Consecutive Readings for weekdays to be used in Masses of the third and fourth class which do not have proper readings.

INTRODUCTORY

The Consecutive Readings in general

1. This list of Consecutive Readings, for use in Masses of the 3rd and 4th class not having proper lessons, contains:

a) One series of Gospel readings;

b) A series of readings from the other books of the New Testament;

c) A series of readings from the books of the Old Testament.

There is also appended a series of six readings for use in Masses of the Dead and a series of three readings for votive Masses of the Sacred Heart. ln both cases the readings are taken from the Gospel and other books of sacred Scripture.

2. The purpose of these Consecutive Readings is to provide a series of readings for weekdays over a period of two years. This is achieved by using, during the first year, the Gospel readings along with the readings from other books of the New Testament; during the second year, the same Gospel texts are read, but with readings taken from the books of the Old Testament.

3. The first reading, in both series, is taken during Advent from the Prophet Isaiah and during Paschal time, from the Epistles of St. Paul.

4. During the time after the Epiphany until the beginning of Lent, a nineweek series of readings is provided. Following the 23rd Sunday after Pentecost, a sufficient number of pericopes is provided so that it will not be necessary to revert to texts which in the post-Epiphany series remained unread.

5. In general, the passages selected follow the order of books and chapters. At the same time, however, the specific character of each season is preserved, especially that of Advent, the Nativity and Easter.

6. The Gospel reading forms the basis of the Series. The other readings have not been selected with a view to maintaining an identity of theme. However, in some way they do conform to the themes of the major seasons.

7. Since the purpose of the entire Series is catechetical (cf. Constitution, a. 35, 1), the texts have been selected with the benefit of the faithful in

mind. ln accordance with the wishes of Catechists, a certain brevity has been maintained. Consequently, along with texts of the usual length, there are some shorter ones, just as in our present liturgical books. When, therefore, a particular text in the Series must be omitted, because of an occurring feast with proper lessons, it may conveniently be combined with another shorter text.

8. For the convenience of Pastors, a title, indicating the content, has been assigned to each text.

9. This series of readings is recommended for use not only at Mass, but also in sacred celebrations of the word where it will be of great value. Moreover, it should prove helpful for lay groups promoting the reading of sacred scripture, as also for private use and for scripture reading in the home.

II - The Consecutive Readings from the Gospels

10. During the season of Advent, attention is focussed upon the Precursor, while during the time of the Nativity, emphasis is placed upon the mystery of the Father and Son. The gospel according to St. Mark is appropriately read in the time after the Epiphany, so that, after the Birth, the life of Christ may be portrayed according to the Apostolic preaching. No texts have been assigned for Lent or Easter week. In accordance with long-standing custom, during paschal time, the discourses of Christ are read as recorded in the Gospel according to John.

During the post-pentecostal season until Advent, the discourses of Christ as recorded by Luke and Matthew are read, interspersed, however, with accounts of the works of Christ.

Ill - The Consecutive Readings from Other N. T. Books

11. The Epistles of St. John the Apostle are fittingly assigned to the time of the Nativity. Following this and until Lent, the Epistles of St. Paul to the Romans and the Galatians are read.

After Low Sunday, two readings are supplied. The first is taken from the first Epistle of St. Peter and the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians. The second is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Colossians and the Epistle to the Hebrews. These readings fit in well with the Gospel readings from St. John on the discourses of Christ.

After Pentecost, the readings are taken successively from the Acts of the Apostles, the Epistles of St. Paul (following 9th Sunday after Pentecost), the Epistle of St. James, the second Epistle of St. Peter, the Epistle of St. Jude and the first and second Epistles to Timothy. Finally, from the 23rd Sunday, the readings are from the Book of the Apocalypse, indicating that the liturgical year closes with the looking forward to the coming of the Lord.

IV The Consecutive Readings from the O.T. Books

During Advent, according to venerable tradition, the readings in both series are from the Prophet Isaiah.

During the season of the Nativity, the readings are appropriately taken from the sapiential Books.

After the Epiphany there follows a week's reading on the origins of mankind. Then there follows the narratives of Abraham and the Patriarchs, taken from the Heptateuch, more or less corresponding to the Epistles to the Romans and Galatians.·

After Pentecost there are read the books of Joshua, Judges, Samuel and Kings (in conjunction with the books of Paralipomenon).

The historical parts of the prophetical books are here read in conjunction with the historical books themselves.

Finally, following the I 6th Sunday after Pentecost the books of the Prophets are read.

RULES FOR USE OF CONSECUTIVE READINGS ACCORDING TO CONDITIONS SET FORTH IN THE

DECREE OF THE "CONSILIUM"

1. The series of texts to be used is the one attached to the decree of the "Consilium" and contained in this Bulletin.

2. The proposed readings may be used in ferial Masses or Masses of Saints of the 3rd and 4th class which do not have proper lessons.

3. During the first year the series of Gospel readings is used in conjunction with the series of readings from other books of the N. T. During the second year the same Gospel texts are read but along with the series of readings from the books of the 0. T.

4. The readings assigned for Masses of the Dead may be used even in requiem Masses of the 1st and 2nd class, with the exception of Masses on the feast of All Souls .

5. Each Ordinary may authorize or not, as he sees fit, the use of this privilege; he may fix limits to and establish practical norms for this experiment in his Diocese.

6. The duration of this experiment extends until such time as provision is otherwise made.

7. The use of this series of texts along with any version of the Bible approved for liturgical use will demand some previous preparation. In some cases it will be necessary to supply the subject of the opening sentence.

It should be noted that the traditional and approved introductory formulas to the readings are as follows:
