The NationalCursillo
Encounter:A True Joy

ARE YOU THE TYPE OF PERSON who brings joy
when you enter a room…or when you leave it? That
was one of the provocative questions posed by a
speaker at the 2015 National Cursillo Encounter at
Villanova University near Philadelphia in July.
Region 2, of which the Harrisburg Cursillo
movement is a part, hosted the electrifying
conference. A number of Cursillistas from our
diocese attended the encounter and served as
volunteers. It was an unforgettable experience,
sharing the love of Christ with nearly 700 of our
Cursillo brothers and sisters from across the United
States.

The encounter included an authentic ultreya
with witness and echo speakers. The experience of
engaging in small group reunions with people of
various ethnic and social backgrounds was also
truly inspiring.
A volunteer choir provided stirring music for
the liturgies celebrated throughout the weekend.
Beautiful voices harmonized to create moving
musical interludes which brought me to tears.
One of the most striking aspects of a national
Cursillo encounter is the diversity of the attendees.
A number of different language groups, including
Spanish, Portuguese, Vietnamese, and Filipino,
were represented. The fiesta, which proved to be
the grand finale for the event, featured lively and
dynamic performances which ranged from an
energetic Puerto Rican dance to a hilarious parody
of the movie “Sister Act.”

Some attendees remarked that this was one of
the best national Cursillo Encounters that they had
ever attended—a tribute to the hard work and
dedication of the various committees from Region 2
who helped make it happen.

promise—you will attend a national Cursillo
encounter someday. You will not be disappointed!

School ofLeaders Is
Going on theRoadBy Betty Berry
MANY CURSILLISTAS ATTEND the School of Leaders
on the second Saturday of every month at the
Cardinal Keeler Center in Harrisburg. Our new
Director of School of Leaders is Mary Ridder and
she would like to meet you. We plan to take the
School of Leaders on the road to make it more
accessible to cursillistas throughout the diocese.

You may now volunteer to sponsor a School of
Leaders at your parish one Saturday during the
next year. Doctrinal Rollos will once again be based
on “The Three Ages of the Interior Life”—Volume
II. Method Rollos will be based on the Leaders
Manual. The new curriculum will begin in
September.
If you always wanted to participate, but felt that
it was too far to travel, this opportunity is for you.
Just contact Mary Ridder and let her know what
month you would be available to host a School of
Leaders at your parish.
Also, we encourage you to invite your pastor to
present the Doctrinal Rollo and a cursillista from
your parish to present the Method Rollo; however,
if your parish chooses not to present the Rollos, we
will gladly provide the speakers.
Our Rollos are video recorded and can be viewed
on YouTube via our School of Leaders Web site at
schoolofleadersharrisburg.org. The purpose is not
to make you a celebrity, although that could
happen, but to reach and evangelize as many
people as possible by providing these talks via the
Web. When you answer the questions associated
with the video, you will get credit for attending
School of Leaders even if you cannot attend in
person.

help us grow spiritually through the Doctrinal
Rollos and to help us grow in our knowledge of the
Cursillo movement through the Method Rollos. The
Leaders Manual that we will be studying starting in
September explains the Cursillo movement and why
it is so important to attend School of Leaders if you
want to work a weekend or to serve your Cursillo
community.
Scripture tells us that we are to share our gifts
and talents with one another and that we are all
one body. Won't you share your gifts and talents
with your brothers and sisters in the Cursillo
movement?

Highlightsfrom the

A NEW DAY ◊ A U T U M N 2 0 1 510
DIOCESAN-WIDE ATTENDEES EXPERIENCED the
enthusiastic Grand Ultreya on October 10 at the
Cardinal Keeler Center. The Spanish singers and
guitar group provided lively music.
Spiritual Advisor and Homilist Father William
Weary suggested that we may not only remember
the symbol of the rooster, which signifies the
announcing of the Good News of the Gospel, but
that we may look to the geese that we can see
migrating for inspiration. The lead goose provides
uplift for the ones behind, who in turn honk to
encourage all. In a sense they are saying, “Ultreya!
Onward!” The leaders rotate so the body as a whole
can go much farther than one can go alone. By the
Cursillo tripod principles of piety, study and action,
we fortify our spiritual and temporal lives. We
make the world a place in which Christ will be
welcomed.

The first Witness Speaker was Joe Marrazzo.
“The uncomplicated methods and format of Cursillo
made me realize the importance of my faith and
that change was needed,” he said. When he asked
God, “What do you want me to do?” he happened
upon a small object and picked it up. It was a medal
of Saint Joseph on one side and Saint Dismus, the
“Good Thief,” on the other. Shortly afterward a
friend took him to an information session on the
Prison Christian Growth Group, and he realized
that this could be his mission. Joe says, “When
someone has lost everything, they have to know
that God is still there and loves them.”
The Witness Speaker from the Spanish
Community was Hipolita Serrano, from the
Allentown Diocese. “We have many challenges in
our lives,” she said, “but God always finds a way to
bring back his peace and joy.” She spoke of some
overwhelming situations that she has faced, telling
us the strength to handle them came only from the
Holy Spirit who dwells within us. When others close
to her experienced similar problems, she was
inspired to guide them and give them support and
comfort. In instructing participants of Rite of
Christian Initiation of Adults, she often tells them
to have courage, “Let Jesus lift you up!”
Bill Benning echoed these thoughts by saying
that going to church is just the beginning of our

encounter with Christ. Roseann Guerrini reminded
us that in our challenges,
God is teaching and
inspiring us. Miriam Ortega
emphasized that God will
change your plans often,
but He also gives us the
strength we need.

GOOD-BYE JACKIE; HELLO PHIL! As we say good-bye
to Jackie DeMesme-Gray at the end of her term as
our Cursillo Region 2 Coordinator, we welcome Phil
Rodney from the Diocese of Scranton, who was
installed in October as the new Coordinator.
We will fondly remember Jackie as she passes
the torch to Phil for his three year term. Jackie
leaves us with these words: “Let me take this
moment to thank you, and your respective
Movements, for your ongoing love, commitment
and most of all friendship these past few years. You
have enriched my spiritual journey immensely and
prayerfully, together, we have deepened our
Regional dialogue, strengthened our respective
Diocesan Movements and had some fun in the Lord
in the process. Thank you! Much love, Jackie.”
Ultreya! We thank you for your service Jackie,
and we wish you many blessings as you continue to
