STYLE OVERVIEW: Often described as a “refined” Georgian style of architecture, domestic architecture in the Federal style came in the form of a simple box, two rooms deep with doors and windows arranged in strict symmetry. “Federal architecture was a sign of urban prosperity, reflecting the growing wealth of the new nation” (Historic New England) and geographical location of Federal style ranges from the North Eastern part of the United States to Washington, DC. The Federal style draws inspiration from architect Robert Adam (1728-1792) and his unique adaptation of Roman and Greek structures studying in the Mediterranean. While Georgian architecture was much heavier in architectural components, Federal architecture or Federal style was much more refined and delicate than it’s counterpart.

Typical elements used (list: columns, pilasters, arches, pediments, medallions plaster, etc.)
Friendship House, Washington DC
The Federal style design elements are understated. Columns and moldings are narrow and simple (Federal). Pilasters were used inlue of columns and were decorated with classical motifs (Federal Style 1790-1830). Hip roofs with simple gables and even roofs with center gables and pediments on the front façade are popular in the Federal architectural style (Federal). Balustrades were also often present. Dormers are often seen on these style of buildings. Windows are evenly spaced creating symmetrical balance (Federal). The most decorated element of a Federal style building is the front door (Federal). Semicircular Fan shaped windows are located above the door which is flanked by sidelight windows (Federal). Moldings or small front porches will decorate the front door (Federal). Tooth like dental molding is often used (Federal). Material used to build the exterior of the building depends on the buildings location. Homes in the south were often made of brick and Northeastern homes made of clapboard (Federal).

Image Description Web LinkDetail 1 This gilded mirror with acanthus leaf carvings located on each
corner were common in Federal interiors. With a movement away from the elaborate carvings and rococo curves previously found on furniture and silver. Pieces were smaller and more practical for the home and aesthetic reasons.

Detail 2 Portraits that were generally smaller in shape and size were used for the home. They often depicted portraits of predominant American people or individuals. Personal portraits were made in the side profile fashion and the larger scale portraits, like George Washington crossing the Delaware, were larger but always with a patriotic theme. This is similar to the styles of Classical Antiquity, where war heroes were often depicted in grand ways. The small rectangle and oval pocket portraits were very popular during this era.

Detail 3 The federal style urn mirror was used in diplomatic reception rooms circa 1780, and often had long elaborate lines with mahogany wood inlays and wood scroll pediment towards the top and the bottom. Gold gilt was often used as ornamentation throughout the piece as was done in a Hepplewhite fashion.

Detail 4 The quilt was introduced during this era to signify unity throughout the United States and often used in the interior of Federal style homes. Quilts during this time period often highlighted the American pride with different patches sewn together in various shapes, colors and patterns. They were also made in various sizes, some often larger then the furniture they sat on. Some were also used as wall tapestries, and each piece told a story about American history. Linen and silk were often used in the construction, as it cotton was becoming more available during this period.

Image Description Web LinkDetail 1 The Hepplewhite chair was made famous by George
Hepplewhite in the late 18th century. The design of most chairs in this still had a shield-shaped chair back, sloped arms, and gentle tapered legs. Satinwood and Walnut were often used in the making of these chairs, and were often used in the homes of wealthy families and individuals.

Detail 2 Pastel colors of pinks, blues, soft greens and yellows were favored and used throughout Federal homes. Deep sapphire and crimson were also used, but primarily in an extravagant way (dining spaces, entertaining spaces). Upholstery and drapes were generally made of silk and the damask and Waverly patterns were used throughout the rooms.

Detail 3 Mahogany wood was used primarily after the 18th century, replacing walnut as the predominant wood choice in cabinet making. Walnut veneer was used in chairs, cabinets, dressers, credenzas, tables, etc…Almost all furniture was made of mahogany and often featured several colored inlays and geometric designs imbibed in them.

Detail 4 Brass was becoming popular during this time frame, and local blacksmiths still produced many metal goods for homes during this era. Typical hardware motifs were ropes, beads, acanthus leaf and Grecian leaf. Mass machine production started to kick-off as well and many innovations were discovered during this time as well. The first mass produced screws, the latch back plate and the newly modern, built-in closet was introduced as well.

Ceiling and Floor Sketch
Traditional elements are used in the design to support the Architectural style of the building. Clean straight lines common for Federal Architecture is used throughout the design. The sofa, head boards and most chairs are geometric forms which are dominant forms in the design. The curvilinear lines found in the sofa , and meeting room chairs chest rails and lighting are subdominant forms. The pastel colors of blues, yellows and creams support the period design and are the dominant colors in the design. Dark royal blues are subdominant and add interest to the color scheme.
The Federal architectural style of the building is representative of the new path the clients will be embarking on which is reflected in the elements of the design. The building is equipped appropriate furniture, fixtures and finishes that support the needs of the clients and represent the architectural style of the building. Clients will have fully furnished apartments, a laundry area, meeting , lounge, and study areas, public bathrooms and office . Measures were taken to insure the comfort and safety of the clients by having a limited access and appropriate furniture and soothing color schemes. Two of the apartments are ADA compliant and all of them were designed to meet universal needs. Egress and building code requirements were strictly applied to insure that the environment is safe and accessible for all future occupants.
The design of the New Hope Transitional Home was successfully executed keeping the needs of clients in mind and enhancing the architectural style of the home with appropriate design elements. The design was met while staying inside of the allowable budget. The overall design will provide a supportive atmosphere for its residents to help them move on to better futures.
Justification
Over the last few weeks , while studying the concepts taught through Residential Design II, I have learned a plethora of information. I have studied the concept s of designing period homes as well as the need of transitional living facilities. I have also leaned the importance of working with a team and how it can lead to a more thorough design.
Through researching the Federal architectural style for New Hopes Transitional housing I have learned the details that go into creating appropriate designs for historical homes. Color schemes , furniture, and finishes all need to be reflective of the period to create a cohesive design. It also became very apparent to me how much I enjoy historical designs which might end up being the avenue I choose for a future career.
While research the transitional homes I have learned what kind of needs have to be met to insure the success of the residents. One of the primary needs the clients require is the feeling of safety which can be met by a variety of ways but it must be considered when designing this kind of facilities. An added benefit of reaching out to these facilities was connecting with individuals whom run the facilities and volunteering my services to any future design needs they may have in the future. Itwas a great opportunity to give back to the community.
Lastly, I’m grateful for the connection made with Candace Lawson and Ed Stangret via the team assignments. They are both wonderful, hard working individuals who made working as a team one of the best experiences I have had during my time at the Art Institute. Online classes make it hard to connect with other students so this was a great way for us to do that. I feelvery blessed to have been teamed with Candace and Ed and look forward to staying connected with them.
