ABSTRAK
Latar Belakang. Meskipun menonton televisi mempunyai pengaruh negatif,
namun mempunyai keuntungan, seperti media edukasi justru mendorong
minat anak untuk belajar. Masih belum jelas apakah lamanya menonton
televisi dapat berpengaruh pada prestasi akademik anak usia sekolah.
Tujuan. Untuk menilai hubungan antara lama menonton televisi dengan
prestasi akademik pada anak usia sekolah.
Metode. Penelitian ini merupakan studi cross sectional pada anak usia 6
sampai 12 tahun selama di SD Shafiyyatul Amaliyyah, Medan selama bulan
November 2009 dengan menggunakan kuesioner yang diisi oleh orangtua.
Hasil. Sebanyak 249 anak memenuhi kriteria sampel penelitian yang terdiri
dari 137 (55%) anak laki-laki dan 112 (45%) anak perempuan. Dijumpai
korelasi negatif yang lemah namun bermakna antara lama menonton televisi
dengan prestasi akademik pada anak (r = - 0.205, P = 0.001). Namun tidak
ada hubungan yang bermakna antara prestasi akademik dengan lama belajar,
lama tidur, lama bermain game, lama bermain PS, usia awal menonton televisi
dan jumlah ekstrakurikuler.
Kesimpulan. Didapatkan hubungan korelasi negatif yang lemah antara
menonton televisi dengan prestasi akademik.

ABSTRACT
Background. Even there is a negative effect of viewing television, but it is still
has an advantage such as for an educational media for promote children to
learn. However there are not definite whether the duration of viewing television
could affect school performance at school age or not.
Aim. To investigate the association of duration of viewing television could
affect school performance at school age.
Method. This was a cross sectional study of 6 to 12 years old students at
Shafiyyatul Amaliyyah primary school, Medan during November 2009, use a
questioner to fill of their parent.
Results. There were 249 students enrolled in this study, consist of 137 (55%)
boys, and 112 (45%) girls. There were a weak negative correlation between
duration of viewing television to children’s academic performance (r = -0.205, P
= 0.001). but there were no significant correlation between their academic
performance and the duration of learning, sleeping, playing on the computer
game or PlayStation and their school activities.
Conclusion. There was a weak negative correlation between duration of
viewing television to academic performance.
