Each team also contributes to essential functions such as meals and cabin clean up. In addition to these physical feats, each team also works on a group skit which is performed in front of the evening’s bonfire. As we approach the end of our 2011-2012 School Year at ‘Aikahi, there are many great educational activities and memorable events being planned for our students and families. Activities ranging from Yellow Ribbon Day to May Day always make for a memorable and festive year end.

A few follow-up items I would like to share with you: Our Jump Rope for Heart event was an active day to say the least! All grades participated in all forms of jump roping and really worked up a sweat! Our student’s jumped to raise over $3,255 for the American Heart Association. On March 8th, our Physical Fitness Team represented ‘Aikahi Elementary at the annual Windward District Physical Fitness Meet held at Kaiser High School. Due to inclement weather, the events were held in the gymnasium with the exception of the 35/50 meter dash. Only the first 4 individual finishers are acknowledged. Due to time constraints, results were sent to the individual schools. The 7 events were the 30/50 m. dash, the standing long jump, the bent arm hang, the curl-ups, the push-ups, the sit and reach, and the 200 m/400 m run (shortened due to the weather). Representing ‘Aikahi Elementary were: 3rd Graders: Juliana Johnson, Katie McLendon (3rd, bent arm hang), Ava Holmes (1st, push-ups), Lia Collis (1st, jump; 1st, 200 m.), Giovanni Rufino (1st, jump; 3rd 200 m.), Gus Goodell, Wyatt Li-zama (4th, sit & reach), and Ryan Graham. 4th Graders: Cascade Jackson, Jayda McFadden (2nd, jump), Kanoe Murakoshi, Melody Witten-Watthanasook, James Morris (3rd, jump), Mason Heyer (3rd, bent arm hang), Khayson Yamashita, and Kanoa Smith (4th, push-ups). 5th Graders: Lyvia Smith, Chelsea Lovell, Lauren Gould, Cheyann Yamashiro, Webster Aluli, Ashton Kaneao, Logan Laveti (1st, jump), and Tommy Kilmer (4th, bent arm hang) 6th Graders: Isobel Navarro, Malia Moritz, Maya Chan (4th, bent arm hang; 1st, curl-ups), Tamia Wright, Cannen Chiu, Matthew Watkins, and Robert Gribbons (1st, jump; 2nd 200 m.) At "press time" we were still waiting on team standings. Special thank you to Mrs. Joy and Mrs. Kim for giving up their lunch time to help to coach the team. Also a special thank you to Mrs. Piercy for sharing some stretches to help the team prepare, and to the PTSA for providing our team shirts.

As the end of the year is quickly approaching I have lots of information and updates to share with you. First off, HSA Testing begins April 9th and will continue until April 25th for our 3rd – 6th Graders. You can check class testing times on our school website. Studies show a good night’s rest and a solid breakfast help increase student test results. A hearty school breakfast may help, which are available for $1 from 7:15-7:45am each school day in our School Cafeteria. The breakfast menu is also available on our school website. I also wanted to thank everyone who came out to our Science Fair Open House this past March 29th. The variety of science fair projects was impressive and the significant amount of research each student conducted in support of their hypotheses was more than interesting. Several parents commented on how much learned! The Student Council, PTSA and I are now hosting a month-long campaign to raise money and awareness for Leukemia research through our Pennies for Patients change drive. Please consider emptying your loose change into the “little green box” that was sent home with your child or, perhaps, simply let your child take your loose change to school to deposit into their larger classroom donation box. We are offering a $50 Pizza Party to the class with the highest total donation. Save the date! The 5th and 6th Grade Team Building Night will be Friday, April 20th from 7-8:30pm. This “Minute To Win It” style event will feature 10 challenge stations set up for teams of 4 to rotate through. Teams can be pre-grouped or assigned together at the door. In order for this event to be a success I will need at least 10 5th and 6th Grade parents to help. A flyer was sent home on April 5th and is also available on our school website. My goal is to build respectful relationships outside of the school day while promoting responsibility in an after school environment. Next up on the agenda for our younger students is our Kinder Kids Tour Night. As some of you may know, Kindergarten Registration is underway. The Kindergarten teachers and I are hosting the Kinder Kids Tour Night from 5-6pm on Wednesday, April 25th and it is open to any and all potential and known incoming Kindergartners. We would like to introduce them to our school, classrooms and teachers. This night is all about them, as they navigate an “apple trail” throughout the school. We will have ice pops and a book to reward them when they finish. We have a special Yellow Ribbon Day coming up in honor of our military students on Friday, April 27th. This festive day is a treat for all students and concludes in an engaging afternoon assembly. I want to thank all the parents who have sent in the I Can Help With May Day volunteer slip. After tallying up the forms I would like to report that over 20 volunteered to assist with clean up; 25 bringing in greens and flowers; 5 forming a hospitality committee; however, only 6 volunteered for morning stage set up. If you plan on taking the morning off to come see the show, please consider coming in early to help with the stage set up, as it is an incredibly important aspect of this great event. What’s the bonus to this? You are there early and get to plant your lawn chair in a prime spot! Thank you for your consideration. We will have “seasoned” May Day people there to guide you. Looking ahead to one more thing, I wanted remind you that Teacher Appreciation Week will be the week of May 7th and will conclude with ‘Aikahi’s May Day celebration on May 11th. I will be sending home more information later this month about how your child can support this event. This being the first year I have been in the PCNC position, I want to let you know how much I appreciate your school involvement. I love planning these events, knowing you enjoy attending them. Thank you all so much!! Your questions, feedback and ideas are always welcome! You can contact me at 254-7944 x235 or [email protected]. Robyn Nagli ‘Aikahi Elementary PCNC

It was another great turn out for our March Playground Clean-up. Thank you to the following students and their families for lending a helping hand:

And a very special thank you to Girl Scout Troop 402 for giving up their Saturday morning to help us clean our playground. Due to the uncertain weather, we were unable to install the slide this month. If you would like to help with the slide installation or the bench project, please contact Christina Pascua at [email protected]

Mahalo for your support!

Yellow Ribbon Day is scheduled for Friday, April 27th. This is a moving and memorable day for our ‘Aikahi Ohana given that over 30% of our students are from military families. This special day and event is in honor of ‘Aikahi’s military students and families, thanking them for the many sacrifices they make on behalf of their active-duty military family member(s).

Military Members: If you would like to attend, please make arrangements now to ensure the day off from work, so that you can also pay tribute to your military child.

Military Families: Please send in your completed blue Yellow Ribbon Day form so that we may properly recognize your military child(ren) on Yellow Ribbon Day!

Planning for this fabulous event has been long underway, yet we always appreciate any additional help and support! Only with the help of amazing parent volunteers can we bring such enriching and fulfilling events to your child's school. One of the best ways to model your commitment to bettering your child's educational experience is to get involved! If you are interested in helping with this event or any other at ‘Aikahi Elementary, please contact Kelly Anderson at [email protected].

‘AINA In Schools is a farm to school program of the Kōkua Hawaiʻi Foundation. ʻAikahi Elementary was one of five public schools on Oʻahu to pilot the program in 2006. That year ʻAikahi Elementary Cafeteria Manager Sueanne Miyata partnered with ‘AINA IS to offer the Healthy Choices Salad Bar to ʻAikahi students, and parent Wendy Rosen, who was already tending

gardens on campus, partnered with ‘AINA IS to host the first ever ‘AINA IS Garden Party to expand the school gardens. In 2006 a couple of parents attended the first ever ‘AINA IS nutrition docent trainings to be able to offer 2nd and 6th Grade students nutrition lessons. This school year eight (8) parents and one community volunteer made time to attend trainings to deliver the monthly nutrition lessons. ‘AINA In Schools thrives at Aikahi Elementary thanks to the support of the school’s Administration, teachers, staff, PTSA, parents and community.

For those new to ‘AINA In Schools the program includes six (6) program components:

Garden–Based Learning (Grades K, 1st, 5th) reconnects students to the natural world through the joys of gardening. This school year led by parent Wendy Rosen, supported by parent volunteers. Nutrition Education (Grades 2nd, 6th) in the classroom empowers students to make healthy choices that will last a lifetime. This school year led by parent volunteer Lezlee McFadden, supported by many other parent volunteers. Healthy Food on Campus (school-wide) increases local, fresh products in school lunches and snack programs to provide healthy choices. Led by parent volunteer Lezlee McFadden and sponsored by the ‘Aikahi PTSA and many parents. Agricultural Literacy (Grades 3rd, 4th) introduces students to where their food comes from and who grows their food. New Kalo (taro) Lessons developed and piloted at ‘Aikahi Elementary by parent Wendy Rosen.

Waste Reduction (school-wide) reduces, reuses and recycles waste in gardens, schoolyards, cafeterias and classrooms. At ‘Aikahi Elementary this includes composting of schoolyard and cafeteria waste led by Garden Educator, Wendy Rosen and Cafeteria Manager Suanne Miyata, Worm lessons led by retired ‘Aikahi teacher Pauline Jacroux and classroom recycling led by 4th grade teacher Ms. Mah. Family and Community Outreach raises awareness to support ‘AINA IS at school and at home. This year ‘Aikahi Elementary partnered with ‘AINA IS and Kaiser Permanente to host the ‘Aikahi ‘Ohana Orchard celebration on campus, and ‘Aikahi Elementary and ‘AINA In Schools worked together to involve families and community volunteer groups in ‘AINA In Schools Garden Parties throughout the school year. Please consider supporting ‘AINA In Schools at Aikahi Elementary School next school year. There is something for everyone’s interest or availability. Contact parents Wendy Rosen ([email protected]) or Lezlee McFadden ([email protected]) or PCNC Robyn Nagli [email protected] to learn more about this wonderful program at Aikahi or, plan to observe a garden or nutrition lesson at the school before the end of this school year. For more general information about the ‘AINA In Schools program, please email [email protected].

FARM TO SCHOOL

"Everything is right about farm to school: healthy fresh food, enhanced economic opportunity for farmers, and education for children about where their food comes from. That's a trifecta!"

Quote from Kathleen Merrigan,

Deputy Secretary, USDA

A very special thank you and aloha from the Kokua Hawai’i Foundation to parent and Garden Educator Wendy Rosen. Wendy has been a tireless advocate and teacher in the school gardens at ʻAikahi Elementary for the last seven (7) years. We will miss your green thumb, enthusiasm, dedication, and ability to grow an amazing school gar-den program complete with composting, a garden club, fruit tree planting, and an ex-perimental Kalo garden.

Mahalo and aloha also, to parent and nutrition lesson point person Lezlee McFadden. Thank you for support-ing parent and community nutrition volunteers, communicating with teachers, and your dedication to healthy food choices for kids.

Wendy Rosen, Lezlee McFadden and ‘AINA In Schools would like to say Mahalo to this years’ group of Aikahi parent nutrition lesson, garden, and Healthy Choice volunteers named above!

Last month, the AINA IS lesson for our 2nd Graders focused on how foods rich in calci-um and protein help them to grow. They tasted a high quality calcium and protein rich snack of either Hummus or Black bean salsa with locally-grown Japanese cucumber "chips" .

In the "Facts About Fats" lesson, they practiced identifying caution foods: those contain-ing added sugars, fats, sodium, and color. Students learned how to choose between healthy fats and unhealthy fats. Everyone enjoyed an assortment of healthy dried treats.

Coming up, 2nd Grade students will further explore the concept of higher quality vs. lower quality foods. They will use what they learn to create a balanced, high quality breakfast in "Off to a Great Start!"

In "Media Blitz" our 6th Grade students learned to identify various marketing and advertising techniques used to sell food and then used those strategies to create their own colorful and creative Healthy Food Ads. Teams presented their "healthy advertisements," which included print ads, jingles, dances and skits. All of the great advertisements can be viewed in the school cafeteria at your leisure. Our 6th Grade students were also treated to some locally-grown pineapple. Coming up, 6th Grade students will gain understanding of the importance of lis-tening to their body signals for hunger and satiety and how to listening to these signals can help them make healthy food choices. Thank you to all the parent volunteers for your dedication in supporting Healthy Choice Lunches. The students depend on you for these healthy and fresh food

choices every Thursday during lunch. If any of these parent-supported 'AINA IS initiatives interest you, please email ‘Aikahi parent Wendy Rosen at [email protected] for more information on volunteering with the school gardens, or parent Lezlee McFadden at [email protected] to volunteer for the ‘AINA IS nutrition lessons and/or for Healthy Choice Lunches.

Our gardens have recovered from the hail damage and we hope to have successful crops for all classrooms. The Garden Club is busy preparing their booth for the Fun Fair. We will be selling potted plants, fresh herbs, fresh produce, Vermicast and student-made Organic Pesto Sauce! We are looking for donations of potted plants, so please check around your house for any extra plants that might help us. You can call me to set up a drop off time or simply leave the plants on the work bench near the Kindergarten gardens. Our goal for the year is to fund at least one week of the Healthy Choice Lunches for all students at ‘Aikahi during the month of May! Allyson Fairweather is our Fun Fair booth leader and she would greatly appreciate more parent volunteers to support this endeavor. Please contact her directly if you would like more in-formation and/or would be willing to work a shift in our Fun Fair booth. She can be reached at (443) 624-6400. And, please don’t forget to stop by our booth at the Fun Fair for some healthy treats!

The 4th Grade gardens are looking beautiful. The sweet potatoes will be harvested on May 1st and the Taro will harvested on May 22nd. I am looking for parent volunteers to help with the Taro harvest, which will be an all-day affair. The students will harvest in the morning and prepare the taro for cooking. They will return at the end of the day for taste testing of the three different taro varieties that were grown. Please consider joining us. Even an hour of your time will make a difference, This is a pilot program, and because of our success, Kokua Hawaii will be offering this program to the other Aina IS schools next year!

PTSA Treasury Report

In March, the PTSA continued to support Healthy Choice Lunches, Enrichment Scholarships and the 3rd quarter STAR Party. Ms.Fong and her students made us a very nice thank you poster that you can view on Facebook or on our new PTSA website. We also wrote the $2,500 donation check to the library from the We Love ‘Aikahi proceeds! Thank you for all your support. Let's finish our last two months strong!

Our annual Jump Rope for Heart event was held on March 19th to "jump into Spring". The whole school took part in a healthy, fun event which is sponsored by the American Heart Association. There were 47 students who fundraised, collecting $3,255 for the Association. The most ever raised by ‘Aikahi Elementary! Congratulations to our top 5 fundraisers: Mari Kurosawa, $345; Ava Holmes, $285, Michael Salehi, $250, Veronica Rojas, $200, Pokai McConnell, $155. Special thank you to Mrs. Fong for helping with the record keeping.

Our annual Fun Fair, which is scheduled for Saturday, May 5th from 10am-4pm, is fast approaching and parent participation is ESSENTIAL to make it possible. In fact, we still need a Bake Sale Coordinator, a Setup Coordinator, a Break-down Coordinator and a Volunteer Coordinator to ensure this fun event runs smoothly. These are fairly simple positions, but are neces-sary for a successful Fun Fair. If you are interested in volunteer-ing or would like more infor-mation, please attend our next Fun Fair meeting on April 18th at 7pm and/or contact Christina Pascua at [email protected].

Thank You Sam’s Club!

Due to the severe rain on March 9th our classrooms in the lower C Building were flooded and, as a result, the carpet for our 1st Graders was damaged and had to be discarded. As such, our 1st Graders had to sit on the hard linoleum instead of a carpet, but, thankfully, not for long! Through a connection with Community Helping Schools our PCNC was able to secure donated, brand new 20” padded carpet tiles for five (5) classrooms. These carpets were generously donated by Sams Club of Honolulu. Now each class has 11’ x 10’ rugs to nestle into during circle time.

Jump Rope for Heart Success!

During the month of April, our PTSA, PCNC and ‘Aikahi’s Student Council partnered together to support a Leukemia and Lymphoma Cancer Awareness Campaign called Pennies for Patients. Your child has already received a small donation box that you can fill at home with change throughout the month. In addition, there is a class donation box that kids can fill with change as well. Our Student Council will be collecting the change every Friday from these class boxes to tally the amounts. There will be a $50 Pizza Party for the class with the highest donation total at the end of the campaign. On April 27th please send in the small donation box clearly marked with your child’s name and room number so his/her class receives credit. 100% of the proceeds are donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Our "Aikahi's Got Talent" show was a great success! We had 11 acts in our show and they rocked the house! Our judges Ms. Stagno, Mrs. Piercy, and Ms. Kauhini had a difficult time determining the winning acts, but in the final analysis, Abigail Kung was in 3rd place with her piano recital, Zoe Campora came in 2nd singing "Beautiful", and our 1st place winner was Kindergartner Dominic Hill with his Tahitian Otea! Dominic has qualified to represent ‘Aikahi and compete in the statewide talent competition, "Brown Bags To Stardom", which will be held at the Aloha Tower stage on Friday, April 20th. If you'd like to get more information or attend the event, check out the website at www.brownbagstostardom.com.

As of today, April 6th, there are only 34 more days of school remaining in the school year. As such, I ask that all students and/or families who are moving away and/or transferring out of our school at the end of this year to please let me, Gay McGuire, know. This will allow me to balance your lunch account and pro-vide you with a refund, should the same be necessary, by the last day of school. Please email Gay McGuire at Gay_McGuire/AIKAHI/[email protected] should you have any questions or if your child(ren) will not be attending ‘Aikahi Elementary next year. Thank you for your support!

‘Aikahi PTSA Needs Your Support

The students of 'Aikahi Elementary recently thanked the ‘Aikahi PTSA for our support of the Star Reader Program by presenting us with this wonderful poster signed by ‘Aikahi students! The PTSA is humbled by the over-whelming and unexpected appreciation the students have shown us and, in turn, we thank all of ‘Aikahi’s wonderful students for their amazing support and graciousness!
