The World’s Most
Unusual Millionaire Hetty Robinson was born in 1834. When her parents died, she
was thirty years old. They left her $ 10 million ($ 185 million
in today’s dollars). She was very good at business and soon
made more money. Hetty was famous as the richest woman in the United States, but
she was also famous because she was very stingy.
Even when she was young, she was stingy. For instance, on her twenty-first birthday,
she refused to light the candles on her birthday cake because she did not want to
waste them. The next day, she cleaned the candles and returned them to the store to
get a refund.
Hetty always thought men wanted to marry her for her money. Finally, at the age of
thirty-three, she decided to get married because she did not want her relatives to get
her money. She married Edward Green, who was a millionaire. They had a son and a
daughter. Soon after, Hetty divorced him because she did not agree with him about
money matters.
Hetty was even stingy with her own child. For example, when her son hurt his knee in
an accident, Hetty did not call a doctor. She tried to take care of it herself. When her
son’s knee didn’t get better, she dressed him in old clothes and took him to a free
clinic. The doctors recognized her and asked for money. Hetty refused to pay and took
her son home. The boy did not get medical treatment, and a few years later his leg
was amputated.
Hetty was stingy with herself, too. For example, she always wore the same black
dress. As the years passed by, the color of the dress changed from black to green and
then brown. When the dress became dirty, she went to a cheap laundry and told them
to wash only the bottom where it was dirty, and she waited until it was ready. Her
undergarments were old newspapers she got from the streets. She rented a cheap
apartment with no heat in New Jersey because she did not want to pay taxes in New
York. Then she traveled on the train to her office in New York. Her office was a
space in a bank, which the bank gave to her for free. All she ate was raw onions and
cold oatmeal. She was too stingy to spend money to heat her food. Sometimes, to heat
her oatmeal, she put it on the office heater because that was free. She also ate cookies,
but regular cookies were too expensive for her, so she walked a long way to get
broken cookies, which were much cheaper. One time, she spent half the night looking
for a two-cent stamp.
When Hetty Green died in 1916, she had no friends. She left more than $ 100
million (over $ 17 billion today) to her son and daughter. Her son and daughter were
not stingy like Hetty, and spent the money freely.

Potatoes
Can you imagine life without French fires? Potatoes are very popular today.
They are fourth most important crop in the world, after wheat, rice, and corn. But in
the past, potatoes were not always popular. People in Europe started to eat them only
200 years ago!
In the 1500, the Spanish went to South America to look for gold. There, they
found people eating potatoes. The people of Peru in South America had been eating
potatoes for 7,000 years! The Spanish brought the potato back to Europe with them.
But people in Europe did not like this strange vegetable. Some people thought that if
you ate potatoes, your skin would look like the skin of a potato. Other people could
not believe that you ate the underground part of the plant, so they ate the leaves
instead. This made them sick because there is poison in the leaves. Others grew
potatoes for their flowers. At one time in France, potato flowers were one of the most
expensive flowers. Maria Antoinette, the wife of king Luis XVI, wore potato flowers
in her hair.
Around 1780, the people of Ireland started to eat potatoes. They found that
potatoes had many advantages. The potatoes grew on poor land, and it grew well in
their cold and rainy climate. It gave more food than any other plants, and it needed
little work. All they had to do was to plant the potatoes, and then they could do other
work on the farm. On a small piece of land, a farmer could glow enough potatoes to
feed his family. A person could eat 8 to 10 pounds of potatoes a day, with some milk
or cheese, and be very healthy. Soon, potatoes became the main food in Ireland. Then,
in 1845, a disease killed all the potatoes in Ireland. Two million people died of
hunger. Many Irish who did not die came to the United State at this time. Over a
million Irish came to America; one of them was the great-grandfather of John F.
Kennedy.
In other parts of Europe, people did not want change their old food habits.
Some preferred to die of hunger rather than eat potatoes. In 1774, King Frederick of
Germany wanted to stop his people from dying of hunger. He understood that
73
potatoes were a good food, so he told the people to plant and eat potatoes or else his
men would cut off their noses. The people were not happy, but they had no choice and
so started to eat potatoes. Today, people in this part of Germany eat more potatoes
than any other nationality. Each person eats about 370 pounds of potatoes every year!
Today, many countries have their own potato dishes. Germans eat potato
salad, and the United State has the baked potato. And, of course, the French
invented French fries. Now French fries are popular all over the world. The English
eat them with salt and vinegar, the French eat with salt and pepper, the Belgians eat
them with mayonnaise, and the Americans eat them with ketchup.

แบบทดสอบความสามารถดานการอานภาษาองกฤษ
Direction: Read the passages and choose the best answer.
Honeybees
The honeybee is important to Oklahoma agriculture. One-third of the food we
eat is pollinated by honeybees. Pollination is moving pollen from one plant to another
plant. This allows fruiting plants like watermelon, tomatoes, and strawberries to make
fruit.
Honeybees serve another purpose. They make honey. The bee takes nectar
from flowers, takes it back to the hive, and turns it into honey. Humans enjoy many
foods made with honey.
Bees can also be dangerous. They sting! When they feel threatened, they use
their stingers to protect themselves and their home. Usually, the sting hurts, but is not
life-threatening. Some humans are allergic to bee stings and have to be careful to keep
the proper medicines with them to counteract these
bee stings.
When you see a honeybee, leave it alone. Don’t try to hit it. Tell your parents
where you saw the bee.

When Lightning Strikes
Thunder provides a wake-up call to head indoors.
Scientists say lightning strikes the surface of Earth about 100 times each
second. Thunderstorms are most frequent during the spring and summer. During those
seasons, experts warn people to be especially aware of the dangers of lightning.
Forces of Nature
Lightning is the flash of light that occurs when electricity moves between
clouds or between a cloud and the ground. The huge spark of electricity is like the
tiny kind you get when you run a comb through your hair or scuff your feet on a
carpet— only much stronger.
A lightning bolt that crackles through the air can reach a temperature of
60,000 degrees Fahrenheit. That is about five times hotter than the sun! The
intense heat from lightning causes the surrounding air to expand, resulting in the loud
sound known as thunder. Thunder is nature's warning to head indoors. As
meteorologist Ron Holle from Tucson, Arizona, told Weekly Reader, "When thunder
roars, go indoors." A meteorologist is a scientist who studies weather. Holle also
recommends following the 30-30 rule. If you hear thunder less than 30 seconds after
you see lightning, head indoors—the storm
is only about 6 miles away. After the storm ends, wait 30 minutes before going
outside. To determine how far away lightning is, count the seconds between the flash
and the thunder. Every 10 seconds equals 2 miles.
Play It Safe
Lightning strikes the ground in the United States about 25 million times each
year! Although getting hit by lightning is unlikely, it is important to stay safe. In the
United States, about 60 people are killed each year by lightning.
To stay safe, follow the golden rule—head for cover. "There is no place outside that is
safe from lightning," Holle said firmly. "There are two safe places-inside a building or
a metal-topped vehicle."
80
6. In the paragraph header under the title of the passage, it says that thunder provides
a “wake up call”. That means thunder ___________ .
a. wake people up
b. is really loud
c. is a warning
d. follows lightning
7. The author wrote this ___________ .
a. to teach people what to do when there is a thunderstorm
b. to inform people about lightning and thunder
c. to keep people safe
d. all of the above
8. The author included the box at the end of the passage to ___________ .
a. summarize the article
b. give the reader his opinion on lightning
c. provide the reader with information on Ron Holle
d. provide trips for staying safe during lightning storm
9. The author interviewed Ron Holle for this passage because _________
a. they are good friends
b. Ron Holle is an expert
c. Ron Holle lives in Arizona
d. Ron Holle was struck by lightning
10. You might be struck by lightning if you ___________ .
a. comb your hair
b. use cell phone
c. stand under the tree
d. stay in the car
Lightning Safety Tips
Lightning expert Ron Holle shared the following tips with
Weekly Reader:
• Find shelter in a building or a metal-topped vehicle (not a convertible),
and close the windows.
• If you're caught outdoors, stay away from open spaces and avoid
standing near tall objects, such as trees.
• Avoid using electrical equipment, such as computers, TVs, and phones.
(Cell phones are safe to use.)
• Stay away from sinks and showers. Lightning can travel through water
pipes.
• Wait 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder or flash of lightning
before going outside.
81
11. How many people die from lightning in the United States every year?
a. 60
b. 30
c. 25
d. 10
12. Which of the following is not true about lightning?
a. It always comes before thunder
b. It’s the flash of light

It’s the Law
It’s the law, but which law-federal or state law? In the United States, there are
different layers of laws. At the top is federal law, which Congress makes for all
people the United States. Then each state makes laws about things in its territory. The
laws that each state makes must not go against federal laws. Countries and town also
make rules. A town may require that you have a license for your bicycle, for example.
Here are some similarities and differences in state laws.
The ages for going to school and for getting a driver’s license differ from state
to state. In California, children must go to school from age seven to age sixteen.
However, in the state of Oregon, they must go from age seven to age eighteen.
similarly, there are differences in when you get your driver’s license. In California,
you can get a regular driver’s license without driver’s education at age eighteen, and
you can get one with driver’s education at age sixteen. However, In Louisiana, you
can get a school instruction permit to drive at age fourteen!
Some countries, like Australia, France, and Germany, have laws about
wearing helmets when driving a motorcycle. However, there is no federal law in the
United States about this. Twenty states have helmet laws for all riders, and twenty-
seven states have laws covering some riders, usually those younger than eighteen.
However, states like Colorado, Illinois, and Iowa have no helmet laws. Likewise,
there is no federal law about bicycle helmets in the United States; however, states
have started to make their own laws. For example, in California, riders under the age
of eighteen must wear helmets. Whereas in Hawaii, Maine, and Georgia, the age is
sixteen, and in Massachusetts, it is thirteen!
There is no federal law about leaving children alone in cars. However, eleven
states have strict laws about this either in cars, in public places, or at home. In those
states, it is against the law to leave anyone in a car who cannot get out without help.
Sometimes, when a child is sleeping in the car and the parent doesn’t want to wake
the child up, the parent might decide to leave the child in the car and go into the store
to get something. The parent can get arrested for this. Similarly, it is against the law to
leave a child alone at home or outside a public place like restaurant. However, some
82
states, like California, Hawaii, and Massachusetts, don’t have any laws as yet about
leaving children unattended in cars.
Capital punishment (the death penalty) for serious is a subject people always
argue about. Most European countries do not have the death penalty. However, thirty-
eight states in the United States have the death penalty, including California and New
York. However, other states, like Hawaii and Alaska, don’t have the death penalty.
Some states have a number of very strange old laws. Most people have never
heard of these laws. Nobody gets arrested for breaking them, but they are still laws.
For example, in Kentucky, everybody must have a bath at least once a year. In
Indiana, you cannot travel on a bus less than four hours after you eat garlic. In
California, it is against the law to enter a restaurant on horseback.
13. What is this passage mainly about?
a. The punishment of breaking the laws.
b. The matters of federal and state laws.
c. The similarities of federal and state laws.
d. The differences between laws in each state.
14. Which of the following is not true about laws of the United States?
a. Federal laws are the supreme law of the land.
b. State laws cannot contradict the Federal laws.
c. Federal and state laws are made by Congress.
d. There are different levels of laws in the United States.
15. Which of the following is true about the law of the age for going to school?

Potato Chips
Peru's Inca Indians first grew potatoes in the Andes in about 200 B.C. Spanish
conquistadors brought potatoes to Europe, and colonists brought them to America.
Potatoes are fourth on the list of the world's food staples – after wheat, corn and rice.
Today, Americans consume about 140 pounds of potatoes per person every year while
Europeans eat twice as many.
One of our favorite ways to eat potatoes is in the form of potato chips. While
Benjamin Franklin was the US ambassador to France, he went to a banquet where
potatoes were prepared in 20 different ways. Thomas Jefferson, who succeeded
Franklin as our French ambassador, brought the recipe for thick-cut, French-fried
potatoes to America. He served French fries to guests at the White House in 1802 and
at his home, Monticello.
On August 24, 1853 at Moon Lake Lodge in Saratoga, NY. A native-
American chef, George Crum, created the first potato chips. He became angry when a
diner complained that his French fries were too thick, so he sliced the potatoes as
thinly as possible making them too thin and crisp to eat with a fork. The diner loved
them, and potato chips were born. In 1860 Chef Crum opened his own restaurant and
offered a basket of potato chips on every table.
In the 1950s, in Ireland, Joe "Spud" Murphy and Seamus Burke, produced the
world's first seasoned crisps, Cheese & Onion and Salt & Vinegar. In the United
Kingdom and Ireland crisps are what we in the United States call potato chips while
chips refer to our French fries. Ketchup flavored chips are popular in the Mid-East
and Canada. Seaweed is popular in the Asia, and Mexicans like chicken flavored
chips. Other flavors from around the world include: paprika, pickled onion, béarnaise,
85
meat pie, Chili Crab, Salmon Teriyaki, Borscht, Caesar Salad, Roasted Sausage,
Firecracker Lobster, Roast Ox, Haggis and Black Pepper, Olive, and Spaghetti.
