Celebration of Wenban 125th AnniversaryWe were honored to help celebrate Wenban Funeral Home’s 125thanniversary. In June, Civil War Reenactor Jon Austin portrayed afield doctor at the Battle of Gettysburg in the program, A Mother’sWish: Bring our Fallen Home. As Dr. Benjamin Lyford, Mr. Austindemonstrated Civil War field embalming on a “corpse” and discussedVictorian mourning practices. Historical Society members were invited to a reception to experience a Victorian wake at the DevilloHolt house in September. A tour of the Lake Forest Cemetery occurredon a bright fall day in October. The celebration of Wenban’s anniversary came to a close in November with a lecture on whatlife was like in Chicago and Lake Forest in the Gilded Age.

Traveling exhibitsThe West Side Stories exhibitmade history by travelingthroughout the community. Theexhibit continued its run at thewest Lake Forest train stationand at Lake Forest Hospital. Additionally, The Private Bankand Lake Forest Place hosted the display. To complement the

exhibit, curator Laurie Stein further explored the history of thispart of town with an informative and captivating lecture given at Lake Forest Place and also for the senior staff of the City. The exhibit closed with a final party as part of the Chamber ofCommerce After Hours program.

Local businesses continued to contact us to help them beautifyempty storefront windows. The Historical Society exhibit, A Senseof Place, had an encore showing on Western Avenue during thesummer of 2014.

New internship program withLake Forest CollegeThe Leslie T. Chapman Museum Internship was established by both the Historical Society and Lake Forest College in honor of LeslieChapman. Leslie provided immeasurable leadership and dedicatedservice to both the Historical Society, as Treasurer for 12 years, and to Lake Forest College, as the Vice President of Business Affairsand Treasurer for 22 years. Leslie was also an alumna of Lake Forest College.

The inaugural Leslie Chapman Internship took place in the spring of2015. Amber Craghead, a senior at Lake Forest College, used herstrong investigative skills to research items in the museum collec-tion related to World War I. She gave an outstanding and engagingpublic lecture about the community during this period. Amber alsowrote three Collections Cameo blog entries. One of these was aboutWWI-era items belonging to Helen Farwell Stevenson which were donated to the museum by her son John “Archie” Stevenson. The collection is composed of loose photographs, letters, newspaperclippings, and scrapbook pages circa 1918-1919 detailing Helen’sexperience as a WWI nurse in France.
