Reactions 1178 - 17 Nov 2007 Aloe vera Allergic contact dermatitis in an elderly patient: case report A 72-year-old woman developed allergic contact dermatitis during application of aloe vera leaf juice. The woman presented with a 3-month history of pruriginous erythema of her legs, followed by intense pruritus, erythema and desquamation of her eyelids. Shortly before, she had started applying self home-made aloe vera leaf juice over her legs for chronic peripheral venous insufficiency [dosage and duration of therapy to reaction onset not stated]. Patch testing revealed positive (++) reactions on day 3 to aloe jelly ’as is’ and aloe pulvis ’as is’. She also had a positive (+) reaction to nickel sulfate on day 3. The woman was strongly dissuaded from further application of aloe vera. She received hydrocortisone cream for her eyelids and methylprednisolone aceponate ointment for her legs. Her lesions gradually improved. In 2 weeks, they had totally resolved. Over an 8-month follow-up period, they did not recur. Ferreira M, et al. Allergic contact dermatitis to aloe vera.
