(NAPS)—Not only are more people mov-ing toward online banking (62 percent, according to an American BankersAssociation survey), they’re also usingthe Internet to research such big deci-sions as selecting a home loan. A surveyof homeowners by Wells Fargo foundthat nearly half visited their financial insti-tution’s website to learn more about prod-ucts and services.

A home loan is one of the mostimportant financial decisions most people

will make and the difference in a few keyvariables can have a significant effect onyour borrowing costs over the life of theloan.

Here are a few questions andanswers you may want to consider whenresearching your home financing options:

What type of loan do I need?• There are two basic categories of homeloans. A mortgage loan can be used topurchase a home or to refinance an

existing mortgage. A home equity loan orline of credit lets you access your home’sequity to fund such things as homeimprovements or large purchases, orconsolidate outstanding debts.

What will the money be used for andhow much could I borrow?• Whether you’re buying your first home, fixing up an existing home, refinancing, looking for a home equity line of credit ortrying to identify ways to manage existingdebt, researching how much you can bor-row is an important step. Credit experts, such as the National Foundation forCredit Counseling and others, suggestspending no more than 28 percent ofyour monthly pretax income on housingpayments, which include principal, inter-est, property taxes and insurance.

Should I get a fixed- or adjustable-ratemortgage?• Depending on your personal financialsituation, either choice could be an optionfor you. If you’re planning on staying inyour home for a long time, a fixed-ratemortgage may be a good choice since it

offers predictable monthly payments andguarantees that your interest rate will notincrease over the life of the loan. However, if you’re planning to refinanceor move within a few years, anadjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) might bebetter. Typically, ARM loans have lowerinitial rates and then adjust within a pre-determined range, usually annually.

(NAPS)—If you work on your own athome—or would like to— you’re notalone. According to research by theUniversity of Oregon, about 6 percentof the work-force (over 8 millionAmericans) telecommute to companyjobs from their homes on either a part-time or full-time basis—and the numberis increasing. By some estimates, a full30 percent of the workforce will betelecommuting by the year 2020.

There are many good reasonsfor this. For one thing, it saves fuel. Foranother, it saves time and money forboth employer and employee. One thing making telecommuting easi-er is cloud computing. It involves sever-al computers connected though theInternet or an Intranet. Together, theycan reach out and retrieve dataprocessed elsewhere. Now you caneven add business voice service to thecloud through Voice over InternetProtocol, or “VoIP.” Essentially, thephone system works over the Internetrather than over traditional phone lines.

That means workers can be at

home or on the road but appear to cus-tomers to be sitting in company head-quarters. One system that serves nearly 15,000small businesses, many with multiplelocations to be tied together via theInternet and their phone system, offerssuch features as: • Businesscommunica-tions that canbe provisionedquickly andgrow as yougrow • The ability tolet workersplug in and getworking nearly anywhere they have abroadband connection • Auto call attendant • Music and messages on hold • Call forwarding and follow me • Different greetings according to thetime of day and the day of week • A dashboard that keeps track of real-time status of workers

• Extension-to-extension, click-to-callfunctionality • Companywide directory • Outlook integration• Mobile command and control throughiPhone and Android devices. All that because the company,Vocalocity, specializes in bringing

remote officeworkers togeth-er for virtualcollaboration. As one cus-tomerexpressed it, “Iunpacked thebox, assembledthe phones,

plugged them in and they worked. Itwas a very simple process. With ourheadquarters being 3,000 miles awayand having to travel a lot, I needed aphone system that worked and that Icould count on having no troubles with.Vocalocity eliminated the need for anyIT support in my company.”

Another, describing how handy

the system was when an ice storm shutdown his city for a week, said, “We for-warded all phones to our home thenight before and remoted in with thecomputers. We might as well all havebeen in the office for the whole week.”

The storm had left many work-ers stranded at home and forced manybusinesses to lose a distressing weekof work, sales, profits and production.Roads became ice-skating rinks anddriveways became sledding terrains.Public transportation, the post office, schools and donation centers allclosed. Gas ran short, as did suppliesat grocery stores and city hospitals.

A poll of the people in the com-munity who had the telecommuting sys-tem in place, however, found that 92percent were at full functionality and noone could tell that they were not in theoffice.

New Cable Boxes Help Save Money And Energy(NAPS)—A growing number of consumers are getting the picture whenit comes to energy and their cable box. Surprising as it may sound, a cable box uses energy even when you’renot watching TV. In fact, nearly two-thirds of energy use occurs whenpeople are not watching TV or recording a show, costing Americans anestimated $2 billion each year. A home with two standard boxes can use more electricity than a newrefrigerator. To help, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENER-GY STAR program is partnering with pay-TV service providers to offerenergy-efficient set-top boxes to their customers. Qualified set-top boxes can power down when not in use and aredesigned to be at least 40 percent more energy efficient than othermodels. Experts say if every set-top box in the nation met ENERGYSTAR requirements, it would save about $1.8 billion a year and helpreduce greenhouse gas emissions. To learn more, visit www.energy star.gov/products.

A new kind of cable box is de signed to help save energy and money.

(NAPS)—Plants can be a beautiful way to spruce up your home and garden, butif you share your home with a dog or cat, you’ll want to choose your plants care-fully. The leaves, seeds, berries and bulbs of some common plants can be poiso-nous to pets. Many flowers, such as hya cinth, oleander and hydrangea, can cause stomach irri-tation when ingested by your cat or dog. Wisteria, lily of the valley, morning gloryand narcissus are other common plants that have parts that could be poisonoussuch as seeds, pods, roots, bulbs and flowers, and therefore should be avoidedwhen landscaping your yard. Vegetable and fruit gardens should also be treated with caution. The leaves ofrhubarb, shoots of potatoes and seeds of apples can be extremely poisonous to

dogs and cats. Instead, try plantingbeets, honeydew melon or zucchinisquash, none of which will pose a threatto your precious pets.

If you’d like to bring your gardeninside, tuberous plants are great toinclude in any fresh-cut arrangement. While some members of the tuberousfamily are completely poisonous, suchas iris and lilies, others can be safewhen handled intelligently. As long astheir bulbs are discarded, tulips, daf-fodils and buttercups are a beautiful andsafe way to bring nature indoors. In the spring, be sure not to plant azaleas, primroses or geraniums, which areentirely poisonous to dogs and cats. Consider planting impatiens, sunflowers orpetunias instead, as they are all safe and will add color and beauty to your out-door space.Floral decorations are not solely relegated to springtime, however. The winter holi-days are a popular time to celebrate with seasonal plants, so be mindful as youdecorate. Cats and dogs should stay away from holly and mistletoe—both ofwhich contain poisonous berries—and English ivy and poinsettia plants, whoseleaves, flowers and stems are toxic.
