Our schools started the IG program with Express Publishing invited the English teachers to a workshop presented by Steve LeverMr Lever suggested some ideas and activities to spark students’ interest in English classesHe also demonstrated how to use the Interactive Whiteboard in class Head Teacher Sumayyah Abuhamdieh teachers Hanan Tu�ahahKhloud Abu Hijleh and Salam Mansour attended the workshop which was held on 3 October 2009

Head Teacher Sumayyah Abuhamdieh teachers Inas SayedahmadHiba Zrari and Sara Masoud attended a workshop given by Peter Lucantoni from Cambridge University Press�e workshop was held on 24 October 2009 in association with Philadephia Book Gallery Characterisics of teenagers were discussed including behavior relationships and even style of clothesMrLucantoni explained that teaching teenagers is di�cult due to lack of understanding of the way teenagers’ brains work which is totally di�erent from those of adults Some language activities were presented in the workshop to tempt teenagers into learning English in a more meaningful and enjoyable mannerTeachers enjoyed these activities as they are applicable in class and can be used alongside any course book and most importantly they don’t need much time for preparation

Head Teacher Sumayyah Abuhamdieh teachers Inas Sayedahmad and Salam Mansour attended a workshop entitled Creativity in the Classroom presented by Ms Sue Magee�e workshop was held at the British Council on 14 October 2009 In this workshop teachers discussed what creativity meansboth for teachers and the learner and discussed why creativity is important in the classroomSome activities which provide practical experience of creativity were presented and teachers discussed the programme for future ELTeCs sessions

Another workshop held at the British Council entitled Available English presented by Roxanna Hughes and Philippa Baker was attended by Head Teacher Sumayyah Abuhamdieh and teacher Inas Sayedah

English Department Activities

mad�is workshop aimed at generating ideas to help teachers exploit readily available materials such as DVDsEnglish songsEnglish magazines and advertisements to provide rich learning opportunities for students both inside and outside the classroom�e workshop took place on 25 November 2009

Some students from AMS participated in the Ministry’s Creative Writing competition Marcel AlAbed from grade eight won the fourth place and Yazan Afeef from �rst secondary won the third placeBoth students won for article writing

�e Japanese Embassy in Amman arranged the Fourth Japanese Festivalan Open Day in the University of Jordan under the patronage of the Japanese Ambassador and JAICA representative in Jordan Teacher Hanan Bashimam who studies Japanese languagemanaged to bring an invitation for IG students accompanied by teacher Amal Jaber�e activities included Judo and Karate shows as well as a demonstration for �ower arrangement�ese activities were presented by volunteers from JAICA �ere were also di�erent corners for Japanese traditional clothes traditional games origami Japanese writing and others At the end of the festival Japanese language students sang in Arabic and Japanese with JAICA volunteers
