastic, cosmetics, paper, synthetic
fibres, ceramics, printing inks, are some of the major industries that make use of
titanium dioxide.
There are two grades of titanium dioxide
1. Routile gade
2. Anatase grade
The two grades of titanium dioxide are chemically same but their
physical properties differ from each other. The company deals with the
production of titanium dioxide, which belongs to Anatase grade. The major raw
material used for production is ilmenite. The most important commercial use of
ilmenite is the manufacture of Titanium Dioxide pigment. Ilmenite is a
compound of oxides of iron, titanium and traces of other elements. The
separation of Titanium Dioxide can be done through the sulphate route orchloride route. The Travancore Titanium Plant is based on the sulphate route.

Properties Of Titanium Dioxide;
Titanium Dioxide is of non toxic nature having chemical stability. It
processes higher refractive index and hence it is use to makes paints. It is
extremely heat resistance and this enhances the capacity of the substanceincorporate with Titanium Dioxide to with stand with the effect of the chemical
environment and the climatic conditions. It has got high pacifying power i.e.,
the power change transparency. So it is used in plastics to make it opaque. Its
uniformity of compositions enables it to mix with any material without losing
its natural properly. Hardness of the material provides good resistance to
mechanical shock.

The main product of TTP Ltd is Titanium Dioxide Pigment. The
primary objective of TTP is to produce Pigment Grade Titanium Dioxide as per
the capacity utilization target approved by the Management maintaining
optimum quality standards of both Anatase and Routile Grades. The production

Managerial Information Systems (MIS), and raw materials and packing section.
Each of these sections is headed by the Production Managers. MIS department
co-ordinates all other departments easier. The titanium Dioxide Section has two
ends, black and white end. Each ends headed by the Deputy Production
managers. The production department is directly responsible for maintainingoptimum quality standards of both Anatase & Routile grades. CPM is
responsible for achieving the objective of TTP by integrating, directing and
controlling the production of Titanium Dioxide and Sulphuric acid etc.
Functions of Production department;
To prepare detailed production plan in consultation with GM (works)
which must be consistent with companys production objective.
To prepare detailed raw material plan and ensure the incoming quality
standards their proper usage etc.
Constantly evaluating alternative source of raw materials, direct trails
of the same and to help the management to firm up the sources.
Integrating, directing and controlling of the production process of
Titanium Dioxide and Sulphuric Acid.
Receiving of raw materials and packaging of final product.
Integrating the department itself with R&D department for
identifying solutions for long-term problems.
Production Process;
The main product of TTP ltd is Titanium Dioxide. The raw
material used is ilmenite, which from IRE Chavara. Ilmenite, a mixed oxide of
Titanium, ferrous iron and ferric iron is grounded in ball mills to fine power
which is reached with sulphuric acid is specific designed digested. There are
reinforced concrete tanks lined with lead and acid resistant bricks. The highly
exothermic reaction is completed by passing steam. The porous cake obtained
as product is dissolved in dilute sulphuric acid, thus Titanium goes in to solution
as titanium oxy-sulphate. The ferric iron present is reduced to ferrous iron

completely. Using scrap iron the former industries at the succeeding stage of
precipitation of hydrated Titanium by co-precipitation.
Reduced crude liquor is closed with setting agents and sent through
large setting tanks to remove the sledge consisting mainly of unreacting ilmeniteand silica. The clear over flow from settler is concentrated in to a specified
extends and then charged in to precipitated as hydrated Titanium.
It is filtered over drum type rotary vacuum filters. Any ferric iron still
present is reduced to washable ferrous from by leaching the pulp with dilute
sulphuric acid and Aluminium powder. It is washed further and then treated
with small quantities of certain chemicals, which help to develop the
pigmentary properties. The treated pulp is dewatered to 40% solids and then in
to big kerosene filled rotary kilns. The moisture gets removed first and thensulphuric acid decomposes and the oxide of sulphur escapes out. At final stage
of heating in kilns crystalline properties get carried to pendulum type mills and
pulverized to very fine particles of average size of 0.4 microns packed 25 kg
bags and marketed.
In addition to these products the company is also producing potassium
tartarise and low phosphate of Titanium Dioxide, which funds better application
in welding and including on semi commercial.
Another main product of TTP is sulphuric acid. The production processes
of sulphuric acid are as follows:
Manufacture of Sulphuric Acid;
Sulphuric acid (British English: Sulphuric), H2SO4, is a strong
mineralacid (not an organic acid). It can form any concentration in water. The
old name for sulphuric acid is oil of vitriol. When high concentrations of SO3are added when making the acid, a solution of SO3 in H2SO4 results. This is
called fuming sulphuric acid orOleum or Nordhausen acid.
Sulphuric acid has many applications, including in many chemical
reactions and production processes. It is the most widely used chemical.
Principal uses include fertilizer manufacturing, ore processing, chemical
synthesis, wastewater processing and oil refining.

In combination with nitric acid it forms the nitronium ion, which is used
in the nitration of compounds. The process of nitration is used to manufacture a
great many explosives, including trinitrotoluene, nitro-glycerine, and guncotton.
It is also the acid used in lead-acid batteries, and so is sometimes known as
battery acid.
The hydration reaction of sulphuric acid is highly exothermic. If water is added
to concentrated sulphuric acid, it can boil. Always add the acid to the water
rather than the water to the acid. Note that part of this problem is due to the
relative densities of the two liquids. Water is less dense than sulphuric acid and
will tend float above the acid.
Because the hydration of sulphuric acid is thermodynamically favourable, sulphuric acid is an excellent dehydration agent, and is used to prepare many
dried fruits.
The affinity of sulphuric acid for water is sufficiently strong that it will
take hydrogen and oxygen molecules out of other compounds; for example,
mixing glucose (C6H12O6) and concentrated sulphuric acid will give elemental
carbon and water which is absorbed by the sulphuric acid (which becomes
slightly diluted): C6H12O6 --> 6C + 6H2O.
