Dear Friends of Cartoons,

The magical world of cartoons that merges art, knowledge and intelligence in sharp drawings appeared once again. Unique pieces of art that read the world with irony came together within the 46th World Gallery of Cartoons Skopje 2015 organized by OSTEN - a recognizable brand in the area of art, emancipated thought and liberated creation since 1945. The tradition of OSTEN for following and encouraging the creation and protection of art on paper is registered once again this year via this extraordinary worldwide summit of cartoonists.

We truly appreciate the cartoonists who submit their cartoons to the 46th World Gallery of Cartoons Skopje 2015 and let this strong tradition move forward much stronger. Despite of the differences in the styles and mediums, the cartoonists who attended the competition expressed their observations, concerns, worries, critics and predictions via the universal language of cartoons. These pieces of art, which prioritized the topics such as the wars in the world, unfair distribution of resources, Charlie Hebdo, awareness of environment, power of the politics and sexuality, will leave their marks to the history of cartoons.

s an international jury member, I can tell that we all had difficulties to award the prizes to the diverse and qualified cartoons. All cartoonists who enter the selection deserve the appreciation, particularly Mehmet Kahraman, Pavel Constantin and Mikhail Zlatkovsky who are the winners of the First Awards, other 10 highest ranked cartoonists who are rewarded with the Special Award and all 120 cartoonists from the First Selection who are presented in the catalog.

All cartoonists who sent their works to the 46th World Gallery of Cartoons Skopje 2015 contributed to the philosophy of life which challenge the problems of the world and encourage peace, freedom and smile over the world. Thank you all and congratulations again Glad to get know you all!

I thank to OSTEN for this successful organization on behalf of the jury and all the cartoonists. Besides that, as an academician and cartoon researcher I am grateful for the honor of taking part within the international jury and holding one of the precious titles of all my academic life.

A WORD FROM THE ORGANIZER

In the jubilee year when OSTEN celebrates 70 years since its establishment (1 January 1945) in the 46th edition of its WORLD GALLERY OF CARTOONS Skopje 2015, we appear again before the world public to convey the messages from the cartoonists coming from all over the world.

The World Gallery of Cartoons is the oldest activity of OSTEN art on paper (the first World Gallery of Cartoons was organized in 1969). Consistent with our commitment to promoting art on paper, again this year one of the basic criteria to participate in the World Gallery of Cartoons was to apply with original, hand-drawn cartoons, satirical drawings, and comics. We are pleased that cartoonists from all over the world welcome this commitment of ours and recognize our endeavors to encourage genuine artistic values in the creation of cartoons. That is, after all, also confirmed by the tradition-ally great number of participants in our event: this year 206 cartoonists with 680 original works from 50 countries all over the world have applied!

The figures speak for themselves in context of the interest shown to participate in the competition; on the other hand, the issue of the qual-ity of the works sent was entrusted to real professionals in the field of cartoons: the first selection was made by prominent cartoonists from Bulgaria, Alla and Chavdar Georgievi, while members of the international jury deciding on the prizes consisted of: Bernd Pohlenz (Germany), Murat Erdoan (Turkey), Stane Jagodi (Slovenia), Midhad Ajanovi Ajan (Sweden), and Mice Jankulovski (Macedonia). Their shared assess-ment is that this years edition of World Gallery of Cartoons received cartoons, satirical drawings, and comics of exceptional quality, both with regard to the very idea and conveying the message, and to the artistic expression which, by the way, made their work even more difficult.

The choice made by the selectors and the international jury is before you, and so we can conclude the successful outcome of yet another edition of the World Gallery of Cartoons. We, as organizers, can only be pleased, with the entire world to share the messages sent by the cartoonists through their works: alertness and critical assessment of social developments, freedom, humaneness, tolerance, solidarity as fundamental civilization assets, and, certainly, humor, as a funny way in dealing with serious things in life because even Charlie Chaplin had said: A day without laughter is a day wasted.

Until the next edition of the World Gallery of Cartoons, we wish you not to have even one day of your life wasted.
