Chairman : Kazuyoshi Saida (Osaka University)Vice-Chairman : Hiroshige Inoue (JWRI, Osaka University), Kenji Oi (JFE Steel Co.)

This commission was established in 1960 and has been consistently dealing with the material phenomenasubjected welding/joining processes; such as (a)controlling of weld microstructure and defects, (b)developmentof welding consumables & materials, (c)evaluation & improvement of joint properties, (d)lifetime prediction &repairing, (e)development & evaluation of new welding/joining technologies for advanced materials, and(f)modelling/simulation & visualization of material behaviors during welding/joining. In addition, we haveorganized a number of international conferences, symposiums, forums and workshops subjected to the weldingmetallurgy, and published a series of bulletins, technical books and data files. Our final targets are to establishthe welding technology for defect-free and high-performance joint, to develop the innovative welding/joiningtechnologies for hardly-weldable material including the dissimilar material joint, and to aid the education andcomprehension of welding & joining processes through systematizing the welding/joining metallurgy.

The interfacial joining (bonding) is widely accepted as a technical term of welding process in which theparent materials are not melted as much as possible. The bonding temperature is lower than the melting pointof the parent materials and the interfacial bonding is one of environmentally benign technologies. Diffusionbonding, pressure welding, friction welding, ultrasonic bonding and brazing & soldering are contained in theinterfacial joining. The interfacial joining has a lot of merits, which the fusion welding does not have. Thesurface technologies such as surface modification, spraying, coating, plating and thin film formation are alsovery necessary for advanced manufacturing, fabrication and electronics packaging.

The interfacial joining and surface technology will continue being applied to various types of industries, because it is very significant from the viewpoint of environmental conscious materials processing.

Strategic Research Meeting onDissimilar Materials Additive Manufacturing

Chair Soshu Kirihara, JWRI, Osaka University

ActivitiesA special research committee of Dissimilar Material Additive Manufacturing wasdeveloped to obtain knowledges of joining and welding phenomena in threedimensional processing. The additive manufacturing is novel fabrication processof metal or ceramic components with functional structures. The processes allowfor innovative complex part fabrication, client customization, rapid prototyping, anddistributed manufacturing. Three-dimensional models are designed minutelyaccording to theoretical concepts in computer graphic applications, and two-dimensional cross sections are created by slicing operations automatically. Highresolution laser beams are scanned on a spread ceramic powder bed with orwithout resin binders to form solid planes of two-dimensional cross sections.Through layer stacking, ceramic precursors or components with the three-dimensional models are fabricated rapidly and exactly. Large scale structuralcomponents for aerospace and other high temperature applications can befabricated with internal cooling path networks formed without casting molds.Rapidly cooled and solidified microstructures formed by the layer stackingprocesses were discussed form our viewpoints of joining and weldingtechnologies.

Ad-hoc Research Meeting onAdvanced Analysis of Welding Phenomena

Study Group on Interfacial Phenomenain Ultrasonic Welding of Aluminum Alloy

Chair: Hiromichi T. Fujii (Tohoku University)

This workshop aims to improve understanding of the fundamental phenomenainvolved in weld formation in the ultrasonic welding of aluminum alloy. It ismade up of 11 members from academic and industrial fields. As the keywordsin this work are recrystallization around the weld interface, shear deformationof surface asperities, friction with ultrasonic vibration and atomic diffusion inhigh dislocation density, the consideration from the view point of metallurgy isthe most important to understand the weld mechanism. Therefore themembers will thrive on a clash of ideas with each other where somedistinguished metallurgists belong. Also, people in other fields will providesome advice on a novel methodology to clarify the weld mechanism duringultrasonic welding. The findings cultivated by extensive discussion in thisworkshop will be disseminated through publications in international refereedtop journals or the other conferences.
