For a long time I have wondered why festivals and shows seem to miss a trick when it comes to selling food to the punters – sure, everyone loves chips and a burger once in a while, and even the occasional doughnut. But with quality events such as the Mumbles Mostly Jazz and Blues Festival, Proms in the Park and so on, it would seem logical to cater to people with food and drink of equal quality.

How pleasant then to see the organisers of the now legendary Admiral Mumbles Mostly Jazz and Blues Festival taking a new approach – serving great food and drink to match the music.

For the inner you, this year’s festival takes a new turn, with a food and drink offer that moves up a few notches to cater for all gastronomes.

The festival has enlisted the expertise of two local businessmen in the form of hotelier Roger Johnson, owner of the award-winning Little Langland Hotel, and Michael Knight, chef to the stars!

I spoke to Roger regarding the bar and what we can expect to be served this year:

‘It’s a great event for drawing people into Mumbles and also a prestigious event in the Swansea tourism calendar, so for tourists and locals alike we’ve pulled the stops out. There will be a selection of champagne for the high rollers and good real ale for the connoisseurs. But most of all, the emphasis will be on quality and variety.’

So we can forget about the old idea of a festival having warm lager and vinaigrette wine! Looks as though the bar is in good hands.

But can we forget about the soggy burgers and indigestible hot dogs too? Over to Michael Knight:

‘We hope to give people what they would expect from a prestigious event such as this – in a word: quality. We can still do burgers and hotdogs, because you’ll want to be dancing as well as eating, but it will be local produce and gourmet burgers and sausages in proper bread, with a quality garnish. New this year will also be the chance for families and friends to reserve tables for the carvery on Sunday, or reserve a table for the daytime events over the weekend.’

So, looks like it’s going to be a real treat all round.

This is what festivals should aspire to be.

See you there....Tony Kluge - Editor

A big hit when he played at the 2006 Admiral Mumbles Mostly Jazz and Blues Festival, Snake Davis is well established as one of the UK’s leading saxophonists. The resident saxophonist on ‘Tonight With Jonathon Ross’, he is in demand from the biggest names on the British popular music scene as well as visiting artists from overseas, from James Brown and Smokey Robinson to Chaka Khan, from the Eurythmics to Lisa Stansfield and M-People. Dave Stewart says it all: ‘Snake is a joy to work alongside. His musical skills have no limit – in fact he’s as free as a bird.’

‘If blues, soul, and rock can be said to form a triangle, you’ll find Loomis right in the center of it,’ says Guitar Player Magazine.

It’s an apt description, as Hamilton Loomis is one of the young artists at the forefront of bringing blues into the 21st century and redefining it for a contemporary audience. The Texan sensation has been bridging the gap between generations of music-lovers both in the U.S. and around the world.

Bo Diddley told him, ‘Innovate, don’t imitate,’ and Loomis took his mentor’s advice to heart. It speaks volumes when the likes of Diddley, Johnny ‘Clyde’ Copeland, Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown and Albert Collins take you under their wings.

Known for his tasteful, powerful guitar work, Hamilton is one of the most versatile young artists on the scene. As Bo Diddley said of him: ‘You got to put some seasonin’ in what you’re doin’ – and this boy’s got the whole salt shaker.’

Swansea-born Laurence Cottle is back by

popular demand after he and his Big Band blew the town apart at the 2007 Admiral Mumbles Mostly Jazz and Blues Festival. He has played with many of the world’s great monosyllabic musicians such as Sting, Cher and Seal, and nearly monosyllabic artists such as Eno and Jaco. And, working with Michael Kamen, he has recorded for films such as ‘Lethal Weapon’ and ‘Mr Holland’s Opus’. So how would you define “musical versatility”? How’s this: playing bass on ‘Headless Cross’ with Black Sabbath and the Hanson Christmas album? The soundtrack for Britney Spears’ movie ‘Crossroads’? And if you still need persuading, how about other big names like Eric Clapton, the Bee Gees, Procul Harum, Mike Oldfield and many others who have played and recorded with Laurence?

You’ll probably never hear such a wide range of music as you will at an Amigos concert, all played with virtuosity and bucketfuls of passion. Their vast repertoire of more than 500 songs and tunes spans the whole spectrum of European and world music. The Amigos will appear with their extended line-up featuring special guest Hugh Warren on accordion.

Mornington Lockett grew up on the Isle Of Wight, where he began playing jazz, sitting in with local traditional and mainstream bands. At Dartington he studied saxophone with Bobby Wellins, classical clarinet with Lorna Lowe and the North Indian sitar with Armanath Misra. He persuaded the college authorities to allow him to take Jazz Saxophone as a first study and became the first person in the UK to gain a degree qualification on the instrument in 1983. He moved to London in 1984 to study at the Guildhall and has lived and worked in the London area ever since.

Mornington exclusively plays P. Mauriat saxophones.

Con Club: 8.30pm – 11.00pm

Based on Freddy Keppard’s Jazz Cardinals, who introduced New Orleans jazz to Chicago in the 1920s, the Newport-based Phil Wall’s Jazz Cardinals play a wide range of styles, from the washboard bands of Chicago’s South Side to the bigger bands of King Oliver and Luis Russell.

Festival Pavilion: 8.00pm – 11.00pm

Albert Lee’s impeccable country music and rock pedigree stretches back over more than 40 years. He has performed with many of the greats in country and rock, including Joe Cocker, Emmylou Harris, Eric Clapton and the Everly Brothers. As well as being a top guitarist, he is also a red hot piano player and a pretty good singer too.

Albert Lee’s Hogan’s Heroes comprise some of the best known rock’n’roll and country players in Britain.

They won a Grammy Award in 2002.

is a breakthrough rock band made up of three multi-talented musicians with a wide repertoire of originals and covers by Hendrix, the Police, the Stones and more.

Great gypsy music, including the music of Django Reinhardt and the Gypsy Kings.

The name Allegria (pronounced ah-lay-gree-yah) derives from the Spanish greeting ‘happiness to all’. This lively Newport-based band have become a main topic of conversation at every venue they have played.

Famed for their personal interpretation of gypsy music, Allegria consist of founder member Nico Pucacco, whose true passion started with flamenco guitar style and classical romance but then encompassed Django Reinhardt, lead guitarist Hywel Maggs, composer, producer and performer, whose freely improvised yet precise harmonious technique matches melody with elegance and emotion, and Dave Evans ‘The Doc’, who provides rhythm and energy on his contrabass.

Whether you are a fan of swing jazz or a lover of Latino dance, the versatility and homogenous elegance of these musicians will make their appearance at the 2009 Admiral Mumbles Mostly Jazz and Blues Festival a memorable encounter for all.

Mumbles Rugby Club: 4.15pm – 6.30pm

Supporting Allegria will be John Dignam, an exhilarating young talent from Mumbles. John has performed onstage with the great Tommy Emmanuel and has played to great acclaim to audiences throughout the UK. Since discovering the music of Tommy Emmanuel, Chet Atkins and many others he has been inspired not only to cover their songs but also to write his own.

A talented blues band featuring Duncan McPhee from Bullitt. Duncan lists his influences as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Doyle Bramhall II, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Eric Johnson, Jimi Hendrix and Matt Schofield.

Saxophonist Tommy Harris leads his talented quartet through a repertoire of jazz standards along with original compositions. They will bring the curtain down at the Con Club, a favourite Mumbles venue for many, many years.

Two of Wales’s finest rock and blues guitarists join forces for a special one-off performance!

Monday night means party night at the Admiral Mumbles Mostly Jazz and Blues Festival, and 2009 promises to be a total blinder, with two of the finest rock and blues guitarists from the Swansea area on stage together.

Brian Breeze received his first guitar for his 13th birthday and started playing gigs in South Wales in 1962. A seminal moment was when, at 14 years of age, his band supported Johnny Kidd and The Pirates at the Ritz Ballroom in Llanelli; this was when he first heard the great rhythm & blues guitarist Mick Green, who inspired the young Brian to start playing blues as well as rock.

Since then he has played in many bands in many European countries. He achieved minor chart success with The Untamed in the mid-1960s, then replaced Jim Mullen when he joined Cream lyricist Pete Brown. He has toured with Maggie Bell, Deke Leonard, Lyndsey Muir and many others. He began to write for television in the early 1980s and has since gone on to write the music for films, documentaries and many other TV programmes, while also working as a musical director and session player over recent decades.

Brian still performs live as a guitarist and vocalist, working with various different combinations of musicians, playing a mixture of jazz, blues and R&B.

With a pro career stretching back some 40 years, Ray ‘Taff’ Williams has met all the greats, from Hendrix to Freddie King, Clapton to the odd Beatle. In the 1960s he was a member of Eyes of Blue, who won the annual Melody Maker competition at the London Palladium, along with a Decca contract. ‘Stevie Winwood was one of the judges, along with Lulu and Billy J Kramer,’ Taff recalls. The stuff of legend, indeed…

Great Latin rhythms and grooves from this 10-piece percussion-based band from Cardiff with its hot brass front line and cooking rhythm section. Get up and Salsa with this great band!
