Foreword A Dream, the nighttime mental affinity of people, it is a subconscious behavior, or inner desire reflection, that

reproduces the daily things, desires, or forgotten memories of someone, which can all be born again through “a

dream”. A Pillow, the bed that nourishes dreams, a daily object, it can be seen, touched, comfortably leaned upon

by heads and become a base for dreams. It is ordinary, but with a metaphysical thought.

Therefore, in “Pillow Project”, we see that artists have linked pillows with a tiger that safely protects babies so they

can grow up, in folklore; linked the feel that an imaginary pillow can have with the texture of human skin; linked

the fear due to not being able to control dreams with sharp pushpins; and linked fermented mushrooms from the

drooling with interesting stories….. The illusion, wonder and imagination of pillows are turned into art through

dozens of craft masters, artists, designers and the creative alumni of TNUA. The “Dreaming Base” is presented and

also inspires people to have another thought with an ordinary pillow.

“Pillow Project” is a “Bei-Yi-Form” brand series activity of TNUA. Through the hard efforts of everyone in the Bei-Yi-

Form art team, the activity was held with resounding success, and once again succeeded in making arts practical

and lively. ”Pillow book” is the total collated record of this series of activities, it presents the wonderful works of

the participating artists and several articles introducing anecdotal pillow stories, which are very interesting to

read. This illustrated exhibition book looks at the pillow’s “growth experience” from production stories, faces the

pillow’s “family sources” from history and living literary points of view, extends and presents pillow’s “future

potential” from creative association, and leads readers to comprehensively understand the various appearances

and history of pillows, and trigger the aesthetic imagination of life!

Here I would like to thank the wonderful and hard effort intention of the team members, “People who work hard

reap a fruitful harvest”, and congratulate on Bei-Yi-Form art team with a perfect ending of Pillow Project.

TheCurator's Views

Yen Shui-Long, the pioneer of the early ‘Living Art Movement’ in Taiwan, once said that, to attain aesthetic experi-

ences of fine art, we must start from enhancing the level of living culture. In other words, the creation of aesthetic

life experiences comes from ameliorated landscapes, living environments and daily products. Through gradual

cultivation of aesthetic perceptions, one could attain a personality of elegance and simplicity.

Taipei National University of the Arts has embarked on the brand management of our art works since last year.

The development of the TNUA’s own brand, ‘Bei-Yi-Form’, serves as an important platform for promoting aesthetic

living art, and incorporating more artists into creative design of living art works. ‘Bei-Yi-Form’ is a brand and a

platform, for faculties and students of the TNUA, as well as for domestic and international crafters and artists, to

engage in research and development of living art works. Through ‘Bei-Yi-Form’, we are providing a new channel

for embracing art in daily life, creating artistic life experiences and realizing the ideal that ‘life is art; art comes

from life.’

The ‘Pillow Project’ series launch the brand of ‘Bei-Yi-Form’. We choose the pillow, a common living product that

everyone uses daily, as the theme to re-interpret our life experiences and stories through creativity. To reflect the

brand concept of ‘Bei-Yi-Form’, the Pillow Project develops three lines, the ‘Pillow Art Exhibition’, ‘Prototypes of

Creative Pillow Products,’ and the publication of the ‘Pillow Book.’ The Pillow Art Exhibition invites twenty-nine

crafters and artists to create thirty-one provocative pillow art works based on their life experiences. Each pillow

tells a unique story.

In addition, we also invite eleven crafters and artists to participate in the development of twelve prototypes of

creative pillow products. Art works are not merely meant for collectors, but also have their functions in everyday

life. These series of products are meant for take-home art works. Furthermore, authors from diversified fields, such

as literature, aesthetics and history, are invited to contribute to an unprecedented ‘Pillow Book’. Including the

record of the entire creation process.

Facing contemporary life of rapidity and virtuosity, the ‘Pillow Project’ embodies a reflection on and an alternative

reaction to the nature of life and art creation. Here we present the first fruit of the ‘Bei-Yi-Form’ team, the begin-

ning of a whole new concept. We sincerely appreciate your encouragement and suggestions that will help us in

opening more possibilities and improving product quality.

A pillow is the bracket for a dream

A pillow is a stage for insomnia

A pillow is a shoulder, chest, and abdomen for lovers

A pillow is a container that hinges the mind

A pillow is a map of tears and saliva

A pillow is a soft and hard new technology

A pillow is the time difference tranquilizer

A pillow is a gentle weapon

Whether you are using stone, grass, porcelain, ice, a book or memory as a pillow, they will all gently hold up your

fragile and complex head and neck so your mind can temporarily settle to rest. From birth to death, the daily inti-

mate interaction records almost one-third of the time pulses in life. While sleeping, the cheeks sink into it, and

dreams live in it; while having insomnia, one will roll around on it, and lots of uninvited guest minds get lost in it.

A pillow is a simple object of life, ordinary and private, original but also scientific. When does mankind find out

the thickness that you put in between while bending back, which is just to fill up the empty body and uneasy

soul?

In the ancient Chinese story "Chen-Chung-Chi”, Lu Sheng slept on the Celadon pillow, which has holes at both

ends, and entered a vivid dream that made him experience a splendid life. Without the magical pillow, ordinary

people like us can also have dreams of something that lingers in our minds. The complicated thoughts are woven

into the package, dismantled, destructed and reincarnated in the daytime. Will you be able to recognize the sub-

conscious desire and inspiration between the ups and downs of the pillow?

This time, we will use a pillow to invite scholars, writers, artists, and designers to engage in conversation, mono-

logues, and imagination, and respectively enter the pillow area from different fields. From psychological to physi-

cal, from art to science, and from practical to legend to see how many stories this object of daily life can evolve,

and through these exhibitions and activities, give new creativity and potential to pillows.
