Tis remarkable recruitment o oun academic sureons into the Association can be attributed to several actors. First, the AAS’s rowth reects the health and the dnamic nature o the oranization. We have taken the lead amon surical societies in developin a career-trainin proram or surer residents, ellows and new acult who are interested in p ursuin academic careers. Further,  we have established ourselves as an oranization that encouraes and activel recruits member participation on committees and in executive positions. Te success o these directives has been readil apparent in the activities o the AAS Institutional Representatives . Te Institutional Representative proram was re-introduced in 2005 b the Membership Committee, led b Chairs, Je Upperman and more recentl, Peter Nelson. Je and Peter proposed that the AAS reach out to active members who were located at academic centers around the countr. Over time, these members have served as a clearinhouse or inormation reardin AAS activities and have activel ocused on the local recruitment o oun acult. Te have encouraed oun sureons in their departments to consider the benefts o AAS membership b keepin them appraised o AAS prorams and up-comin events. In reconition o their eorts, there will be a special invitation or the Institutional Representatives at an AA S-sponsored breaka st this Feb ruar in Phoenix. In addition, we will ocus the remainder o the newsletter on providin ou with specifc inormation about this valuable proram and introducin ou to on e o our top recruiters! most recent clinica l and research eorts. Te 2007 proram includes special topics on “Surical Innov

Investiation and the IRB,” “Maintenace o Board Certifcation”, “ACS Certiin Education Centers

Excellence,” and a new clinical topics session on Minimall Invasive Surer.

Te Association or Academic Surer is pleased to announce the winners o three academic developmerants: the 2007 Student ravel grant is awarded to Baemi Pratt; the 2007 Student Research grant i

awarded to John Steinber; and the 2007 Rosln Facult grant is awarded to Eric . Kimchi, MD.

Mr. Pratt received his underraduate trainin at the Universit o Chicao and is presentl attendin

Harvard Medical School. Durin his third ear o medical school, he received the Doris Duke Clinica

Research Fellowship, which enabled him to spend two ears perormin outcomes research. Tis work

led to a frst author publication in the Annals o Surgery , in addition to presentations at the SSA, AHP

and Pancreas Club. Mr. Pratt also expects to receive a Masters Deree rom the Harvard School o Pu

Health or this work.

Mr. Steinber received his underraduate deree rom Duke Universit and is presentl a MD/PhD

candidate at the Johns Hopkins Universit who expects to receive his dual deree this sprin. In his th

 work, Mr. Steinber defned the molecular mechanisms involved in cerebellar lon-term depression. T

 work was published in Science with Mr. Pratt as co-frst author. He has also received the Dinesh Tekd

 youn Investiator Award rom the Johns Hopkins School o Medicine or his outstandin thesis resea

Dr. Kimchi is a raduate o Te Penn State Collee o Medicine who completed his surical residenc

 Wane State Universit in Detroit, MI. Durin this time he was awarded the Helen DeRo Research

Fellowship in surer and immunolo. He urthered his surical trainin at Te Universit o Chica

 where he completed a ellowship in surical oncolo. Tere, he received the Dennis and Claire Nardo

Surical Oncolo Research Fellowship, which led to a frst author publication in Cancer Research, as w

as other publications. Dr. Kimchi returned to the Penn State Collee o Medicine in Jul o 2005 as a

member o the Section o Surical Oncolo. Since his arrival he has assumed a prominent role as par

the Proram or Liver, Pancreas, and Foreut umors within the Penn State Cancer Institute. As a ou

acult investiator, he has received clinical and basic science rants or research in hepatocellular canc
