RP 是利用逐層印刷/成形的方式,將所需成形的物件堆疊起來。 •印表機透過讀取檔案中的橫截面訊息,用特殊材料將這些截面逐層地列印出來,並將各層截面堆疊起來,從而製造出一個實際物件。

使用熱塑性塑膠線,經由一能控制XY方向移動之擠出口,將線材加溫至高於熔點溫度之狀態使之成為熔融材料,再於較冷之底層上附著畫出斷面圖形,此熔融材料可瞬間自然冷卻固化,並堆疊成形。
